You're hitting the nail on the head here, over and over. We hired one of the nation's hottest commodities at the time. Along the way, a place he has worked at before had a surprise opening (well, Tubby's on the hot seat every year, they say), and they came calling.

When you're in high demand, and a good job comes calling, it's hard to say no. Now we move on to the next challenge: Find and get behind the new coach.
 
Maybe another Johnny Orr situation will happen...our AD calls a top tier head coach at a major program to get some ideas and possibly permission to speak to an assistant and we end up getting the top tier head coach from the major program himself!

God, how I would love for that to happen! I will be praying hard for that tonight! I hope our team Chaplain is praying as well...oops, I forgot we don't have a team Chaplain.

Maybe it will be Pete Carroll. He's probably tired of no change of seasons in LA and he's won the Pac 10 so many times now that it's probably getting boring and he needs a new challenge. Plus he won't have to buy new clothes, his wardrobe already has all the right colors. It looks like a win/win situation to me.

I think we throughly pissed him off when we didn't offer the job to him when he wanted it in the '80's before he took the ASU job. Maybe he's over it by now though......I think he's a pretty good coach, would be ironic for me since I am an OSU fan as well.

I saw one of his Alabama teams beat a super ISU team coached by the legendary Dan McCarney in Shreveport and then one of his A&M teams beat another super ISU team (also coached by the legendary Dan McCarney) like a rented mule in Ames for Homecoming a few years later...38-0 or something close to that.
 
Why not at least making a run at Tubberville or Fulmer at least we could throw them a lot of money with Gene leaving.If Pollard got either one of those that would be amazing. Hell all they can do is say no

It would be a very short phone call, and we would never hear about it. Pollard probably wouldn't get more than 30 seconds with their agents.

Those coaches have big egos and will want to coach in a situation in which they can have the most success. Something a lot of you don't realize is coaching at ISU is perceived to be one of the hardest jobs in the nation:

You play in one of the best conferences
You aren't even the most popular team in the state
You have the lowest recruiting budget in the Big XII
Out of state recruits know nothing about the school

I love ISU but those above factors will not entice any big name IMO.

I like this idea as well. I think his age would be an issue though. He played on the Dirty Thirty team. He has to be pushing 70+. Don't know that he would want to take on the rigors of a HC position again.
 
yeah right. mike singletary is probably at the top of any and all open coaching spots for the pros. i would have died and gone to heaven if he came here. it would be one step down from ditka.
 
I think we need to go after a current head coach, someone that doesn't need to learn on the job the way GC did.
