Iowa Beat Writers

Can someone explain what’s going on here?

Edit read enough other posts to figure it out. Disregard.

* Brommelkamp (KGYM in Cedar Rapids) asked for media credentials to cover the Cyclones in Chicago, after not being able to travel to cover either Iowa or Iowa State the first weekend

* Iowa State denied the request, citing a version of NCAA media rules that could be read as not allowing credential requests for the 2nd weekend if that outlet didn’t cover the 1st weekend

* Brommelkamp rightly responded with a copy of NCAA rules that expressly allows credentials in the way KGYM was requesting, it only needs approval from the school‘s athletic department

* ISU athletic department apparently holds firm in denying KGYM’s request - even though, as Brommelkamp points out, KGYM is part of the Cyclone Radio Network (even though, as I pointed out earlier, KGYM spends faaarrrr more time covering the Hawkeyes than the Cyclones, even airing Hawkeye football pre- and postgame shows despite not carrying actual Hawkeye games)

* And this whole spat gets played out in public on Twitter

Seems ridiculously petty to turn down any exposure for your program, no matter how minor it may be
From how I read the statement, it looked like the media passes were only available to those who also covered round one and round two. Matt schoulz was explaining why he couldn't grant him access per NCAA as opposed to using their absence in Milwaukee as a reason to deny him access.

Shoultz comment where he said "addressed it on the radio" is definitely some petty remark. But I'll admit I'm also biased cause I don't like Shoultz

He

I am not sure the right thing to do but this guy is a Hawk homer who rips on ISU all the time. Guessing he hasn't made it out to Ames in years....

Todd very likely deserved the reaction he got from Matt. Wouldn’t argue that at all. Matt has to be better though. What’s the harm in giving him credentials? Would giving Todd credentials take them away from someone else that has been covering us? If so, tell him that and this nonsense doesn’t happen. By saying no with little explanation other than the NCAA won’t let you (which Todd contests) you play right into their hands by being the bad guy. Suddenly the talk on the radio over here in CR isn’t about the cyclones, but our petty Director of Communications that wouldn’t grant credentials.

Todd needs to be better too, but he knows his audience. The Hawk fans were looking for anything they could latch on to today, and Matt put this one on a tee for them. Todd may be extremely petty, but he’s not dumb.

Seems like Schoultz is more in the wrong here than TB IMO.

What was this story? CW and Jared saying our coach was worthless?
CW mentioned that it would be difficult to keep Prohm and he got upset/defensive about it. I’m sure Jared’s critique of the team didn’t help. I thought Chris was trying to be very delicate when discussing it until it couldn’t be avoided.

Not a beat writer but in a real sad voice Rick Coleman on KWWL just said “we were all hoping for a couple of Iowa vs Iowa State match ups in the tourney, but it just wasn’t meant to be”

No Rick, we all weren’t hoping for that….this weekend went just how I wanted.

Lol

Seems kind of petty to turn down credentials to me, unless there are a limited number than can give.
Uhh wrong. When you're an outlet that literally never covers a particular school then ask that school for media credentials to a prestigious event like the Sweet Sixteen...which means you get in the game for free, comped meals, great seats, etc...that is a HELL NO without any hesitation. He's also a radio guy right, from Cedar Rapids? **** that. No way I'd give credentials.

This is where my head goes as well. Since the majority of their fans will be cheering against ISU, request the credentials from Miami.

He seems a decent guy. I've met him a few times. He's actually pretty fair with his reporting of ISU...at least outwardly on his program. He's somewhat passive/aggressive in his attitude about ISU. He's more than happy to bring up negative issues about ISU at times. (Like..."is Matt Campbell leaving" stories? "Big 12 possibly dissolving?" And constantly bringing it up is irritating to Cyclone fans...but they also have John Walter's on every Monday. And they'll also talk to Rob Gray occasionally. He's way better than some of the Hawkeye cronies he has that hate everything Iowa State. He's pretty fair. But at the end of the day his bread is buttered by Iowa athletics. And he is a Hawkeye fan.

He can pound sand. Said in his Twitter temper tantrum it’s his dream to cover second weekend of the tournament. He can wait until Iowa gets there.

Their media coverage is not even journalism. They’re paid fanboys and ball washers. Don’t blame our athletic department for not giving them credentials. The sense of entitlement runs deep with the Iowa crowd.
