Garza Vs Niang

All I’m saying is that Niang’s senior year, ISU had 5(!) other guys that made NBA rosters at some point. Cant say the same for Luka.

It's very true that ISU had some loaded rosters then, there were guys like Clyburn and Ejim who didn't make the NBA who still dominated the college game on top of the 12 or so players who played in the NBA or had a cup of coffee in that era...not all 12 played with Niang but most did (probably played with 6-7 total).

I will say though that Iowa runs its entire offense through Luka...understandably. ISU's game plan was never...get the ball to Niang. With Fizer the game plan was definitely to get Fizer the ball in the paint. Iowa has a career starter whose job is to basically never shoot the ball, nobody would have ever started for ISU in that era who couldn't and wouldn't go get their own shot and own points.

I think you can say the same thing about every fanbase in the country.
You can, but I think Iowa suffers more from it, simply due to the state not having any pro teams. ISU fans are pretty non-existent on the eastern half of the state unless they attended ISU. This is especially true in the more rural areas, where, just stating the facts, the more uneducated you are, the more likely you are to be a big Hawk fan. I have lived in NE/E Iowa my entire life, and it's just how it is. I honestly question whether some local yokels are even aware that Iowa State exists. I'm not sure what it's like in other portions of Iowa, maybe there are segments like this in our fan base too, but I just haven't seen it personally.

When I grew up Iowa had a great football, bball, and wrestling program going. ISU was terrible in football, ok in bball and pretty good in wrestling. For a lot of kids at that time, picking Iowa to be a fan of was a no brainer.

I don't disagree with that. I think Iowa was also just so much more visible. TV, radio, etc really helped too.

That's because, like it or not, Iowa historically has been the more covered and more relevant team in the state. ISU has made lots of headway in that Dept however. Hell, I know some tavern-clones in my hometown. I will say, as an Iowa Alumni, that some of the drunken idiots that haven never even stepped foot on campus piss me off.

I think that was contributed to the success Iowa was having and the success ISU didn’t have. Iowa was consistently ranked in the top 25 in all three of those sports, including playing in some high level bowls, championships, etc.

You do realize that you just called out like 2/3rds of your fanbase, right?

While stupid, they’re quite entertaining.

ISU definitely did not capitalize on some good coaches. We went a decade with Majors and Bruce and then lots and lots of crap.
McCarney hit the high schools really, really hard to finally get some attention but again that was a long gap.

Not in the 60s/70s. ISU was the better football team. Iowa’s athletic department did a better job getting broadcaster to cover games and reaching out through the radio. Iowa was also helped with ISU having very poor ADs and a prez that was anti athletic. Iowa did a better job promoting themselves and getting supporters in the right spot.

That is true. Now it looks to be the opposite today unfortunately.

Monte Morris might have been better than either one.

In several advanced statistics (win shares, offensive win shares) he leads Big 12 for career stats that are kept back to 1990.

Georges is definitely the guy who was the best at closing out a game of the three.

Monte was very very good for four years. Garza took a couple years to get get to his peak. Georges was somehow a good closer his freshman year but wasn't a full out starter level player his freshman year.
I was thinking this about Monte too. Garza definitely has all of the accolades, but if I was building a team I would pick Monte first. Point Guard in my opinion is the most important position on the floor and impacts the game the most.

In terms of who was responsible for winning the most games of that era it's Monte then Niang but kind of splitting hairs because they overlapped so much. Our fans tend to go to Georges because he was kind of the ultimate spirit animal mascot of all things Cyclone.

The thing Monte has over Georges and Garza is that even though he arrived as a skinny kid...he was a clear Big 12 level starter on day one at his position. Garza was rough his freshman year, and still improving greatly his sophomore year. Niang was not in game shape as a freshman which is part of why he'd play sparingly then close out games.

Monte was solid as a freshman worthy of starting on a ranked team that already had a great point guard and then basically three years of nearly flawless point guard play. No player has played more Big 12 minutes than Monte Morris for a reason.
