Wow. Ferentz just announced he's sticking with Petras against Nevada. He's blatantly trolling the entire Hok fanbase now.

I felt 7-5 was the ceiling for this ISU team prior to the season. I now can see 8-4 as realistic, 9-3 being the ceiling. I had counted the Iowa game as a loss. Seems like potential for L's abound on the schedule still, as the Big 12 doesn't appear to have any gimme's (even KU looks like they won't lie down for anyone). But the Big 12 is without a playoff caliber team, so could also see ISU beating anyone left on the schedule.

Iowa I had projected as 8-4 (placed a bet on them to hit the over 7.5 on win total), ceiling of 10-2, since they were able to do that last year against all odds. Thought that lightning could possibly strike twice. Through the first half of the game Saturday, I was feeling strongly reinforced in that belief. Over the next 30 minutes, the beer goggles fell off and everyone saw Iowa for the 300 pound chick they truly are, and I think it's clear that barring some kind of whole sale change with the offense, Iowa is staring down the barrel of 7-5 as an absolute best case scenario. I would project 5-7 with 4-8 being the floor at this point. They can still win a handful of games the Kirk way of being stubborn with offensive personnel and play calling, and living off of turning the opponent over and making special teams plays, but as we all saw Saturday, even by generating 5 ISU turnovers for all intents and purposes, it wasn't enough.

If Iowa wants to go bowling this year, a lot will need to change. Season is still quite young, and Kirk is a wily old man that has done this song and dance many times. I would bank on him to get this figure out and at least get Iowa to 6-6 if not 7-5.
As long as Iowa can avoid laying an egg out at Rutgers next weekend I think they will be 6-6 or 7-5. Other than Purdue, Michigan, and Ohio State, the rest of their games are 50/50 at worst.

I congratulated ISU on the win. Just my opinion that both teams have a lot to work on if they want the season they want to have. I feel both teams are 7-5 ish at this point. That can change though.

I think part of that is reasonable in that ISU clearly had many, many fuckups. But those are all for the most part in the "correctable" category. Explain to me how Iowa's offense is "correctable"? How in the **** can that offense get 7 wins??? I mean it's the big 10 west but still. Christ's sake, it's so bad it's literally never even been done before.

IMO this probably says more about Padilla than it does Petras. I think it boils down to Iowa just flat out doesn't have a competent starter. Throwing Padilla out there to appease the fans doesn't solve anything if he sucks.

Iowa tried this last year and it didn't work, that's why they're not doing it again. Padilla is not a good QB whatsoever. Neither is Petras. It just so happens that Spencer is the only guy in that room that puts Iowa into the best position possible to win games.

It's a detriment to no one else but the staff for failing to recruit and develop their QB room.

Not in any order:

SDSU = 1
NW = 2
Neb = 3
Nevada = 4
IL = 5
Rutgers = 6
Wisconsin = 7

I think WI will be toughest and IL maybe second but the others are very beatable even with Petras.

I do agree that we unfortunately played down to Iowa’s level. We’ll need to step it up versus better competition.

Our redzone failures kept the game close but Iowa was never even close to a threat to score or tie the game after the 99.5 yard TD drive. Iowa is currently a national embarrassment so the narrative being pushed out east is an attempt to rope Iowa State in with them.

I think there's a very real possibility that Padilla is worse.
He is worse. But I really don't know what Iowa's going to do. It'll be a fun experiment to watch play out. The stat that stands out the most for me isn't Spencer's total yards, yards per game, or his lack of TD's, it's his YPA (yards per attempt) this year : 3.9...

Guys, that ******* sucks. Lol

Petras will look fine Saturday. Incarnate Word just put up 55 on Nevada. And then they'll roll with Petras into Big Ten play.

I'm not betting on him. He's that bad. He's missing wide open guys left and right. Also, UC Davis had a QB that threw for 273 yards and 3 TD's vs. South Dakota State's defense last week.

I was shocked at how many passes were thrown over heads. He would kind of scramble, would have a wide open guy by the sideline, and air mail it.

I watched the SDSU game at our tailgate and it was the same thing. I honestly thought he'd get it dialed in a bit more but it was the exact same..

Other teams are going to watch the first two games and just key the run.. Iowa can't throw the ball downfield because their line is abysmal and they also have the most inaccurate QB at this level. Stack the box, send some pressure, and make Petras throw the ball short into small windows.

Nevada is giving up nearly 6 yards per play. They're much closer to SE Missouri St than South Dak State. This feels like it could be Petras' first 200 yard regular season passing effort since the Maryland game last year.

The defense is going to have to start throwing shut outs. It's like a team starting a position player on the mound in baseball. The box will be completely loaded until Petras somehow shows an ability to beat someone. Their offense will do nothing.
