I wanted to post my impressions of the Hawkeye game yesterday and how it might effect the game next week. Original intent was to ask Clone fans to do the same but that’s not really possible now.

Kinnick - The north stands looked great. Subjective opinion was that t was louder but we will see.

Defense - Looked really good. Pitched a shutout until garbage time. Classic bend but don’t break. They gave up some rushing yards but replaced Amani Jones with Hockaday and it really shored things up. Pass defense was really good but....

Oh my goodness was the NIU quarterback awful. Slow at making decisions. Held the ball. Then he wasn’t very accurate. Their running backs were pretty decent and the offensive line was very good, but the QB was ungood.

Offense - Stanley didn’t look good. Or at least looked average. He hit Hockenson on some really nice throws and made a beautiful deep throw that Fant flat dropped. The running game was inconsistent in the first half, rock star good in the second half. The backup tackles were fine. The all whatever defensive end was for the most part neutralized. All three RBs looked good. Iowa basically abandoned the pass in the second half as they could run at will.

ST - mixed bag mostly positive. Had a punt blocked as a player flat missed an assignment. But, punting was much improved. Return game was much improved. Especially punt return. Groeneweg (sp) looks like Andy Brodell.

For next week, I think Iowa’s going to be able to run the ball. They need to work out the passing game, but we’ve been saying that for like five years. The potential is there. Early in the game, it seemed like NIU made an effort to take away Fant but Hockaday was beating them up a little. I think that’s something that you’ll see this Saturday. ISM looked pretty good. Brandon Smith not so much.

Edit to add - Penalties. Iowa had three holding calls and a chop black. Pretty atypical for them. Ferentz seemed to attribute them to an officiating interpretation. I don’t know but it killed a number of drives.

This is why I never believe what Iowa fans say and who they hype up before the season. Jones went from stud to "things were fine once we replaced him" lol

Stanley was bad against a MAC team and Fant dropped a pass? No way!

This is going to be a long, boring week if all we get to hear about is ToE fans talk about their game while ISU fans have basically nothing to discuss.

RIP DeShaunte Jones 50+ yard TD, gone but not forgotten. That's all we got.

Better have a good offense because we are scoring an average of 14 touchdowns a game.

Really? H

Because certainly ISU fans never hype a player who turns out to be a dud.

Not exactly all we got. Kempt fired a ball to I believe it was Hakeem Butler for a first down on that drive. It made me comment that the coaching staff must have equipped Kempt with a rocket launcher in the offseason because I've never seen Kempt throw a ball like that before.

I actually noticed that myself, he rocketed that ball into a pretty good spot through zone D. Execution was excellent, plus the added bonus of the cannon arm.

Let the speculation of newly-discovered cannon arm vs. "one good throw" begin!

When I saw where he was going to throw it looked like a mess of blue players and held my breath. Wish there was a replay. My memory might have been tainted. Can't decide if it was an ill advise throw but HB made a great snag or it was perfectly timed and perfectly accurate.

It was not an ill-advised throw; it was a throw that a QB at this level has to be able to make to make defenses pay for playing zone coverage. It's just that too often ISU hasn't had a QB since Rosenfels and Wallace capable of making that throw.

You're upset the players you hyped up sucked in week 1 and your TEs can't block. Don't take that out on me

The tight ends blocked just fine. Especially in he 2nd half. NIUs all world defensive end was knocked on his butt twice by Fant. Hockenson is a better tight end than anyone you’ve had on the ISU team since I’ve been alive, and he’s the 2nd best receiving tight end on the team. Link to me hyping players? Iowa defensive line was fine, to the point of great. The linebackers played very well in the 2nd half. The defensive backs were fine including a true freshman.

Offensively the tackles played well for 2nd and third stringers. Stanley was simply average. His stats were hurt because Iowa didn’t need to throw in the 2nd half. You go be you though.

Looked to me like a well-thrown ball into a zone hole when I saw it live, but you're right -- hard to judge for sure without a replay.

Lazard drops passes, and Hawk fans think he's a bum. Fant also is known for dropping passes, and Hawk fans believe he's the best TE ever.

Obviously Fant is really good because the national media all pretty much agrees on that, it's just funny how he never gets criticized all that much for his drops while other players do.

I'm going to take the Twitter accounts word over yours. Sorry

What does Stanley's 47% completion percentage have to do with Iowa not needing to throw in the second half

I don't know about that.
