I said that if we could win four games this year that would be progress...
Two wins is going backwards not forwards...when gene gets a defense that can tackle maybe then and only then will ISU win some games....:yes:
I was just saying that there was poor execution on the play. I didn't say it was the best play to run.
And...there goes your credibility out the door. Now we know why you are satisfied winning 1-2 games a season and going to a meaningless bowl game every 4 years.
Agree, bad execution. My problem with that play is that with the game on the line, you pick a play where all the little things have to go right for it to be successful instead of just having Arnaud plunge behind the guard.
Well, we are wrapping up another swift kick to the nuts visit to Boulder as Iowa State fans. This was our 5th consecutive visit to Colorado for the ISU game.
Some thoughts:
The tailgating at CU has taken a dramatic turn for the worst. We were the only vehicle in the lot for hours and we arrived at 8 am. We saw a few Iowa State fans peppered in the lots, but far less than before. There has been a some kind of new development where grills are no longer allowed in the tailgating lot. We were told not to use it by a lot attendant, but some kind CU fans let us know that they've been doing it for years.
The CU fans were unusually pleasant this time around. We had absolutely not problems with them before, during or after the game. We were very pleased to share some beer and conversation with them in a very friendly context.
Iowa State has talent. They can win. We had seats way down in front and have to tell you that the defense completely pooped out. There was a lot of huffing and puffing. Also on that last CU drive, they ran identical plays as they did on the previous scoring drive. Iowa State did not adjust the coverage. The defense played completely flat in the last five minutes of the game.

An Option on the Goal Line is only effective when the Defense expects you to pound it up the middle. That is what gives you the advantage outside.
Lining up in the Shotgun completely eliminated that threat, minimizing the advantage that an Option run gives us. If you are going to run an Option there, you HAVE to run it with the QB under Center.
Just a sickening play-call. Especially with a big, physical QB who could easily pound it for 12 inches.

Physical QB but an inexperienced center... Even Rothlesberger couldn't get yards if the center doesn't get a push... You never know what could have happened, I still don't mind the call...
It is a very valid point that running the option out of the shotgun didn't surprise the defense. Would've been better, IMO, if we had run it out of our big formation.
I think the Dan record was better than a bowl every four years. Thought Dan said in his resume that he went five times during his 15 years. That is every three years to a meaningless bowl. Oh well, that was so long ago I do not remember anymore. Please correct my stats. One year we went to the Houston Bowl and they could never pay the team. Then there was Shreveport 1 and 2? Insight in Phoenix? And the Iowa Superbowls 1-15. Ah, the old days.
I would agree with you totally on they pooped out. I watched fifteen plays of gastitis. Every Buff pass was completed, every Buff run counted. Guess we have no trustworthy backups developed yet. Shades of Dan No Competition Days. That should be solved the next time we visit Boulder.

You can do tons of things out of a shotgun, even in very short yardage. I seen Tebow runs sneaks or quarterback draws down at the goal line out of the shotgun. Even a jump pass over the middle.
If I was a linebacker, a shotgun formation wouldn't tip me off at all.
A QB sneak is even a worse option when you consider CU's interior DL. Hypolite (sp?) might be the best DT in the league. His partner is also very good. There is probably not a better duo in the league. Gene also said that CU's tendency is to bring blitz pressure up the middle. If they had done that, the option scores easily.
CU was not going to simply sit in a base GL defense as they could not afford to give up 6". They were going to sell out in one or two areas and be sure that they could stuff a particular play. They ended up guessing right while we didn't. As it turned out with CU bringing pressure off the edges and pinching the A gaps, a dive over or through the B gap probably would have been successful. I doubt that many armchair coaches were screaming for that play when they lined up.
Guess it was a bad read by the armchair qbs. I saw four defenders plugging the outside pell mell. We might have done a fade pass if we had ever completed one before, but alas we do not have a good play from two yards out. McF needs to work on that for next week Mizzou game.
Here's all I know. I started a business two years ago and haven't been able to afford getting to many games and certainly not being a contributor.
Well, I'm off the ground now. For '09, I'm buying four tickets and making a sizable contribution, and will be bring clients with me to the games and for tailgating. Was this loss horrible? Without question.
But with all the mistakes and foibles of this season, I believe now more than I ever have, and I'm going to be there for the resurrection. There are young players on this roster that are for real, but it's going to take much more time than I anticipated. But I'm going to be there for the rise of ISU.

If Tim Tebow was our Quarterback, I might not have as big of a problem with running a play out of shotgun. How many Heisman Trophies does Austen have?
There is a major difference in running that play with our offense and running it with Tim Tebow and the Florida offense.
Maybe we should practice the AA run up from shotgun and jump pass this week similar to Tebowmatic. That play would be awesome against Mizzou. Looking for Collin Franklin to make some red zone catches next week also. He is like a Todd peterson of nebraska. Still waiting for sedrick to make a bigger impact running deep. And ARob is looking good.
