ISU vs UNI..

I just think we have a bigger talent gap than most of us like to admit. Wins of any kind this year are likely few and far between.

While I'd like to think we were just "off" against Kent State, I'm not sure that was the case.

UNI will likely be every bit the challenge Kent State was and we will have to play an "A" game with few, if any, mistakes to walk away with a W IMO.

"was it special teams or defense though?"

As I posted earlier #10 was playing on defense, not just special teams.

There was a 10 who played D. I didnt know who it was though.
must have been bell then because we all know it was carper

Cyclones.com has Bell in the participation report....

These are aside from the starters.
what is the "4S" and "8B" next to sandvig and bates? obviously it has something to do with having those #s doubled up but what do the S and B stand for?

edit: nevermind, all it took was for me to type their names to figure it out.

While I can't count more than 2 or 3 things that went our way Thurs night, I will say that Bass played very well. I have been looking forward to the day that Hicks graduated for 4 years now. I finally got my wish of seeing a RB that explodes through that hole!

it is good to see a RB make plays on his own. I love seeing an elusive back make something happen by being quick and breaking tackles.. Hart from Michigan had a real nice run yesterday and so did Cals true freshman. I dunno, I guess i am just optimistic of Gene Chizik and staff, and i know we have the talent to compete. I think Saturday will be much improved.

Hey guys, Panther fan here just wanting to give my 2 cents.

I think Iowa State will have two major advantages going into this game.

1. Our secondary is inexperienced. It is definately the weak part of the team. It got picked apart by a D2 qb for parts of last Thursdays game at the dome. I dont know how we plan to stop Blythe. Last year we had Dre Dokes (the guy who had the pick 6) to cover him but this year it will be a challenge.
2. Unlike last year I think your guys will come in as focused and energized as you would be for any game. Im not say ISU was unprepared for UNI last year but like any team does I believe they may not have been fully focused from the start believing they had an easy win. Since you want to get a win for the new coach youll be pumped and out for blood. We wont be able to sneak up on you like we did last year.

I think it will be a good game. See ya Saturday!

I think that was a really, really fair and accurate assessment...or prediction I suppose I should say. Well put. Dre Dokes was a stud and I totally agree with you that ISU could have a good time with UNI's secondary, operative word in the sentence being COULD. I do think Sanders is a GREAT qb and a real leader, I think he will have to do more to keep his team in the game than he did last year, he did almost everything right last year and I believe he'll have to do more of the same and then some. But I believe Sanders too will have plenty of chances to take advantage of ISU's secondary. ISU will need to get some kind of pass rush otherwise things will open up for him to move those chains. ISU's pass defense isn't looking a lot different from last years' yet (which is a bad thing in my estimation.) I am not a fan of just giving up the easy pass to the other team. If UNI is patient, they can move the ball. UNI's D will really need to play well, especially if ISU gets in the redzone a lot.

I am predicting and really, really hoping for something BIG outta JJ Bass in this one, maybe a 40+ yard run or some nice TD's. But he will definitely get attempts. Good luck Panthers (my 2nd favorite team)...but GO CYCLONES!!! oh yeah...& huck the fawks.

UNI had us down 21-7 late in the third quarter last yer. No reason to think that we can win easily this year.

I noticed that (see this thread).

Thanks for confirming that though...and I agree, time to ax that play.

However, I do want to see more balls thrown to Barkema. IMO, tight end was way underutilized both last year and in '05.

Did I read that correctly? FWIW, I want to see someone else get more time at TE. He can catch the ball if it's thrown right to him in space. Otherwise, Barkema has severe limitations: (a) He doesn't adjust well to balls that are thrown over his shoulder (remember a game two years ago in which he was wide open down field but got his feet tangled up and couldn't catch the ball); and (b) He falls down too much and doesn't come back to the ball (contributing to both of Meyer's picks against Kent State).

Barkema does get SOME of the blame for those two picks, but most of it goes on Meyer. Both passes were telegraphed and late.

Barkema did struggle his first year and some of his 2nd season. However, he is much improved. With the threats/speed we have at WR, Barkema is almost always going to be covered by a linebacker or zone covered by a safety. I think he wins almost all of those battles.

Start beating teams up with hitting the TE and they'll have to be more honest, allotting less coverage to Blythe. Todd + single coverage = points for ISU.

Praying this will happen.

- keep.

Barkema really isn't a receiving TE, while he is adequate, it is not his forte. He has also had fumbling problems. He is a solid blocker though and an overall good player, but our offense could really use a TE like Walter Nickel, who was very underutilized in my opinion. Hopefully Collin Franklin ends up being a stud because we lose our top 3 TEs after this season in Barkema, Howe, and Tinlin. Maybe Catlett gets moved back there, who knows

I'm not saying we're going to win easily against UNI this year, as I don't think anything is going to come easy for this team. However, do you recall how many blunders our team made in that game last year? The 2 muffed punts by Baum (one nullified by penalty only to do it again on the very next play)? The pick 6 horribly thrown by Meyer? The fumble into the end zone by Flynn? There were others but I couldn't stomach watching the Mediacom replay anymore and had blocked the live version out of my memory.

As said previously, UNI lost Dre Dokes, the guy who single-handedly took Blythe out of the game last year, and their defense is very young. Last year, our team didn't have the same sense of urgency going into the UNI game as I suspect (and EXPECT) that they will going into this game. These seniors are going to do everything they can to win this game, and I think the coaches were still feeling out the players and the players still feeling out what the coaches want them to do.

I expect our guys to come out guns blazing. By that same token, I do think UNI will be gunning hard for this game, too, but I think that even our talent deficient team is still more talented than UNI, and I think they'll be out to showcase that on Saturday.

I hope.

Good points ISU2002.

Our team did make plenty of mistakes Thursday night though. We made mistakes all of last year - UNI of course included in that.

So while your point is very, very valid - we're going to need to limit the mistakes to avoid starting 0-2. And, another big thing - if not bigger - is handling adversity (what we do following mistakes). We weren't very good at that in '06 and on Thursday.

The way to stop Blythe is to let us do it for you. It seems to happen all the time....

On the other hand... I had people with me at the UNI game last year that werent ISU fans and despite ISU barely winning, they kept praising me on how great of a game it was to watch. ISU rallied in the end to pull of the win against an unlikely foe. However, Appalacian State? UNI has potential like they do every year and they are the only other team in Iowa that i can root for when they arent playing ISU

Yup, we took three different pairs of casual fans to the Toledo, UNI and UNLV games. They were astonished that I left each game feeling like I got kicked in the gut - thrilled the just saw such great games.

They were right about the game itself being spectacular - just wasn't how any of 'em were supposed to go.
