Ferentz new deal

not bad we got 35 posts here before it totally went AWOL.

I just think that if the Big 12 north and Iowa start beating people on the national team, it will bring the region "up"

I have an honest question for Hawk fans:

Why sit idle with Ferentz, are you ok with being 2nd fiddle in the Big Ten and mostly going to non-BCS bowls?

From the article:

Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State are the only teams in the league to have a winning record against Big Ten opponents during the past 30 years.

I'm ok with playing second fiddle to elite programs like OSU and UM, with the occasional Big 10 championship and BCS bowl.

I would think as a fan base, you'd start to want more after 10 years....beating THE Ohio State and going to play a BCS bowl? Or is being an 8-9 win team the best that can be expected?

Please don't fly off the handle, honest question.

We did beat the Ohio State in 2004. Only one win, but Ferentz has defeated every team in the Big 10 at least twice with the exception of OSU.

Beat Michigan this year, and Iowa will be 3-3 over the last 6 against them. If there was ever a year for Iowa to put a 2002 type beating on Michigan, this is that year.

Chizik may not be a good game day coach, but how many players of his were arrested during his time at ISU?
You are taking one blemish and trying to cast a pretty big shadow with it, sir. It's not always easy to tell how a kid will react once they go to college. Not to mention, the guy has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars back to the hospital in Iowa City.

I'd say that's an extremely fair question. Some days, I wonder that myself, to be truthful, but as others have said, there aren't many, if any, coaches out there that understand what it takes to constantly be a winner at Iowa. Not to mention being a perennial powerhouse, I just don't think is possible at Iowa. You can point your finger at Nebraska earlier this decade and in the 90's, but that is likely to never happen again, with the change in scholarship rules and having to play the Texas schools every year, instead of Oklahoma, one okay school, and a bunch of patsies on your way to a 9+ win season.

How many times have your coaches been given a restraining order from their wives for domestic abuse?

I think this was an unnecessary shot at McCarney. Lest you forget that he was on the Iowa staff at one point too.

That's great-- now Iowa City can go ahead and build that new jail. They'll be sure to get plenty of use out of it!

Just like ISU can go ahead and add onto their football trophy case, they'll lower Iowa's unemployment rate by 1, as they'll need to hire someone to clean all the dust out of it!

See how easy that was? The act you are trying to pull brings "beating a dead horse" to a whole new level.

To round this out, I'm fairly happy with where things are headed. Iowa had a successful season last year, should be set up to be fairly successful this year, and is on the brink of a very successful recruiting class. A class that appears to be a group of very solid kids, instead of prima donnas that littered the 05 class. Some of them could very well turn into one, but from everything I've read in the premium info, they appear to be good kids.

My point was that we all liked McCarney, and we have forgiven him because his wife had forgiven him. No one is perfect and he's overall a great guy and a superb coach....But for people to paint Kirk Ferentz as this immoral bastardofaman is out of line too.

Long term deals like this are usually good for other teams. It removes all the incentive to work real hard. If I'm Ferenz, $3 mill a year, talk the walk, and laugh all the way to the bank and retirement.

He's done a decent job. Just not sure he's earned this, but I don't mind it.

Judging by the history of Iowa's 120 year program, he's done a FANTASTIC job. People used to watch Iowa football on tv and there would be a laugh track on every play. Now there's only a laugh track like once or twice a year, including to you guys every other year. Buuuut I digress....

Continuity is a good thing.

Is he overpaid? Absolutely. Do I care? Not really. Not my money. I usually watch games at a bar. Donors and boosters care, but at the same time, realize how hard it is to win at Iowa. He's THEIR guy..'In Kirk We Trust' and all that bs...But if he loses 20 games or so or more in the next 3 years, Im sure his seat will get hot

His incentive to work hard? ok. Umm let's see...I don't know... All-access to the best gentlemens clubs this side of the South Skunk? Ballin wit all da Dee-Troit playaz in da private jet?

No but seriously, there's an upside to Iowa right now. The aging semi-hot chick has lost weight and got a boob job. It's time to strut her stuff all the way to Pasadena:wink:

PS, I have literally seen Ferentz laugh at least part of the way to the bank. His mug gleams a platinum grille with spinnaZ on da Escalade

I think old Raisin face Hayden Fry was the one who did a fantastic job. Ferenz other then a couple really good years has been average, but certainly not deserving to be paid like a top 10 coach.

But hey it's Iowa's money to blow. The extra they're paying him and to fund all the other non revenue gain sports at Iowa eats up most of the revenue those extra seats at Kinnick generate relative to Jack Trice.

Other than the first paragraph, I got a good laugh out of your comments. Ferenz knows he's got a good thing going. Why go to the NFL and face all that pressure when you can produce average to sligtly above average teams at Iowa and get paid like a king.

That's downright hilarious, especially coming from an ISU fan.

Well I don't really expect anything else from you.....

It's not like they've been reguarly cracking the top 10. Barely top 20 most years when it's said and done.

Compare that with the Hayden years, when they were legitimately a top 10 team.

Wow you totally pwn3d us there...No wonder creative arts are scarce in Ames. Call us when you need a doctor or lawyer. I'll call you if I need my dog neutered or a pizza delivered.

Hey SH and DJK15, are you going to let this guy talk **** about your school!?!

Creative arts are scarce in Ames? Is this true DJK15?

Hayden Fry's first 10 years at Iowa:
77-40-4 overall
54-24-4 Big Ten (played 9 conference games 2 years while he was coach)
1 Top 10 finish
6 Top 20 finishes
2 Big Ten Championships
8 Bowl games

Kirk Ferentz first 10 years at Iowa:
70-53 overall
43-37 Big Ten
3 Top 10 finishes
4 Top 20 finishes
2 Big Ten Championships
7 Bowl games

While Hayden had a better conference record there isn't a whole lot of difference in the rest.

Just so we're clear... you consider this average:

Kirk Ferentz first 10 years at Iowa:
70-53 overall
43-37 Big Ten
3 Top 10 finishes
4 Top 20 finishes
2 Big Ten Championships
7 Bowl games

If you're comparing creative arts in Iowa City to Ames, it's not even close. IC is one of the most artistic cities in Iowa. In Ames, once you step out of the Design Building, the creative arts are pretty much non-existent.

Yeah but you're missing the fact that Hayden took over a team that had losing seasons forever. Also that there were far fewer bowl games to be had most of his tenure. 3 top 10 finishes is a big difference. He had a team in the mid 80's that was rated top 5 most of the year(and they absolutely got shelled at the Rose Bowl that year).

I think the only thing Kirk has maybe done better than Hayden is win bowl games. Fry had a knack for losing them.

The only thing Kirk has done better than Hayden is win bowl games? Can you find me a link to a site that shows Hayden had a string of 3 straight Top 10 finishes?

Wait, so you think Kirk has been a more successful coach than Hayden Fry? Excellent.

Fry took a team that had 17 straight losing seasons, and after two more strung off a string of successful seasons that Iowa had never seen before.
