Iowa State vs Iowa

From what I've seen of them this year (mostly last night, but parts of other games too) and in Fran's tenure, they're going to get after the boards, they're going to play hard, and they're going to test your defense as they are aggressive. On defense, they are fairly poor, though their zone is a pain in the ass as always if you aren't patient enough to make a couple passes. Once that is done though, wide open shots abound.

I think if we play our normal defense, and pass our way open with patient offense, we'll be fine unless they're just hitting every open shot they get.
Agree. I think we have a better team, but the great equalizer is if they get a couple guys to start hitting shots. They have uncharacteristically shot the ball poorly this year compared to their previous seasons.

Any time I've seen anyone just drive into Iowa's patented zone D they get thrashed and it's weird more teams don't do it.

Their press and ISU being careless with the ball out top will be an issue though.

I just want ISU to get through tomorrow with no injuries, and hold serve for three games and be ready for the real season starting 12/31.

Kris is not Keegan. That Duke game went about how I thought it would go.
I was impressed with Iowa’s freshman guard. He made some plays I haven’t seen an Iowa guard be able to make in awhile
Agree. I only watched about 10 minutes late first half, but with perkins and the new kid, they have prob their best guard play in a decade (low bar, but still).

Thought both teams were 10 ply soft defensively, but it was late af so probably that had something to do with it. Duke really didnt look too special from what i saw, but admittedly only small part of 1 game.

Does Rebraca weigh 200 lbs? Bob and Osun should be fine inside. Murray2 should be easy to take out of the gameplan, just like Murray1 last year. They will prob play zone; need to be patient and get inside, not just chuck open 3s. Going 2 for 27 from deep is a recipe for an L.

As long as you dont commit / get called for a million fouls and Iowa shoots 30 fts, this is a W.

If we play our game and don’t fall into the trap of trying to get up and down with them, we will win. Like St. John’s they want to play fast.

Force Iowa into tough shots, turn them over when they put their head down and drive and don’t give them second chance points.

Offensively just be patient and don’t let the ball stick. Attack the press and get dunks on the backend of it. Attack their zone and get lobs all night.

Iowa has been starting Ulis but maybe we see Bowen start tomorrow? Either way these will be the matchups imo..

Lipsey - Ulis/Bowen
Grill - Perkins
Holmes - Murray
Jaz - PMac
Osun - Rebraca

Unfortunately I think we will get into foul trouble and early. Iowa is great at creating contact. And with our all out aggressive defense, that’s not going to add up too well.

One thing I actually do like is that we do have some of that classic Hawkeye depth at center. Ward, Jones, and Osun can all play there. I'm more worried about us putting them on the line but that's 15 fouls right there.

I'd almost rather put Jaz on Murray. Jaz can match up with him inside and out and doesn't give anyone breathing room (and Murray isn't the type of player to force his way through pressure, he's more likely to just pass it). That would put Holmes on PMac, which would be a problem inside, but his game is more about shooting the threes and driving it, both of which Holmes should be able to counter with close defense and quick feet (and of all Hawks, I think the most prone to take a lane that we give him into a trap or charge).

I think our style of play is a bad matchup for them (see TCU) and that by all standards it should be a similar result to last year. BUT, we all know this is Iowa's Super Bowl and that they will come out with their hair on fire on their home court, which are three things that will probably make this game much closer than last year.

Their guards played well against Dukes soft defense. But we'll see how they handle having every pass challenged. Just need to make sure rotations are quick on defense and you don't leave the guy under the basket. Iowa has killed us over the years with our help defense leaving the guy open for a layup.

Clark will jack stuff up. The issue then comes that teams will chase her out there even though she hits about 10-20% from there. She is accurate from a certain spot out deep which looks like that is where she must practice from the most. Take away the others and let Clark go for 40. Make her move as much as possible on defense, which she doesn’t like to play, and tire her out.

Clark will hurt you more when she gets assists than points because she makes sure to get her points.

our guys also need to be disciplined, I can't stand it when I see out guys leaving their feet to defend a shot on the perimeter. Most of the times it is a pump fake anyone and our guy goes flying by resulting in taking himself out of the play leaving it 4 on 5.
