Lipsey Shoutout

He may end up being but you are being disingenuous if you think you can already tell.

I can tell Hunter is a short combo guard rather than a typical pure point guard. (Actually if he was going to come up with an excuse for going to Texas, playing off the ball more and scoring more might have made more sense)

I don’t watch Hunter and think of Monte, Halliburton, Tinsley.

Short combo guard can be the best player in college basketball some years, it’s not a knock. Derrick Rose was a combo guard only a little taller than Hunter.

They aren’t the exact type of player.

One scorer might be coming in two wee certsaimnly hope he doesn;t go score;ess the rest of the season.

This is true

Oh ok. My bad. I thought you talking about Lipsey. Yeah, I don't know about Hunter. I haven't really watched him this year to see what he looks like. Just from looking at his stats it appears Texas is letting him be a score first player. Not really many assists. They are really different players. In terms of just pure PG skills, you may be right that Lipsey will be a better PG.

Edit: Just watched some of his highlights from this year. It does appear he has worked on his shot and his form looks pretty good.

This. He has that calm floor general confidence that a PG should have. As a true freshman. Love it.

Monte is the comparison if we have to make one.

He’s pretty clearly more physically developed and athletic than Monte was, but Monte was probably the most fundamentally sound freshman we’re ever going to see in terms of mistake free basketball making those around him better.

I’ve always thought Hunter’s comp is Marcus Smart. Marcus is/was a great player but he’s not the ultra prototype point guard the way he thinks/plays like Halliburton or Monte. They are bulldogs.

He is taking better shots so his shooting percentage will go up, but there is no way a SG can shoots over 55%. I predict it will end up around 42%

If he keeps taking about 10 shots per game like he is now, and they play 27 more games, he'd have to shoot 40% overall the rest of the way to shoot 42%.

Hunter is a very good player and appears to have gotten a lot better scoring the ball. I think the odds of him shooting 40% overall the rest of the season is extremely low.

Now whether he's playing as a distributor or a what we would consider to be a true PG, I agree that isn't the case. But I also assume he's operating in Texas' offense the way the coaches want him to. I don't think the way he's playing is going to help him make the NBA, but if he's getting the payday at Texas we all assume he is that may not be a huge deal.

Not a lot of 6' point guards that average 1.8 assists/game make it in the NBA very long. I doubt he can play off ball in that league either

I've always been extremely skeptical of him playing in the NBA at all. I just don't think his size and his game are suited to it. It's one of the reasons I actually have no problem with him cashing in at UT, because that's going to be his best opportunity to make a lot of money. I just wish he'd be honest about it.

His assist number will go up as the season progress. He has good enough PG skills to average 4+ assists per game. However, as his assist number goes up, so as his turnovers.

Agreed. Having a negative assist to turnover ratio (.9) doesn't bode well for him

This thread is supposed to be a shout out to Lipsey. While I understand there will inevitably be comparisons to Hunter this discussion has wandered so far away from Lipsey it almost needs to be titled "What do you think of Hunter?"

New here huh? I'm surprised the movie Deer Hunter hasn't been mixed in.

I blame Prohm for this.

One thing that stood out to me last night watching Tamin was how well he switches gears on his drives. How many times did Wigginton and Hunter just put their head down and barrel full speed to the rim? Which usually ended in a charge, turnover, or out of control shot. Tamin remains controlled and uses speed changes to lose his defender and get clean looks. He reminds me of a polished WR running a stutter/go or sluggo route
I think the fact that Tamin was a multi sport athlete is a benefit to what he’s being asked to do this year. Changing gears and letting plays and opportunities develop are important on the gridiron.

I wonder if he is a better shooter than we think. He will be first team all big 12 before he leaves here.
He is good but not sure if he is first team all conference good. It is refreshing to see a steady floor general.
