How stable is Big 12?

People are losing sight of what is important in college athletics, which is winning national titles. No one brags how much money their school is bringing in when they are losing (Texas fball & UCLA bball). If universities are smart they are going to put themselves in the best position to win national titles. The big 12 is the best place for Oklahoma and Texas because they have the easiest rode to the playoff. That is why they will stay in the big 12, I'm honestly not worried they are leaving soon.

1. Texas needs to play other Texas teams, it is embedded into Texas football culture since the 70's. Other conferences will not take Tech or Baylor with them.

2. Oklahoma will more than likely have to take OK State wherever they go. Big 10 and SEC are better off keeping the same than adding both schools.

3. Pac 12 is a mess, no one wants to touch them with a 12 ft pole.

It's a chicken/egg thing. B1G didn't add Maryland and Rutgers to win championships for their league. They did it for revenue. Dollars and revenue are the drivers. So, yeah, getting more championships gets you more viewers which gives you more revenue.

The scary/interesting thing is how the revenue picture looks in the future. Is the B1G model - based on cable subscriptions to remain viable in the future with the trend of cable cutting? With more internet and mobile based content the players like Netflix, Hulu, Google, Amazon could become major players in the very near future. How does the Big XII play the unknown future of that? Only time will tell if we make the right decision(s). Again, that's what's scary and interesting about it and what this discussion is about.

Honestly I can't believe how many Texas fans on forums want to leave for the BIG and say they have sources etc that they will..Why they would want to walk away from running a conf to playing their games up North and open up the BIG even more to recruit Tx is just beyond stupid.

I know we're all hung up on GOR but I think it looks significantly different 10 yrs from now. I think schools or maybe conferences start to get paid for eyeballs similar to the way youtube ads pay out based on the numbers of viewers. You can't tell me that Rutgers really has the NJ/NY market. The "eyeball payment system" would provide a lot more realistic value to each team and/or conference. This would also encourage schools to schedule more competitively for one as they would make more money for better matchups.

Just my 2 cents but change is definitely coming.
 
Honestly hearing Barry Tramel on recent Podcast flat out say that without a doubt OU is gone in 2025 is pretty scary folks..That would be like John Walters saying ISU is gone...it's something you know he's been told by AD and or President..JP has got to be freaking out honestly cause I am. I know it's 8 years from now but that goes fast. Maybe it will all get worked out and in 8 years big 12 is a premier conf and healthy and all will be good but I'd put the odds of this conference being together in 8 years at about 10% and I was one who said TX and OU would never leave. Very concerned for future of my Alma Matter..

I've been leaning this way for a while. The B12 is done. There is nothing that suggest the trend of instability and dysfunction will suddenly stop. If different leadership had been in place at UT and the B12 a decade ago, we probably could have raided the ACC or Pac 10 and secured a spot as a super conference with the nation's first conference network, but it didn't pan out that way obviously.

What a shame.

I think, right or wrong, they feel like the upperclassman living in a dorm.

2025 is SOOO far away. Sports rights bubble may have popped by then, and we may see conferences contract rather than expand. I was reading that Fox and ESPN will lose something like 6 million subscribers between now and when the Big10's media deal is up to be renewed. Why would they want to pay any other conference EVEN MORE for Okie? It makes no sense.

Also, as we have heard from many places including our AD, there will be no expansion without an extended GOR. So we will likely find out sooner rather than later if this league is done.

Either way it is very very important that the Big12 does good this year in football.

Possibly, however who else do you think they should have grabbed instead? Otherwise we'd be the small conference with less media markets and ripe for picking for more money. It was no secret Mizzou wanted Big 10 (which kicked off the mess) and Colorado wanted the PAC-10. Nebraska would've been happier and stuck with OU, however who knows whether they'd bring along OSU, KU, KSU, and ISU for the ride.

Actually it was Swofford and the ACC that kicked off the mess when they raided the Big East for Miami, Va. Tech, etc. in the early 2000s.
 
Cause nothing says west coast pac 12 like Ames Iowa, so make the student athlete fly all over hell at our entertaining expense cause of USC and Oregon? **** then pay em then, cause it isnt in the best interest of the student athlete, well like now, it's all about the almighty ******* dollar to these network ********.

Been reading that Oklahoma will survey the landscape after GOR as they question the stability of the Big 12. How Missouri of them. Missouri started all of this mess and Texas took the ball and ran with it to the 20 and kicked a field goal. Ever since it has been all Oklahoma creating this instability.

They tried unsuccessfully to bail to the Pac 12 and bring others along. Then Bowen just will not allow the commish to be the singular voice for the conference. Bashing the Big 12, saying expand then not expand then expand, need a conference network then saying won't have one. Plus, their regent weighing in on matters and disagreeng with Bowen.
Not really sure what their damn problem is these days with the Big 12- 11 a.m. kickoffs, still the Longhorn Network maybe, trailing the Big 10 and SEC in revenue even though they make a boatload anyways? Count me in hoping someone else wins the Big 12 but them. If they go to the Sugar Bowl, do Oklahoma fans chant "SEC...SEC" right along with the SEC representative's fans?
 
Baylor and TCU are being referred to as powerhouses with long storied histories. They aren't. They are schools that have had good success the last several years. 8 years until the GOR is up. IF Campbell has success that includes a breakout season or two, then Iowa State becomes more attractive then the teams we are talking about adding. Give us a winning football team in a sold out 60,000 plus football stadium. Excellent Basketball. And Excellent Academics. We are not the wallflower people claim. Other schools may be located in higher population areas. But no one cares about them.

Add to that a fanbase that is representative of a university the size of Iowa State - I meet way too many Iowa State alums who don't care about sports or even supporting their alma mater in any way. Maybe being successful in football will bring more of these people out into the light.
