Ferentz new deal

I hate to say this but Ferentz has done a top notch job at Iowa. Just like McCarney did a top notch at ISU. Both these guys did more with much less. More impressive than any NC at those top notch programs.

McCarney started with nothing and made ISU better.

Fry started with nothing and made Iowa better.

Ferentz started with a program built by Hayden Fry and made it worse:

Overall Iowa Record:
Fry: 143-89-6 .613
Ferentz: 70-53 .569

Big 10 Record:
Fry: 98-61-5 .613
Ferentz: 43-37 .538

By your logic, Hayden Fry did a top notch job at Iowa (which I agree with), but not Ferentz.

Of course those stats don't look the same, you are comparing 20 years for Fry to 10 years for Ferentz. How about these:

Hayden Fry's first 10 years at Iowa:
77-40-4 overall
54-24-4 Big Ten (played 9 conference games 2 years while he was coach)
1 Top 10 finish
6 Top 20 finishes
2 Big Ten Championships
8 Bowl games

Kirk Ferentz first 10 years at Iowa:
70-53 overall
43-37 Big Ten
3 Top 10 finishes
4 Top 20 finishes
2 Big Ten Championships
7 Bowl games

So if you agree Fry did a top notch job then with these stats being as close as they are you can't really agrue that KF isn't doing a top notch job can you?

Ferentz hasn't been successful at Iowa??? C'mon. Seriously?? no, seriously??? Doesn't matter who you are a fan of, Ferentz has done one heck of a job. I'm a lil jealous that they got a fine coach (long term one) and a good person.

If you aren't ripping your "own"...you rip on Iowa...

Never try to use logic with Monty, it'll just get spun back into whatever facts Monty is using to make his argument. Best to just ignore him.

Oh boy, you're in for it now...

I know but if you haven't noticed, once you use the correct sampling size or compare facts to similar time frames and it proves he has no idea what he is talking about then he disappears and everyone is happy.

I'm still waiting for him to tell me how KF has made the program worse when he thinks Fry did a top notch job and KF has almost identical numbers as Fry through the first 10 years. But I'm sure I won't get an answer from him.

LOL, why?? What has he personally done that is immoral or illegal?? No criminal record, donates to the community, approchable, good father, and simply a nice guy.

You can spin anything else if you want but all it will be is a spin.

Monty reminds me of a guy on an old MB once...used to argue just to argue with his circular logic, we all decided one day that the only response we'd give the guy was "shut the hell up, rube". It caught on like wildfire and I think the guy ended up leaving the board.

If everyone does it, that sounds like a great idea. But it was your idea, and I think I have too much pride to use it.

I've had Monty on ignore for several months now. Every once in a while I take him/her off just to see the drivel, but then he/she is right back.

It's not my idea...I just referenced something that happened. I wasn't even advocating it...just said he reminds me of that guy.

Oh I couldn't agree with you more. Other folks around here seem to think he's Lucifer incarnate. Of course, that has more (read: everything) to do with the logo on his shirt than it does with him (anyone claiming they wouldn't want him as the coach at ISU is COMPLETELY full of crap), but that's pretty obvious.

Them's fightin words!!!

"Almost identical" = not as good. And that's with KF having 12 game schedules that include an extra game every year against a team like Maine, UNI, Montana State, or Western Michigan -- a 12th game against a creampuff that Fry rarely had.

To sum up the comparison:

Fry took over a bad program and made it significantly better.

McCarney took over a bad program and made it significantly better.

Ferentz took over a good program (built by Fry) and did not make it significantly better. He made it slightly worse.

not true Monty. When Ferentz took over the program, they were one of the worst in the nation. He went from 0-8 in conference play in year 1 to 8-0 in year 4.

Why Ferentz took over, Iowa had been to 3 bowl games in the previous 4 seasons and had winning records in 5 of the previous 6 seasons. That is not the definition of a bad program.

When Fry took over, Iowa had not been to a bowl game since 1959 and was working on a streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons. That is a bad program. Learn your history before you post in the future.

The last line is pretty funny---from Cityview:

It turns out that that $3.02 million Kirk Ferentz is getting annually — and the 35 hours of jet time — is just part of his deal to coach football at the University of Iowa. If Iowa finishes in the top 25 football teams, he gets another $100,000 — and the figure goes up the higher the team finishes. He gets $175,000 if he’s undefeated in the Big 10 or wins the conference title, and he gets $100,000 if he shares the title. He gets anywhere from $25,000 to $175,000 for going to a bowl game — it depends on the bowl — and $25,000 if he’s Big Ten Coach of the Year. Throw in another $50,000 if he’s National Coach of the Year or if he wins any of 15 or more coaching awards. Finally, he gets $75,000 if the annual graduation rate of his players is over 70 percent. He and his wife each get a car (with insurance), too, and, of course, lots of football tickets for their friends. Still, it can be tough to make ends meet on this — Iowa City can be an expensive place to live — so the university “will make a good faith effort to negotiate a reduced-rate membership at University Athletic Club for head coach, coaching staff, and families.”

The dues at the University Athletic Club are $84 a month. ...

I honestly can't believe people are so dim-witted that there are those that actually believe it's a struggle to make it in society with a multi-million dollar salary. Then again, certain pro athletes (particularly some NBA players) and now apparently idiotic journalists obviously prove otherwise...
