Head Coach

I would love to see somebody that was let go elsewhere like Glen Mason. I know that really isn't that popular of a choice but I loved his offense and he'd bring back a running game. Plus Arnaud would be as good of a quarterback as he had at MU.

If you want a Glen Mason type offense without having a jerk as a coach (mason), than pick Loney. While Loney was at UM they led the big 10 in rushing.

Loney would be a great hire, but I bet he is close to Mac, and wouldn't work for Pollard. IMO!

We need to go after the best possible coach...period. All of you that are looking to "marry" your coach until "death do us part" are foolish.

Looking for the "Iowa boy" that will stay "forever" will lead only to mediocrity at best and misery at worst.

With that in mind, who did better at ISU the Iowa boy or the "big name coach"?

Was Ferentz a big name coach? Tressel?

Bring Back McCarney

I think it's time we just kick Chizik to the curb and bring back Dan McCarney. At least he cared about the program. He bled cardinal and gold. He at least wouldn't sell ISU short. Just my opinion!

I'm not sure about that. Both head coaching chances he got didnt work out well for him. He has strugged in the NFL as well. He also has been out of college FB for sometime and the way this is going down we need someone with good current ties that know where they can get players.

I believe he has been head coach twice. In 2007, he didn't do any recruiting and just filled in as a favor to the AD for VERY little money as a favor. They finished 6-5. His other head coaching job was 17 years ago where he fished 8-24 at Moorehead state.

I don't know if he would be a good head coach but I guarantee we'd have a strong offense.

It has really dawned on me as I have thought about this that we have not had a coach that has hired assistants that went on to bigger and better things (and hence created a "coaching tree" with some ISU roots) since the 70s when we had Majors and Bruce. Criner didn't, Walden didn't, and we had McCarney for 12 years...name some assistants under McCarney that have become hot coaching commodities?
You are correct....having great coordinators is key. Take Stoops for example...he hired an up and comer from KY as his o-coordinator (Leach) when he started at OU. This is why I was so hopeful that Chizik would be able to do the same for us with his ties to coaching in 3 BCS conferences.

First of all, I said hire the "best possible" coach...not a "big name" coach.

If you consider the Iowa boy to be McCarney...he won less than 40% of his games during his 12 year run (and the Big 12 North was pretty lame most of that time). If you consider Chizik a "big name" coach...I guess I think that assessment is wrong...he was not a big name coach...rather a hot assistant.

Ferentz is a mediocre (at best) coach. Tressel was not a "big name" but had been ultra successful for a long time at Youngstown (a traditional FCS power) prior to getting his chance at Ohio State.

Well of course you always want to hire the "best coach" but everyone has a different opinion what the "best coach" is like.

Any coach that comes in should have a lause that says if you leave within 4 years you have to pay ISU $10 million.

Re: Dan McCarney!!!!!!!!!!

It would be easy to rail on ISU every day on the radio. It would probably cement a place in Hawkeye lore for me.

But I like the vast majority of the folks in Ames, and on this site. I am not going to do it.

And like many of you, this thing is baffling to me, its arguably the biggest sports story in the state of Iowa this year, one of my jobs is to focus on sports in this state, and that's what I do.

I think bringing McCarney back would be awesome. I know some will disagree with that, and I understand their rationale.

I hope you are joking. I could maybe see bringing him back as an AD someday or something similar. Maybe. His 2005 team should have won the Big12 North easily. That was a ten win team, the only thing holding them back was coaching.

DMac coming back would be great for Iowa, no not the state, but the U of I. He was no longer going to be any threat to beat them. The fact that you even posted this makes me lose even more respect for you. Deep down, I wonder if you are one of those Iowa fans that thinks ISU shouldn't even have an athletics program, so the U of I could have even more resources and a larger fanbase. I think you look at Ohio State and Illinois and Minnesota where there is one clearly identifiable school in the state and the other ones know their place.

So if Chizik does go to Auburn and if this is a complete an accurate list, that means we might be the only BCS school open right now? I guess if you are looking for a bright spot there it is. That also means Gill was passed over by Syracuse and Auburn.
