Let's talk about reuben sandwiches

Anyone ever made their own 'kraut? My science class in middle school tried, but it was a total fail IIRC.
Yes, and it was awful. Back to Frank's for me. And

Whoever said Belgian Village in Moline was right. They have an excellent reuben.

If you can't recall it must have been a failure. My grandma would make it during every summer and it would take at least a couple weeks for the smell to go away or so I am told.

In Ames, you can get decent Reuben's at West St Deli, Dublin Bay and West Town Pub. In DM I'd probably pick Palmers.

On the contrary, Janny....if God didn't want cabbage fermented, he wouldn't have put the necessary organisms right there together. You don't have to add anything to the cabbage to ferment it, the yeast/bacteria right in the head already will do it...just some salt to keep the nasties away...I'm going to have to head to the basement to make sure my home made stuff isn't offended by your mean words.

I'm hurt...do you only read my posts when I make fun of your boots?

Even though I don't believe thy are actually on the menu. Granite City in WDM still makes a turkey reuben (very well I might add) Get it with Slaw as well to add a little sweetness. So good.
In college every once in a while the cafeteria would have build your own reubens. None of that weak 2 slices of corned beef getting between my marble rye. I had to eat mine with a fork.
I was put in charge of radio spots for the history of Ackley sauerkraut days several years ago and one of the spots was on the history of kraut. IIRC, some folks planted a cabbage patch under some apple trees and left the apples that had fallen off. The fermenting apples mixed with the cabbage and they loved the taste. Something like that anyway.

I like a good Reuben and tend to order them at different places (mainly for lunch) to compare. Some of the best I've found in Des Moines:

Palmers Deli
House of Bricks (yeah, I know, who knew?)
The Royal Mile.

When I'm in a pinch, I don't have any problem with the Reubens at Arby's.

There are a lot of people talking about a turkey Reuben. No such thing. A Reuben like sandwich with turkey is a Rachel. Rachels are great, but they are a different sandwich from a Reuben.

One of my favorite eateries in WI has rueben rolls, corned beef, kraut, swiss cheese in a wonton wrapper, deep fried and served with extra hot 1000 dipping. Good stuff there!

As others have said, I love ruebens, but am afraid to order them, because usually they are really bad.

I'm ashamed to say it but I change out the rye for white bread.

Rye bread is the best bread there is. This is like eating a veggie "burger".

Vandereuben at Belgian Village is the best I've had. They do put both ham and corned beef on it. It's not a big thick sandwich but instead it is thin but on the biggest pieces of bread you'll ever see. I liken them to flattened basketballs (but a tad bit tastier, of course).

Obviously not in Iowa, but Zingerman's in Ann Arbor makes the best reuben in the country. They also charge $15 for them but well worth it.
