How far can Iowa go?

Saying the Iowa defenses is just ok is just being an Iowa hater. I'm truly ok with that but to be accurate just say "I hate Iowa". Saying Iowa's defense is just ok is the equivalent of saying Troy Davis was just an ok RB or Seneca Wallace was just an OK QB. If you cannot give credit where credit is due that you lose credibility. It is acceptable for Iowa and Iowa State to be good at stuff, no matter who you cheer for, jeeez.

I would say that the state of Iowa has two of the best defenses in the country, in different manners

Iowa state stops people I mean look at the yardage they have allowed. They had a bad half at Baylor, and then they gave up 70 yards in the second half. The offense and special teams have let them down.

Iowa has been incredibly opportunistic, and they have had to be. The offense isn’t going to drive the ball down the field consistently. But consistently giving them short fields has masked that weakness

give them credit for taking advantage of what they have been given

the defenses are different, but both have been exceptional

Lets look at the age of those EIU players on that Oline.

LT 2nd year in the program back up 4th year in the program
LG 5th year in the program backup 4th year in the program
C 4th year in the program back up 4th year in the program
RG 1st year in the program backup 3rd year in the program
RT 3rd year in the program backup 2nd year in the program.

On defense I would agree that you did not have much returning, but on the OL, EIU had quite a bit, they also had a lot of returning players that were beat out by younger players.

If you are going to talk about EIU football, at least have some clue what you are talking about, instead of shooting off your mouth. Now how about you label this DUMB and just leave.

In a zone running scheme the 5 OL need to work as one seamless unit. Acting like guys in the program for 2-3 years (when they lost one whole spring and summer to COVID) can just step in and play like 5th year Sr. is just crazy dumb. Plus Shooter wasn't playing at all the 1st 3 games at LG, and was rotational in games 4&5, so claiming we had a 5th year guy at LG is disingenuous. The fact of the matter is that Iowa had new starters at 4 of the 5 OL spots for the first 4 games. Pretending that you know anything at all about football is cute, but acting like you know more about Iowa football than me is just downright stupid.

Lets see how ISU handles replacing 4 of the 5 starters on the OL like Iowa did next year. If the two deeps show us something, it says ISU will have new starters, but all will be 2-4 years into the program, according to you there won't be growing pains at all. I kind of doubt they will start fast considering your 5th year Sr players with tons of starting experience have experienced a slow start this year.

Speaking of questions, have you had a chance to read this article?

Hope the boys can handle all this attention. Gotta be hard to focus when the media is constantly gushing about you.

Why won’t you answer simple questions?

Everyone already knows you support racists. But those questions weren’t even difficult. Even someone of your limited intellect should be able to answer them.

Something I find interesting about this weekends matchup is that PSU blitzes 45% of the time. They have very talented ends, but they only have like 8 sacks on the year.

The only team that blitzes more in the big ten (but has better “production”): Maryland.

McDonald was the guy I most wanted to see this year because there is a lot of hype around him. Tell me if I am wrong, but he looks kind of light and does not do much vs. the run. Super freaky athletic though. Fair? He should have a chance at post season awards but not sure he has the stats as of now. Figure there are 2 edge players on each of the 3 All-American teams...is he really a top 6 Edge in the country? Maybe he is, but his numbers are going to have to get up. Numbers-wise he isn't any better than Van Ness or Evans. Deep breath 1969, I am not saying those guys are his equal. I am just looking at stats to check production.

McDonald - 3.5 Sacks, 5 tackles
Van Ness - 4 sacks, 4 tackles
Evans - 3 sacks, 6 tackles

I can't speak to the Iowa front, but ISU's 3 down linemen front allows people to double up on McDonald more often. And when they don't, he gets held like crazy. He's still able to create problems/pressure, but on normal downs our DL is trying to fill gaps and consume OL so our LB/S can rally to the ball.

McDonald is a beast, but he's not a top-6 edge. Could he be next year? Sure. He kind of abused our green OTs.

I agree with besserheimerphat in that Iowa should have been in more BIG Championship games...that Wisconsin hurdle seems to always be in our way. Unfortunately those Hawks to the NFL rarely involve a skill position player, which would certainly help put some points on the board to go along with what is typically a solid D.

I think Iowa totally mishandled their WR group to start the year. Just because Tracy and Ragini were the top returning guys does not mean they are #1 and #2 WRs. They should have been left in the slot where they were able to produce with Smith and ISM outside. Johnson, Jones with the 6-3 guys in Hudson and Ritter should have been working outside from the get go.

Wish I had your confidence. I think Penn St. has learned that Iowa will most likely not be ready for all the blitzing that they will do. Couple that with an immobile QB who struggles with making quick decisions and if I had to bet this one, I'm taking PSU ML.

My thoughts (home games are bolded):
Penn State - Iowa's toughest matchup on their schedule. I think PSU pulls this one out and their defense finally exposes Iowa's offense for what it is.
Purdue - Hawks
Wisconsin - Toss up but I'll take the Hawks
NW - Hawks
Minnesota - Hawks
Illinois - Hawks
Nebraska - Hawks

Best case for Iowa - 11-1
Worst case - I could see 9-3 but I really don't see anything worse than that barring injury or something else.

I haven't watched much of you guys since the State game, but have your OTs been playing better? IMO that was a weak link against us.

Iowa needs to find some plays designed to get the ball out of Stanzi's hands fast, likely meaning he may be throwing into some tight windows. The one thing you have to like about Stanzi is he is fearless, meaning he's not afraid to throw a ball (that often needs to be thrown) after making a mistake. Something our QB has a hard time with after being here 4 years.

I will be at my sister's place tomorrow and will undoubtedly be watching the game (they are somehow big Hawk fans even though her and her husband have no ties to the school and didn't become fans until moving to STL 12 years ago). Good luck tomorrow.

The rotated so many guys through the OT spots, and OL in general those first few games, that it drove me crazy. I get finding your best 5 but what the heck were they doing in the pre-season? They are pretty much down to a starting 5 now and it seems to have calmed things. At least play calling-wise (not a fan of BF at all) he should be able to better call things based on known strengths and weaknesses of each guy because he knows who is in there at all times. No matter, we have had veteran OLs before and they come in like they are completely shocked by the PSU blitzes. Definitely a game where a little more athleticism under center would help.

Iowa will win 34-14 tomorrow with 4 Penn State turnovers. Iowa -1.5 is as easy as it gets.
Get to DraftKings and book it. Mortgage your home if you have to! You could walk in next week and pay that baby off completely and take a fancy trip to boot.

Even after the win today, I think Iowa’s ceiling is winning the Big10 regular season championship. I don’t see Iowa getting over the hump and win the Big10 conference title.
