GRAYER RETURNING TO MICHIGAN

Is this a scenario where ISU will be paying another settlement - similar to the Nick Nurse situation?
It sounds to me like Grayer is leaving on his own accord. ISU is not booting him. If that is the case then there would not be a asettlement.

Jeff was never anounced as an asst. coach, and I can see why. You already have a Head coach with no coaching experience, the last thing you need is an asst. with little or no coaching experience. It was very nice of FH to try and find a place for Grayer after GMac dumped on him. Unfortunately the position does not fit into Jeff's plans.
It is that simple isn't it? I don't get why people are saying ISU dumped on Grayer. Fred was hired and never intended on Grayer being an assistant. He was never led to believe he would be and they actually gave him a position. Grayer wants to coach so he is leaving. It isn't that hard ot figure out.

If we were Kansas, I think this situation would be an indication that we just found a stud PG but he comes with the string attached that his father or high school/AAU coach needs a job!

There are new NCAA rules in place that will keep this from happening.

I am only speculating here - like everyone else - but Fred was the ballboy for ISU basketball at or near the time that Jeff was a superstar at ISU. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Fred might have even tried to emulate some of Jeff's moves when he was a kid.

Jeff may be even more of a legend in Fred's eyes than he is to us.

I seriously doubt that Fred would "throw Jeff under the bus". I think they worked this out in a way that was best for both parties.

I haven't read much of this thread but the bolded part is exactly why you can't have an assistant with little to no coaching experience. Hoiberg is going to need experience on the bench to help him grow. He is going to need experience on the bench to help him recruit. He is going to need as much experience as possible. I will feel better about Fred if he has three experienced assistants rather than one and a half. Keep in mind that TJ didn't really have a ton of coaching experience prior to ISU.

It's been explained to him before but he doesn't get it.

I find this news disturbing. I find the timing troubling. And I find the comments in this thread comical.

No one on this site knows what transpired over the past several months behind the scenes within in the ISU MBB program for certain.

However, it certainly smacks of "using" Grayer to lure recruits during the time of the year when recruiting is the primary focus and then dumping him when we get to the time of the year when coaching becomes the primary focus.

As for some of the posts...they are absolutely hilarious in a very sad way...

...Grayer was only a "sentimental" choice for an assistant

...Grayer does not have the requisite coaching "experience"

...Grayer is not "qualified" for the job

...there are "much better possibilities" out there for this position than Grayer

and, my personal favorite

..."if Grayer wants to be a coach, I would think he'd be able to get a coaching job at a JC or mid major to get a little experience under his belt"

All of these comments are comical because they clearly could apply to the man we hired as our head coach at roughly $1 million per year...yet most of you making these comments about Grayer had no problem with the Hoiberg hire whatsoever. I always love to see people talk out of both sides of their mouths...good comic value.

Unfortunately, one of if not the best Cyclone MBB players of all time appears to have been thrown on the scrap heap. We only have a handful of truly great players that ever played at ISU and Jeff Grayer is on that list and maybe at the top of that list. He deserved better.

Seriously, what percentage of assistant coaches keep their job when they were hired by the outgoing coach? And what is the percentage of assistants who keep their job when hired by the outgoing coach and they never even coached on that schools bench for a season?

I realize Jeff has a special place in your heart, as do many of Johnny's boys. He does in mine too. But to characterize the attempt to find a place for Jeff in the program rather than "throwing him on the scrapheap" right away as "using" him, is extremely unfair. Freddy is one of Johnny's boys, too.

I expected more out of you, cyclonenum1.

Best of luck to Jeff Grayer. Sounds like a great guy and is a great Cyclone.

There might be a couple here who know what has been going on, but for the most part, you are correct. Yet, despite the fact that you probably don't know what was going on behind the scenes, you feel the need to proclaim:

Unfortunately, one of if not the best Cyclone MBB players of all time appears to have been thrown on the scrap heap.

Why do this? Do you have some inside knowledge of the circumstances and situation?

Firstly- all blame needs to be leveled at Mac for the situation.

Secondly-none of us will ever likely know what truly transpiried over the last few months. Seeing that Jeff is leaving of his own accord with a new job lined up tells me isu and the ath dept did everything they could and more to help a fellow cyclone out. He was by no means thrown to the scrap heap.

Fred will hire a guy and we'll be happy.

My guess is that there is already an AC in place but ISU won't announce it until after awhile. It would be disrespectful to Grayer to immediately announce his replacement before he even has his bags packed.

except for the fact that it wouldn't be a replacement...

Here's my question....why is this happening now? He has been on the coaching staff for three months now, maybe even a little bit more since he was originally hired by McD, and only now the limitations of his position are an issue, right at the start of the semester? I don't know, just doesn't feel right to me.

Good points - I'm confused about this as well. According to the DMR, Grayer is not returning phone calls.

Perhaps he stuck around in the administrative role hoping that he could make a case for the assistant position. When it became clear that he wouldn't be getting it (perhaps Fred has started making calls about it or is preparing to announce or he and Jeff simply had a heart to heart about it) he decided he needed to move on.

I think a lot of people are reading a lot more into this than is there.

This is simply bass ackwards...the assistant slots are for the less experienced not the head slots in nearly all cases.

Um, like you just did?
