Iowa Beat Writers

trying to find a video out there but someone made one few months back of all the newly hired basketball coaches in college this year and almost every single one of them mentioned "culture" in their opening speeches.

i sort of see what he's saying.. it is REALLY pounded into the ground from coaches.

whats different with CMC is he actually follows through with it and you can actually see the shift. not the case at many of these other programs.

Imagine bad mouthing a school for using the word culture when the program you fan boy for is unravelling at the seams because of that exact same c word. Be part of the solution, not the problem.
99.9% of that comment being said is because Mike hates the fact Matt Campbell is getting the attention he's getting while being successful at Iowa State. It's how Iowa fans work.

Oh absolutely but that statement coming from a member of the press is a really bad look.
For sure. However, if you're a media member who covers Iowa, you're an Iowa fan first and a member of the press second. If those are flipped, you won't make it because they won't allow it.

Hlas usually plays it down the middle, at least relative to the rest of the CR Gazette. He's a quirky guy with a distaste for the masses, so it's not surprising he's a little bitter toward Campbell and his cliches. I think he was trying to be funny, but the tweet came off as bitter and ignorant.

Is he really under the impression that the definition of culture is reserved for aspects of "high" culture. Is he confusing culture with "cultured"? Was he trying to make a joke? Or is he just mad that Campbell and ISU are on the receiving end of a lot of praise? It's somewhere in the middle. His article on coachspeak that he posted today shows he has a very narrow view of language itself, which is perhaps the most ironic part of all of this.

Yeah the timing of all of it makes me think it was certainly about Campbell, but your right in the irony that he doesn't like coach speak when his favorite team's coach is Kirk.

I honestly don't think he was trying to be funny, he was trying to make a point with his views on CMC and the coach speak he uses to motivate his players and future recruits. It was 100% a jab at CMC and it blew up in his face.

Oh, it was 100% about Campbell.

I get a little tired of Campbell's cliches, but I'm not playing for him, and I know what to expect at press conferences. But there are few people in the profession right now who can speak to culture with more credibility than Campbell. Sometimes cliches are just accurate descriptions in a setting where time is limited.

Hlas has a wry sense of humor. I think he meant to amuse himself and bask in his own cleverness. But his delivery came off as too directed and bitter. Where he can usually mask a distaste for ISU, it came through. In short, a mild-mannered sports writer had had ENOUGH of Matt Campbell.
