Hoiberg Raise - now makes $2.6M

When you are highly sought after as Fred, yes. What do you think Fred would do after those 3 years? He could get $2.6 for the remaining 7 years without even taking two calls.

I'm not disagreeing with you Swarth but who's to say in 3 years pollard doesn't up Fred's contract to 3 million a year for the remaining 7 years... Which would you take then? We do know that Pollard has upped Fred's contract twice (I believe?) now so who's to say he wouldn't do it again after another sweet 16 birth or maybe an elite 8 birth? It's all hypotheticals I suppose.

The same person to say in one year that 3-year contract is turned into a 5 year deal at 4 million?

This. If Fred keeps bringing it, you better believe the money will keep coming.

You're throwing hypotheticals out there about his NBA career which the same could be said for a college career. You can look at it from both angles you know.
What? You are the one that tossed out the hypothetical. You changed the contract for goodness sakes. I responded in-kind.
If you look at the comparison that I responded to, a person with Fred's resume is not getting a better deal making almost half a million less per year. Let's just be happy he is giving us a home team discount.

Little known fact: he has a series of look-alikes that he utilizes (much like Saddam Hussain did) that randomly disperse his dreaminess across the Midwest. I actually once saw someone that looked exactly like Fred at Jack Trice Stadium last year on the concourse getting his own food. Obviously it wasn't him because a person of his stature wouldn't get his own food. But man, it looked exactly like him.

He has a couple brothers. Could have been one of them.

Mine was in response to your hypothetical of him being able to get a 2.6 million dollar gig after the 3 year one is up:huh:... I just like playing devils advocate with people though

$3 million for 3 years is much better than $2.6 million for 10 imo. It is not as though Fred will have trouble finding a high paying job for the other 7. He could easily go back to college and get $2.6.

Maybe he cares about the welfare of his young family and prefers the stability of a 10-year deal over short-term contracts that could send him and his kids all across the continent for an extra $400k/year?

Novel thought, I know.

I worry less about Coach Hoiberg moving to the NBA as a head coach than I do as a general manager. Fred is great at identifying and maximizing talent, and he has experience there as well. My $.02.

For as little recognition as NBA head coaches get, I can name even fewer GMs. Nobody leaves a legacy as a GM. If Fred keeps doing what he is doing at ISU, he will make more money and leave a larger legacy here than he could ever do in any capacity in the NBA.

Fred started at the bottom end of the salary range based on no head coaching experience. His results in a short term have produced multiple increases due to this. Well deserved and smart on Pollard's part both starting him at the bottom and increasing his salary as Fred has proven he can produce results with minimal head coaching experience.

Even if he is not doing it the right way :jimlad:

I love Fred and know you have to pay to play but it is hard to get excited about someone now making 10x more than needed to live like a king in Central Iowa. Oh, and I am bummed veisha got $hi+canned too.

I agree with the salary increase.

To play devil's advocate - why increase it? His contract was already set, he got his bonuses from the tourney, and if he wants to leave it's not a money issue (since no other terms changed).

Good Morning, Sunshine!

In my opinion it is all about making sure that he feels everything is being done to make him welcome and appreciated. When things aren't going well and he wonders why he is putting himself and his family through all of the recruiting trips and being at the whim of 17 year old kids it pays off for him to not be able to point at anything where ISU did just enough to get by as far as appreciating him is concerned.

I went on the record before as saying he wouldn't bolt if he didn't get a raise this year since he has gotten them both of the last two years, but at the same time given where he started and what he has accomplished it certainly is the right thing to do.
