I must admit, my first thought was the same as you. But, I think I am Ok with this get. Highly regarded out of hs, signed with a top 20 program , but didn't get admitted. Juco and Tenn.......not impressive numbers at all. I am choosing to believe that the kid just needs a reboot. Come, set a year and practice against a couple of decent senior grad transfers, get acclimated to ISU and work to improve with no pressure. Then, be eligible with currently little competion for a starting spot. I like his size and strength. If he can defend, rebound and make a put back he will be OK. I agree, if all of our recruits are like this, we are probably headed the wrong way. But I think this is well worth the upside potential. It would appear he has had a lot of confusion surrounding his bb future......hopefully, ISU can provide three years of stability and the kid can grow as a player. JMHO

I don't see why so many of you hate this pick up. Hes got a year to improve and already has great size. We haven't had great success with his type player because of bad attitudes ala booker and McKay. Turn him into a scrappy rebounder/defender, that's what we'll need.
Steve Prohm and his coaching staff have forgotten more about basketball than you or anyone else on this board has ever learned about it. They know what they need and want in recruits more than you or anyone else on this board does.
That's good enough for me, and should be good enough for you.
In fairness it takes more than just being a good coach to make it in college basketball. I have no doubt that Steve can coach. The jury is still out on his staff's recruiting but he will have a big opportunity to land several more players by November.
Now that their star thug transfer is gone I assume it will go back to 24/7 transfer bashing with them.
I like the pickup, it'll be strange next season when we finally have a full stable of bigs but will have question marks in the backcourt.
I'm not worried: it's June. If these are the types of recruits he's signing in August/September, I will come around.

Most of you are missing the point. Sure, Kasongo's credentials aren't elite, or even good. But we had an extra scholarship. In the current college basketball environment, you have to fill it. The fact he had a nice offer list out of high school, has a great frame for P5 basketball, spent a year in a P5 program and has stats to suggest he can be a good rim protector, is a bonus. The only thing we gave up is the possibility of signing a mid-year transfer, who are usually gambles as well.
Prohm's recruiting prowess will be determined by the 2017 class, not a late transfer with an open scholarship in June.
If we didn't have so many spots in 2017, I would be a little nervous about this kid. But when you factor in that he has a pretty high upside, and the amount of spots left, this is a solid move, IMO.

If I recall I said he might be one and done here and you said no way he leaves early. He left for the draft before even getting here.
Kasongo is a big athletic post who will have a year to bang against the young guys in practice and make them better. He already has the athleticism and strength to play in the B12 and is only going to get better in the year he sits out. I see it as a swap for Ernst, and I don't think anyone would call that a downgrade.
Don't understand any negativity towards Prohm and his recruiting. Really liked what he's done so far in:
1. getting D-Jack to stay committed regardless of Monte coming back for his senior year
2. The 2016 HS recruits.. (Solomon, Jakolby, Cam Lard) Think at least two of these guys will be Iowa State favorites in a year or two... And don't forget Malou before NCAA got in the way of that
3. The man has proven to ALWAYS have a top notch PG running the show on his teams. For that reason I am not worried about him recruiting the backcourt. He now has depth in the front court with big, ATHLETIC guys who can all run the floor, get boards, and catch lobs. (great selling point to a PG) BTW.. isn't that what we want from our bigs as Iowa State fans?? Bigs who can out jump, out run, and out-dunk the other team's bigs? That's what Hoiberg wanted, and obviously Prohm has the same philosophy. That's why people need to take a wait and see approach with Kasongo, but it could be a hell of a pay off.
-And just cause its bothered me, Kasongo looks nothing like Edozie in his highlights. I realize they're both raw in their highlights, but come on people! Kasongo has a 42 inch vertical and he looks leaps and bounds more fluid athletically than Edozie.

Not to be a negative nancy here, but I am just as concerned about Prohm and his staff's recruiting as the rest of you. For those who are confident he will bring in talent here, what makes you feel that way? This staff has as little credibility as any staff I can remember at ISU. William Small was an assistant at an Ohio Valley conference school who has never recruited to a P5 school. Neil Berry was at High Point before this and before that he was an assistant at South Carolina when they were winning 5 games a year. What successful assistant goes from a P5 school to a mid-major? Then we have Danyial Robinson, who was at UIC before ISU. How the hell is he going to bring in All Big 12 talent with his minimal connections? Sorry just ranting here, but there is no excuse for not having a higher caliber staff at one of the Big 12's top bball schools.
