Matt Thomas predictions

I'll just say this. I can't wait to watch you guys eat crow in two years when Matt is All-Big 12 first team. He'll get there. Just be patient.

I'd love to see it happen but if bet good money on this not happening.

I'd love it if he could become an 8 PPG, 40% overall shooter.

CW has told the story that, at the GSU game, scouts listed off guys on ISU that might get a look...

-Niang looked like a "maybe but probably Europe
-BDJ looked "definitely Europe"
-we might keep an eye on Thomas the next two years

Thomas had his rating for a reason. He's got the body and the talent. Let's hope he puts it together.

He must be killing it in practice for Fred and the team to stick with him like this.

You barely even see the net move in most of those.
One complaint with the video. Why does he bring the ball down before shooting? He can't do that during a game or he'll be blocked. If these are the shots he makes in practice that Fred talks about I'm not surprised it doesn't transition into games.

Are you saying he doesn't have the tools to make the NBA? Before the Georgia State game, a scout told Chris Williams that Matt had a shot at the NBA. He's a 6'4 guard with a nice jumper and he's fairly quick. He's obviously not even close to being NBA ready right now. He has the physical tools to give himself a chance, though.

A scout did not tell Williams that. I'd love to see a link. I recall him saying that scouts told him maybe Niang.

I hate these threads because everybody wants Matt to succeed. However there is so much dumb stuff either way that it's hard to leave it alone.

Some love to rip on Thomas, unjustly. Some think he is going to be a NBA level player, unjustly. None of this nonsense needs to happen and it's pathetic to see fans trash a Cyclone like this and then others reach to insane/stupid levels to defense Thomas. But mostly, the ****-tards ripping on him constantly need to get a life.

Pretty much nothing else to see here.

Look....we have ANOTHER thread on Thomas. If you don't want us to tell you you're girlfriend is ugly...stop asking what folks think of her.

I like the kid, but I'm putting my Sheron Dorsey-Walker seal of disapproval that he won't ever be a major factor on our teams. I think we will always have someone better at his position that is more consistant and not a liability on defense (and yes he is)

Poster boi of the obsessive Thomas hater club right here. Can be found in every single Thomas thread. Never misses a single one.

I hope your life improves!

My expectations are so low at this point, that anything positive out of him is icing on the cake. Really the only thing I hope for during the 5 minutes a game that he plays, is that he doesn't make any mistakes. I can live with 2-3 shots even if they're all misses, just keep up on D.

Yeah, considering Matt and Abdel didn't play in that game. I think I remember that quote being about Monte.
I heard it on KXNO one night I believe. I don't remember which week it was so I don't have a link right now. Sigmapolis also remembers hearing that. I'll find it real quick.

That shows you have low expectations for him. Nader shoots a lower three point percentage, but I don't see you complaining about Abdel.

He's shooting under 30% from 3. Why wouldn't I have low expectations? Just playing the odds.

And Nader has proven he can create his own offense. When the 3-ball isn't falling, he takes it to the rim and finishes.

Acknowledging that Thomas is 8th in minutes played for a reason isn't "bashing". It's just acknowledging the current state of his performance. He could go on a tear starting Wednesday, I would love that. But that hypothetical doesn't have any bearing on how he has played thus far.

Because Matt get's limited playing time, he needs more looks to get through this. His form and practice habits are too good for him to continue have a lower percentage from the outside. It's entirely within the realm of possibility to miss 7 or 8 in a row even with a quarter flip. Matt I think will eventually even out into a 40% three point shooter by the time he graduates.

I'll probably get ridiculed for this but whatever. If Dorsey-Walker was the 8th man on this team with the same numbers and skill set as Thomas, would people be supporting him as much as they do Thomas and saying that he's just in a slump and lacks confidence? Or is there a certain characteristic about Thomas that is blinding people from his actual abilities?
People did support sdw even though he was even more in consistant and more lacking of confidence....I never got it.

His offensive rating per 100 possessions is five points better than Nader. Nader also shoots a lower percent on threes, Nader turns the ball over more, and Nader assists less. If we're going to hate on Matt so often, why not talk about Nader as well? Why is Matt the whipping boy?

I ***** about Nader to my TV way way more than Matt fwiw.

I stand corrected. I remembered the Monte part correctly but I didn't remember the Matt Thomas thing.
I'm not saying he's going to be a future NBA player but he has the physical tools to do so, and certainly has the potential to be a really good college player. He's not far from where Naz was as a sophomore and right now his numbers aren't too far from Nader's. Matt needs to shoot AT LEAST 35% on threes. If he can do that, he'll be able to score double digits night in and night out.

BryceC and CycloneSpiker, I found the clip of Williams talking about Georgia State. 30:20 mark of the podcast from January 22nd. http://cyclonefanatic.com/upl/downloads/audio/54c1a296abde76549b24f.mp3

I knew it. Thanks!

To summarize...

-BDJ = Europe
-Niang = "one of the best players in European history"
-Thomas = "there's still a chance to keep an eye on [him]"

"Didn't dig too deep" ... after the game

"Might want to keep an eye on your PG." Yay Monte. Stay until you're a senior.

The size/tools/talent is there. The recruiting rankings and the comments from an NBA scout were there for a reason. He just hasn't pulled it together, despite the fact he's obviously (away from a game in a more sterile setting) an awesome shooter.

Maybe he'll put it together, but maybe not. I'd certainly like it if he did. His skill-set, wielded to its potential, screams Hoiball fun'n'gun and shooter. Can't have too many of those. I'd love to see him, Naz, and Cooke all nailing 40%+ from three next years and making mothers cry while doing it.

I think some of the frustration comes from...
(1) his ranking/expectations out of high school... he's our highest recruit so far, based on his high school rating, except for Royce, right, and maybe Burton?
(2) Fred has stuck with him through some struggles, more so than maybe any other player (never gave, for instance, SDW the same benefit of the doubt)
(3) there's flashes... moments where the offensive potential and the shooter in him comes out... but it's gone before you can fully realize it
