Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

Here is a link to the uniforms. The way I see the uniform, it's pretty similar to what we saw yesterday. The I State logo puts us on a par with other major programs with a logo that can last. It's strong and works well on TV. I'm betting a lot to time and thought went into it's creation. Pollard knows what he is doing. If he didn't, there wouldn't have been a throwback used yesterday. Give the guy some credit here.

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

Just change the color of the facemask.

I LOVE the white facemask - on ANY color helmet, except gold. The gray facemask on our throwback helmets looks SWEET, as do USC's and Alabama's.

Red facemasks look cheesy, IMO, sort of like Louisville or Stanford. But that's just my personal tastes.

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

Agreed. The red facemasks look cheesy. I think the white helmets are fine, though I did like the look of the gold ones yesterday. White or gray facemask with a white helmet. Done. I'm much more concerned with putting a respectable logo on the side of the helmet.

If the logo is done well, the white helmet will really make the cardinal and gold stand out.

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

OKAY, so I'm thinking maybe an email should be sent to JP telling him if he really wanted to have the majority of fans be pleased with our uniforms then we should take a poll to see if people like the throwbacks or 2008's better. By the sounds of it it seems like a lot of non-isu acquaintances have been giving lots of props to what we saw yesterday. When was the last time you heard someone make a compliment about our uniforms? I think the only thing that may needs change is the helmet. Maybe even stick CY on there just because there has been a large outcry of fans wanting CY back next year. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing just the ISU logo. We need something basic. What do you think?

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

The best logo I've seen so far was the footprint on back of side of the Hawkeye's pants after yesterday's game...THAT's the kind of ID I want for Mean Gene's Cyclones!

This is not big time branding... This is a painful amateur attempt and looks like it was put together in a word processing program.

(I too am a part of a brand identity firm...)

My branding firm can beat up your branding firm!

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

Here's my take on the logo/uniform/brand issue...every time you mess with the logo you confuse the brand. Take John Deere, for example. In 170-some years the company has only had about 7 different logos ... the last three of which have been basically variations of the same basic leaping deer design. Colors have never changed. As a result, the Deere trademark is one of the most recognizable in the world. And EVERYBODY knows John Deere green and yellow. Does Deere change its trademark every time a new CEO comes on board? Nope. It's not about the board of directors, CEO or the company's individual divisions ... it's about the company as a whole. Just as it should be with ISU. Why is it that every time a new football coach comes along he feels compelled to change the uniforms, logo, or whatever? Pollard seems like a bright guy, so why doesn't he do the right thing and hire a good design firm that can put together a timeless look with long-term legs that becomes the ISU "look and feel" for the next 25 years? And forget the idea of approval by committee... when it comes to things as subjective as this, you're NEVER going to get consensus. Leave the decision up to the pros who know what's good and what isn't.

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

Uniforms have the dime a dozen look to them. They are not unique at all. ISU has a great fashion design program. Were they consulted? I cannot believe that something creative and unique did not come from there. I had students in my high school fashion class design some uniforms. SOME of them were much better in my mind than these. I wish I had sent them in for consideration. I like the white elements, many elite and premier programs have white helmets with a truly unique design. The stylized cyclones from earlier years could be the start. The "pheonix" design maybe a little too stylized. I had to ask "What is that" but still a great place to start. I hope we do not settle for the ordinary if we do not plan to be ordinary. No words should be necessary, just the logo.

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

White helmets will never work with the Gold pants. Ever. We are Cardinal and Gold. Thats it. Sure, the White helmet looks fine by its self, but when you throw the whole uniform together, it just doesn't mix at all.

We are Iowa State, not Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma State, Wyoming, Utah State or South Carolina etc. The helmets have to be Cardinal or Gold. Period. That is our school colors, so stick with it. Its really not as hard as the Athletic Department thinks it is.

I thought the throwbacks looked awesome though! I would bet the home uniforms from 1977 were great, if not better than the aways we wore yesterday.

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

Ya know what, lets just let JP decide this one. He is pretty much batting 1.000 right now, so I am going to defer to him. I like the I-State logo, it is different and classic looking.

uniforms

Those were the best looking uniforms I have seen in 25+ years. Can't we just all email pollard and see if we can go oldschool next year. Even bring out the cardinal version for home games. I mean they look classic, they look good, they have tradition from a very good squad. What is the problem?

Where is the huge cy outcry...a petition doesn't mean a huge outcry. I for one am glad to be done with the current confusing combo CARTOON and think the less we see cy the better the marketing for the "CYCLONES." Way to confusing for the national football media and fans. Cy can stay as the mascot but that doesn't mean we need to market him.

well, when Mac got here we hired a firm to help us and look what they came up with...A CARTOON that most people outside of ISU have no idea what it even is or means and with an Iowa State on it so busy and small you can't even read it unless it is right in front of you or know what it says...it looks so NBA...aka raptors.

Re: uniforms

I think I prefer those uni's to the ones they plan to roll out next year...
Definintly like the helmets more

Re: Iowa State Logo / Uniforms / Helmets

For anyone to think with a multi million dollar budget and the future of ISU football on the line, that Pollard DID NOT hire the best designing firm to plan the uniforms and logo is absurd! Do any of you honestly think he's so stupid as to do a logo by himself on a word processor? If I recall, he hired a top consulting firm to hire Gene Chizik, a top design firm for the building projects. But when it comes to the branding decision for decades to come for Iowa State University, he decided to get his crayons out and do it himself? I don't buy that thinking. There are tens of thousands of dollars of apparel sales on the line, televison image and a logo that will last. Anyone who knows how Jamie Pollard operates knows better than to think he did this on his own.

The helmet and the entire uniform looked sweet.....Iowa fans thought so too. These should have been our uniforms for the last 30 years.

Agreed! Just review the posts on this thread and you'll see people are going 10 different directions on this one. It's probably best JP made the decision. Otherwise it might be in commitee for 5 years and nobody would be happy.
