Interesting Stat

I know you didn't say it here, but a lot of people continue to beat the drum that Nebraska totally gave that game away. ISU was lucky to get that many turnovers but if you watch them they also did a lot of things to create turnovers including positioning, stripping the ball, and hitting ball carriers hard.

Once kNU gave it up a couple of times that D could smell blood in the water and it was in the heads of the kNU players - a dangerous combination. It isn't the first time that an ISU D has created a ton of turnovers to beat a Lincoln team either. In 1976 ISU forced 8 Nebraska fumbles and intercepted one as well.

I think I just need to put this here . . .

Once again, this completely ignores the fact that McCarney took over the worst program in the nation and Rhoads took over a poor program, but not nearly the worst in the country.

Also, I don't care what you have to say about Mac having an easier schedule. We can't use the tough schedule excuse if we lose to FCS teams in back to back years.

McCarney almost always beat the teams he was supposed to. Rhoads doesn't always beat the teams he's supposed to, but he pulls off wins that should be losses. Neither of them is head and shoulders above the other.

Well this is just flat out wrong. Mac had some talent on his teams, all things considered. His biggest issue was that he DIDN'T always beat the teams he should and never beat the ones he shouldn't.

I keep hearing about how Dan only had to play the good south teams every other year but that's really only the half of it. Baylor stunk, Mizzou stunk, KU stunk, Okie St stunk, A&M was never consistant, Nebraska was down for a good chunk of his time and Dan also had the benifit of Iowa stinking for a good 4-5 years. It is literally night and day as far as the strength of the teams we play now.

Agreed. Mac took advantage in 2000, 01, 02 before most of those programs started to rise again. What does stink is that Mac in 01/02 was only behind Snyder(?) in terms of tenure and having his foundation in place when Mizzou, KU, OSU, etc were bringing in new coaches. It didn't take long before those programs caught and passed ISU by.

I'd say Mac faced 5 Nebraska teams that obviously weren't on par with what they had been. Of course by then, OU/Texas were becoming the preeminent powers...but Mac could avoid them every couple years.

I think overall the Rhoads/Mac comparisons are not fair. Early Mac days are an incredibly different era of ISU football, than when Rhoads took over. I do think its fair to perhaps compare Rhoads 2009/2010 with say Mac's 01/02 teams or his 04/05 quads. In that equation, things seem like they are pretty equal. However Mac had easily cemented the program as his own by then against weak schedules(04/05) and really didn't get the job done.

Rhoads OOC schedule in 09 outside of Iowa wasn't daunting, but he was also learning on the job. That 09 team also didn't have the outright defensive acumen the 05 squad, and still won 7 games.

I do think Rhoads wins more games with 2005 team for instance with that defense, along with Meyer, Blythe and Hicks at their peak. I have my doubts about Mac's conservative style winning as many 2012, with the QB scrap heap ISU had.

I give Rhoads a small nod.

I feel like the Nebraska and Texas Mccarney was facing was not the NU and UT Rhoads was up against. NU is nowhere near where it was in the 90s and lets be honest, who didnt beat Texas that year? That was probably texas's worst year in the last 30. Those wins were both fun, but as far as 'achievements' when looked back in hindsight they arent really as major. And we still havent repeated against texas despite the fact that theyve been in a historical lull.

I agree. With Texas and Oklahoma no longer superpowers (or even powers based on last year's bowl games) I don't think the Big 12 is what it used to be. Our recent bowl performances have been down, and watching the games tonight it doesn't look like the conference is off to a very impressive start this year. Oky State is picked in the upper half of our league and couldn't dominate a team picked low in the Mac. TCU as our best rated team should be destroying a middle of the pack big 10 team, but Minnesota is within 2 scores in the 4th quarter. Plenty of other non-conference games to be played but I'm no longer going to brag about us being one of the best power 5 conferences until we start proving it.
