GRAYER RETURNING TO MICHIGAN

And we are....Iowa State.

Here's my question....why is this happening now? He has been on the coaching staff for three months now, maybe even a little bit more since he was originally hired by McD, and only now the limitations of his position are an issue, right at the start of the semester? I don't know, just doesn't feel right to me.

My $.02 is that FH and JP were kind enough to give him time to find something else to replace the ISU position first. He found something and resigned. This is how you treat a person you care about.

I feel bad for Grayer. Hopefully someday he can get his break into coaching.

By the way, I always thought GMAC's decision to hire Grayer was just a desperate attempt to protect himself by putting a cyclone legend (who is pretty much beyond criticism) on his coaching staff. It was a nice chance for Grayer to get some coaching experience, but it just wasn't a fit for FH's staff.

It says in the release that he worked in the admin office and he didn't like it so he is going to go coach. Fred never told him he would be a coach offered him another job for now. Jeff tried it for a few months to see if he would like it. He didn't so now he is leaving big deal.

This.

A human shield protecting Greg from the Cyclone mob.

I feel bad for Jeff Grayer. I really do. I wish nothing but the best for him and I really really hope we as fans see him back in Ames more often. He is truly loved. Go Jeff Grayer and Go Cyclones!!!

I just don't understand this whole situation. Jeff Grayer's position was an "administrative role" so therefore we have always only had 2 assistants? So therefore hiring a 3rd assistant has been in the works the whole time and no one knew about it. Now that Grayer left we have 2 positions to fill one being the 3rd assistant that we have needed to fill the whole time, and two being grayers "administrative role" position. Can anyone tell me if i am right on or not about this whole thing?

It's my understanding that Rutter remained a recruiting assistant this summer along with TJ and Lutz. The long-term plan is for Rutter to become DBO with Matt Abdelmassih as Asst DBO. Fred will hire the new 3rd recruiting assistant here soon. I would look for the new assistant to have some ties to prime 2011 or 2012 recruiting target(s).

Some people knew about Grayer not being an assistant, and why hire a position you created just for Grayer?

i understand that we are getting a third assistant. The question i still have is if grayers "administrative role" is going to be filled by someone else?

thank you mr grayer for your recruiting help. good luck as u return to michigan.

I doubt it, Lefty Moore was hired as a student assistant and Petey is still on the staff as a grad assistant. Then you have the two DBOs in Rutter and Abdelmassih.

If we were Kansas, I think this situation would be an indication that we just found a stud PG but he comes with the string attached that his father or high school/AAU coach needs a job!

I find this news disturbing. I find the timing troubling. And I find the comments in this thread comical.

No one on this site knows what transpired over the past several months behind the scenes within in the ISU MBB program for certain.

However, it certainly smacks of "using" Grayer to lure recruits during the time of the year when recruiting is the primary focus and then dumping him when we get to the time of the year when coaching becomes the primary focus.

As for some of the posts...they are absolutely hilarious in a very sad way...

...Grayer was only a "sentimental" choice for an assistant

...Grayer does not have the requisite coaching "experience"

...Grayer is not "qualified" for the job

...there are "much better possibilities" out there for this position than Grayer

and, my personal favorite

..."if Grayer wants to be a coach, I would think he'd be able to get a coaching job at a JC or mid major to get a little experience under his belt"

All of these comments are comical because they clearly could apply to the man we hired as our head coach at roughly $1 million per year...yet most of you making these comments about Grayer had no problem with the Hoiberg hire whatsoever. I always love to see people talk out of both sides of their mouths...good comic value.

Unfortunately, one of if not the best Cyclone MBB players of all time appears to have been thrown on the scrap heap. We only have a handful of truly great players that ever played at ISU and Jeff Grayer is on that list and maybe at the top of that list. He deserved better.

I haven't read much of this thread but the bolded part is exactly why you can't have an assistant with little to no coaching experience. Hoiberg is going to need experience on the bench to help him grow. He is going to need experience on the bench to help him recruit. He is going to need as much experience as possible. I will feel better about Fred if he has three experienced assistants rather than one and a half. Keep in mind that TJ didn't really have a ton of coaching experience prior to ISU.

Until shown otherwise, I'll consider this much too-doo about nothing.

Need to do some research. I had an issue with the Hoiberg hire as soon as I heard it, but because he's also inexperienced, that's why there's no good reason to put more inexperience around him.
