I have to give Pollard his due credit for the "vision" he seems to be achieving for Iowa State Athletics. It seems that his heavy handed approach is just what ISU needed to shake things up and stop settling for mediocrity. However, that being said, I think he might have gone too far in redesigning the uniforms/logo. I think it is a brilliant move to return to the rich cardinal and gold of yesteryear, especially after seeing the throwback uniforms in action this weekend. Unfortunately the new uniforms are as generic as I have ever seen. I'm not looking for an Oregon Ducks uniform, but I would love to see something that distinguishes our uniforms from the norm while still retaining that classic look. As I browsed the recent threads, I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who thought that the '77 uniforms looked better than next year's uniforms. I'm not sure what can be done, but I would love to see the new uniforms redesigned to something a little more similar to the uniforms on the field this week.
Finally, the I-State helmet, if it indeed was the helmet chosen, needs to be tossed. The athletics department needs to consult a design professional of some sort to take a look at the logo. (If they have already been consulting one, they need to move on and find a new one. Or if they have been ignoring the advice of the current design team, they need to start listening.) There was a great article in the register Friday regarding simplifying the Iowa State logo. I liked the new cyclone logo (especially when the leave off the Iowa State or Cyclones text, but it is overcomplicated. It reminds me of minor league baseball logos, nfl europe, and MLS logos. It lacks any 'gravitas' that one might find in let's say, the iowa logo, the Texas logo, the USC logo, or, as stated in the article, the nike "swoosh." We need something simpler, cleaner, and more easily recognized. The proposed I-State logo is frankly embarrassing. It dilutes and confuses what is already somewhat of a brand identity crisis at iowa state. This is a huge opportunity for us to establish an identity, and we seem to be stuttering at the prospect. If it were up to me we'd rework the original 2 color red cyclone a bit and use that. Hell, I'd even take the current cardinal-cyclone hybrid, if we'd leave off the Iowa state or the cylcones and let the logo speak for itself. What do you all think?
