I'm still amazed at all the idiots who wish we still had McCarney.

The McCarney bashing is getting old. Obviously he won't be back. But to those wishful thinkers, let them be optimistic. Maybe what some want is a return to McCarney-esque records. Sure, the program was stagnated the last several of years, but it was largely stagnated at 7-5 or 7-6 (apart from two bad years). And maybe 7-5 isn't so bad. It sure beats 3-9 and 2-10. Let's please face reality and come to terms with the fact that we probably won't be national title contenders any time soon or possibly ever. We are a traditionally losing program. Of course I, like all Cyclone fans, have huge hopes and dreams for the cardinal and gold. But McCarney was, and still is, taken for granted. Let people praise him for what he did here and sentimentally wish his graceful return no matter how bizarre it might seem to some. The continued bashing of possibly the greatest coach in our history seems a little harsh.

Well said...

He's not coming back however...

i'm not saying he's coming back or should come back, it's just difficult to see so many posts regarding him as being a potential bad thing for ISU

Re: Paul Clark lets Loose!

That's it. Our next head coach absolutely MUST give Paul Clark better access. Hand it to him on a silver platter.

Re: Paul Clark lets Loose!

I remember a lot of us two years ago ripping Dienhardt from TSN a new one because not only was he not impressed with the Chizik hire, but he thought it was a downright horrible hire. He really thought our man should have been Kelly - and most of us thought he was just pissed off because he got it so wrong.

Maybe Dienhardt actually knew what he was talking about. Sorry, dude...

Funny thing is that Dienhardt thinks he can do well at Auburn...

It's no secret that I was/am a huge McCarney fan. Coach Mac WAS Iowa State football for me. When Pollard first came here, he said that McCarney was one of the reasons he came. I still maintain that, had McCarney gotten the support that he would have gotten under Pollard earlier in his career, he would be the Iowa State coach today.

Mac brought in some damn good assistants. Iowa State wouldn't pay to keep them around. By the time Pollard came in, he had some lame duck assistants that Mac was loyal to, to a fault. Awefully ironic we are ******** about a coach not being loyal, when we canned a guy for being too loyal....

Re: Paul Clark lets Loose!

It was stated in another thread, but I can definitely understand missing it on a day like this:wink:

Brian Kelly was the first choice, but he was waiting around for the Michigan State job. By the time he got back to JP, he had missed his deadline and they had already agreed to a deal with Chizik.

And now you know.....the rest of the story:wink:

Thanks. I've been on a ton the last 2 days and read a lot, but it's hard to follow everything with so many threads and so many people posting.

remember at the time that Dan was fired things were really bleak. We were awful. JP thought no one would buy season tickets we needed a glimmer of hope for the following season.

Re: Paul Clark lets Loose!

. I wasn't ready to throw him out yet, but for all the freak'n delay of game penalties, illegal formation/player on the field crap, it was becoming apparent that player talent wasn't our only problem.

Well put. I thought these would be the least of our worries, given all the time spent on discipline and helmet-aligning.

I've calmed down a bit on this. I still think he can go to hell, but this years performance was a sloppy disaster that screamed poor coaching. Our players do deserve better.

Not a problem. Like I said, I definitely understand. I've been bouncing from board to board, and it's hard to remember what I read where. There seems to be a common theme, though......

Yeah, testing the language filters.

Glen Mason - No, he didn't do anything at Minnesota and he had Minneapolis to recruit.
McCarney - No, he couldn't recruit. I think we all respect his loyalty and what he did but we fired him for a reason.
Cooper - No, no current recruits would even know who he is.
Mark Farley - No recruiting ties.

Why do we want other peoples trash? If we get a good coach, we will start to win. If we win, there is no reason to leave. All schools will be looking for a new coach sometime, that is how it works now. You lose a few games, you get fired. You win a few games you shouldn't you get hired by a BCS school.

It is too bad McCarney couldn't take the next step. It is too bad Chiz didn't stick around to see it through. I just hope they hurry and hire someone to salvage a recruiting class and cut down on the amount of time it takes to build a team.

Oh yeah, and I don't think the cupboard is as bare as when Gene got here. That might help when it comes to hiring a coach.

Well the only southern guy who I ever saw stick around up north is Hayden Fry. I think you stay away from Tubberville.

I don't like Tuberville but he is a very good coach. However, he is also a coach that is flirting with other schools every year (for those of you that don't know)...that is why many at AU did not like the guy that much. Of course, now that the AU faithful see his replacement, I think they are beginning to appreciate him a little more!

I'd like to hear who some of these "damn good assistants" were under McCarney. From my chair I don't see any sort of "Danny Mac Coaching Tree" at all.

This is one of the hallmark failures of his 12 years and one of the reasons that certain coaches have great and long term success...they can spot and hire top notch coaches that ultimately go on to better gigs.

Re: Paul Clark lets Loose!

You know... Chizik leaving very well could be a blessing in disguise. I mean, I think we all were upset about how horrible our defense was this year. I think we were mostly upset at how there didn't seem to be improvement. This was worrisome given Chizik is supposed to be a defensive-minded coach.

I do believe our next head coach can't do any worse than what we'd probably see next season anyway with Chizik at the helm.

SO! Lets look at this a little differently and try to get someone who is proven.

TCU's Peterson gets my vote!
