Keep the coaches

Bogus points: We lost to UNI and NDS. They get lower tier talent and they BEAT us. They took it to us and anyone who watched those games knows they were the better coached teams without question.

I don't expect to see a great Cyclone team, either. That's nowhere near my expectation.
I simply want to see a team that can win 6-8 games every year. That should be a minimal standard, but is apparently much too high for Cyclone football. That's very disappointing.

Im here as well. I would think the vast majority would take a bowl game every year. If we went 6-6 most years with some years + or - a win or two, most people here would be happy.

Im not necessarily in the fire Rhoads camp, but after 6 years, I would have expected something a little better than what we have now.

We are keeping it civil. How much time do we as fans have to give Coach Rhoads, honestly? I get that he needs time to establish stuff, but it has been six years! I think Pollard needs to come to grips with the fact that Coach Rhoads probably is NOT going to get things done in Ames...

Keep it civil fellas.

There were posts I deleted and edited. It wasn't civil between posters.

Honestly, I think we lucked out in basketball. We were going nowhere until McD got magically hired away and allowed Hoiberg to come in. Hoiberg was literally a once-in-a-lifetime type of hire in terms of immediate impact, ability, and connection with the university and fans. KSU has that in football with Snyder, but the similarities are interesting. Both Snyder and Hoiberg are high-character people who had a unique recruiting strategy focusing on immediate impact players. KSU benefited from the strong kansas juco football system while Hoiberg benefited from getting under-recruited transfer players.

I keep reading these reasons/excuses for why we can't put together a decent recruiting class because of our location and conference ... How is it that Nebraska accomplished this only 3 hours away?

They have a ton of tradition and money. Multiple national titles and they have one major university in that state.

The difference is Rhoads had had support and facilities like no coach at ISU had ever even dreamed of. Hoiberg's taken that support and excelled. Rhoads had taken that support and taken a huge messy dump with it.

Yeah those first two years where Iowa State was going to Mountain West/Conference USA/MAC after being kicked out of the BCS sure did a lot for recruiting.

And of course our facilities are now superior to ****** places like Oklahoma.

Just a pinch of tradition perhaps . . .

Btw lets not get crazy on how great our facilities. If you have seen Alabama, Oregon, Texas, Neberaska and some of the other big schools. You would realize we are still way behind. Especially with our current horrible stadium. The bowling it in will help but its still a crappy stadium compared to a lot of others. Our fans are what brings it to life.

Ah, so the Florida and Texas recruits go to a cold boring Nebraska town for the winning "tradition" that they weren't even alive to experience. Makes sense.

It's not the only factor but it plays a role. For example, playing for the "vaunted blackshirts" can appeal to the recruits. Also as KnowNothing pointed out they are the only major school in the state which definitely helps.

Our facilities are better than NDSU and UNI. We shouldn't have been dominated by these teams.

The new Football facility is what, 2-3 years old?

Did you think we would build it, and all of sudden our players would run 4.4 40's and we'd start dominating?

The facility is a GREAT tool that we haven't had before, and I think it is starting to pay off in the last two recruiting classes. Look at the best players on the team:

Bibbs - recruited 2 years ago
Lazard - last year
Montgomery - last year
Tribune - 2 years ago
Cotton Moya - 2 years ago
Campos - 2 years ago
Wesley - last year
Mutcherson - 3 years ago
Burton - 3 years ago
Taylor - Last year

The guys that are making the biggest impact on the team are guys that Rhoads and staff brought in the last couple years AFTER the facilities were upgraded. You can't expect the facilities to pay dividends for Iowa State the second they are completed. That's not realistic IMO.

And after the GoR was signed ensuring that Iowa State was staying in a BCS conference for the time being

My kids, who are college and HS aged, and who are from Texas, know of Nebraska's storied FB tradition, even though they weren't alive for the glory years. That's what strong tradition will do for ya, tho. It'll carry the history along, even through periods of drought.

I know I know. I'm not even trying to be sarcastic, im honestly just frustrated and trying to figure it out.

Rhoads is here next year because of the buyout. Up until today, I really thought he deserved to be in Ames next year even if the buyout was not an issue. After today, I feel if it would be fiscally responsible it would be smart of Pollard to let CPR go at the end of the season.

What makes anyone think a new coach is going to change the results. Every saturday i come on here and its fire the coach. How about we stick with the coach and see what the future holds. If we suck for two more years oh well. We have sucked for 120 years give or take 3 decent seasons. . Whats two more. Its one of the hardest places in college football to recruit. We have some decent offensive weapons that are young. We have a proven offensive coordinator that is new. If we made the move we would have a huge payout and could not afford a good new coach anyway. We might want to replace some defensive coaches. I get that. But enough of the fire CPR stuff. Give it a rest.

Under that mindset...lets keep McDermott happy so he doesn't leave and "see what happens." I personally don't believe the idea that there isn't anybody better to get if we don't retain the coaches. Rhoads is in year 6...SIX. There has not been improvement . Giving him another year and doing the same thing and expecting a different result is madness. I like Coach Rhoads. He seems like a nice guy. But this business is ultimately judged on wins and loses. And he just hasn't met a good enough standard to retain his job. I'm sorry but the fans of ISU deserve better for a change and keeping the status quo doesn't seem to provide that hope.

Yes today was a huge disappointment but why dont you guys answer an honest question, do you guys really expect a Cyclone team with the gauntlet schedule they have year in and year out to win 6-8 games every year?

Yes. It isn't too much to ask. The new teams to the conference have figured it out. There is no reason ISU cannot got 3-0 in nonconference and then pick up 3 conference wins. There are winnable games on the schedule. Hell this game was the first one all season that was over after the first qtr.
