Keeping TJ

It's okay, sport. Sometimes people just need to be reminded that Iowa State basketball existed and thrived long before Hoiberg.

I am aware of that. I was referring to recruiting rankings. I know Brackins isn't the best bball player at ISU. I hope you don't think I'm that dumb.

I think Otz will stay and be supportive. Otz has a real chance to stay and improve his name. If he helps Prohm a lot and ISU stays successful then he will likely be the one that takes over for Prohm if he leaves in 3-4 years. If he doesn't want to wait that long and bolts after a couple of years, he can get a job at a pretty solid school, so at least we had him and he helped us get a few good recruits. The last thing Otz wants to do is make himself look like a selfish headcase when he wants to become a head coach down the road.

Otz extended a lot of offers to the 2016 class so I think it's critical we keep him as long there isn't bad between him and Prohm. He needs to stay.

He's here if prohm will have him for next year because there is nowhere else to go. My concern is that he just bolts after this season before any recruiting headway is made so we are ground zero for talent.

Fizer? And if his house is in Ankeny, sounds like he wanted to be closer to Des Moines. Kind of kills the conspiracy theories Fred already killed.

Have you seen the players he's been able to bring to Murray State? Talent is talent, whether it's in the Ohio Valley Conference or the Big 12, and Prohm and his staff have gotten it.

Do I need to draw a demographic map for you? Recruiting to Ames, Iowa is always going to be difficult. Always.

I'd hate to have an entirely new staff try to figure that out for themselves.

Actually, Fizer was rated higher. He was a McD AA.

link? If there were the equivalent of Rivals/247 back then I don't doubt that Fizer would have been higher but we'll never know because I don't believe that Rivals put out rankings like that back then.

Prohm's sophomore point guard of last year is projected to be drafted midway through the first round. Something that MM will be lucky to attain and that's sad. However most of the talent in Prohm's former Ohio Valley Conference doesn't have to be as talented as Cyclone players.

Last year Murray State didn't play a single Top 25 ranked team all season, but they did beat Drake by 9 points. Murray State was 16-0 in their conference but had to settle for the NIT when they didn't win their conference tournament.

I think that rule needs to be changed for the smaller conferences. I don't think there were any teams in the NCAA tournament with a losing record this season but some years there has been more than one yet teams that are a lot more talented do not make the NCAA tournament.

The NCAA tournament is not about the top 68 of the 351 teams. I think the NCAA needs to make another division for any conference that is only allowed one team in the NCAA because those teams can't compete with the bigger schools.

This isn't rocket science guys... if Prohm wants him on his staff and if TJ wants to be part of his staff then it's a no brainer you retain TJ but if either side has issues with this relationship chances are it will not happen. When was the last time you heard any team's fan base talk in such detail all the time about their assistants like we do? You don't because assistant coaches are a dime a dozen and jump around all the time, to think that TJ is a make or break hire to retain is nuts. Would we all love to see him stay? Probably yes but there is no point in it if there is not a mutual desire for him and Prohm to work together. Pretty sure Prohm didn't get this job without having a good idea of what his staff will look like when he interviewed for the job over the weekend much like probably anyone that interviewed including TJ himself.

Agree. There are some good reasons to have TJ on the staff but it all comes down to how he and Prohm hit it off and what TJ wants in the near future. I'm hoping they hit it off and TJ will be happy here at least the next few years making real good money as a top assistant. I wonder if Allison is working for ISU?

@TravisHines21: FWIW, Steve Prohm and T.J. Otzelberger are previously familiar with one another, I'm told.

Not a lot of pros over the years but the last few decades a number of coaches have brought in a lot of real good talent to ISU. We're not going to do much against the blue bloods but I think we've done pretty well against everybody else.

In the future we will be a warm weather state with all this global warming going on. We might even have beaches.
It will be a slam dunk to recruit.

IMO, shouldn't be done. Reasons why:

1. Just don't see TJ sticking around more than a year or two. His deal is high school recruiting, we just issued on a ton of 2017 and later offers, and IMO he'll leave before they ever have a chance to sign. The benefit of having him on the staff will be gone before it has a chance to be realized.

2. You don't want a guy you just interviewed against on your staff. Just my opinion, but internal politics is a potential and avoidable consequence.

We need to turn the keys over to Prohm now. Can't bring in a new coach with conditions on assistants IMHO. Would love to see TJ remain on staff for SO many reasons, but it's now up to Prohm to see if there is a spot for TJ.

Regardless TJ will flourish as I think he's a class act...

what the hell is the love fest for TJ

He's been an important part of the Cyclone family for almost a decade? We've kinda grown to like the man? He's responsible for some GREAT Cyclone players? We like the guy? He's honorable? His wife was one of the most successful Cyclone women? We take care of our own?

I dunno.

My only concern about keeping Otz if this is just a 1 year deal, is that if he were to pull a Matt A, and steal a bunch of our recruits on his way out. I hope Otz would be willing to stay on longer term.

its best he goes I think, I like tj a lot, but he is a one year deal here now and everyone including people he is recruiting against know it, plus...can you Blake him if he isn't grinding as hard for prohm as he would have for Fred or himself? next year he will be hired away...none of the guys that are here now are going to leave if tj leaves

best if prohm gets his own staff, now maybe he wants tj, but if he does t you can't blame him

Seriously OP? Seriously? Those reasons are reasons to keep him. We want someone who can recruit HS talent to Ames. He's a proven and good recruiter. It's a good thing for someone to want to hire him away in a few years, that means he's doing something right. He's an assistant, they will come and go no matter who you hire.

I'm with you on all of those things. I think TJ is the kind of guy you WANT on your staff for all of those reasons. He's your immediate connection to the fan base. It would be different if the last coach was fired due to having a bad team, but in this situation i think you keep a guy like TJ around if you can as the continuity thing isn't bad when you inherit a good team like this.
