This is not big time branding... This is a painful amateur attempt and looks like it was put together in a word processing program.
(I too am a part of a brand identity firm...)
OKAY, so I'm thinking maybe an email should be sent to JP telling him if he really wanted to have the majority of fans be pleased with our uniforms then we should take a poll to see if people like the throwbacks or 2008's better. By the sounds of it it seems like a lot of non-isu acquaintances have been giving lots of props to what we saw yesterday. When was the last time you heard someone make a compliment about our uniforms? I think the only thing that may needs change is the helmet. Maybe even stick CY on there just because there has been a large outcry of fans wanting CY back next year. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing just the ISU logo. We need something basic. What do you think?
Here's my take on the logo/uniform/brand issue...every time you mess with the logo you confuse the brand. Take John Deere, for example. In 170-some years the company has only had about 7 different logos ... the last three of which have been basically variations of the same basic leaping deer design. Colors have never changed. As a result, the Deere trademark is one of the most recognizable in the world. And EVERYBODY knows John Deere green and yellow. Does Deere change its trademark every time a new CEO comes on board? Nope. It's not about the board of directors, CEO or the company's individual divisions ... it's about the company as a whole. Just as it should be with ISU. Why is it that every time a new football coach comes along he feels compelled to change the uniforms, logo, or whatever? Pollard seems like a bright guy, so why doesn't he do the right thing and hire a good design firm that can put together a timeless look with long-term legs that becomes the ISU "look and feel" for the next 25 years? And forget the idea of approval by committee... when it comes to things as subjective as this, you're NEVER going to get consensus. Leave the decision up to the pros who know what's good and what isn't.
I heard you can buy them at Scheels.I saw some people wearing these at the game. Is there a place I can buy one without forking out $450 for the whole set?
For anyone to think with a multi million dollar budget and the future of ISU football on the line, that Pollard DID NOT hire the best designing firm to plan the uniforms and logo is absurd! Do any of you honestly think he's so stupid as to do a logo by himself on a word processor? If I recall, he hired a top consulting firm to hire Gene Chizik, a top design firm for the building projects. But when it comes to the branding decision for decades to come for Iowa State University, he decided to get his crayons out and do it himself? I don't buy that thinking. There are tens of thousands of dollars of apparel sales on the line, televison image and a logo that will last. Anyone who knows how Jamie Pollard operates knows better than to think he did this on his own.
