Ferentz new deal

How, exactly? It's basically guaranteeing that he'll be there at least until his youngest son is through high school, and probably retirement beyond that.

Kirk's youngest will begin his sophomore year at City High in August. It matters not to me - maybe you meant college instead of HS....

I have an honest question for Hawk fans:

Why sit idle with Ferentz, are you ok with being 2nd fiddle in the Big Ten and mostly going to non-BCS bowls?

I would think as a fan base, you'd start to want more after 10 years....beating THE Ohio State and going to play a BCS bowl? Or is being an 8-9 win team the best that can be expected?

Please don't fly off the handle, honest question.

Iowa isn't Ohio State, and never will be. They're also not 2nd fiddle in the Big 10; in a typical year they're a middle of the pack, 7-8 win team.

A better comparison for Iowa would be Wisconsin. They run the same type of offense, Barry A coached for Hayden, Bielema played for Hayden, etc... Before Alvarez took over, Wisconsin was going through a period similar to what Iowa experienced in the '60s and '70s - he was their Hayden Fry.

so yes, as a fan base, 7-8 wins is ok year in and out. What about a National Championship? Or am I kidding myself?

Are we saying it's impossible?

Not impossible, but extremely difficult to do at Iowa. They'll have their best chance in a long time in 2010 if a couple key guys don't jump to the NFL early.

And I'm sure I'll get destroyed for saying so, but it would not be a bad thing for ISU if Iowa goes on to win the BCS and beat some folks in the SEC/ACC.

Right now I think ISU needs the midwest to return to football power, including Nebraska and Iowa, to start pulling more recruits north

What about it? It certainly isn't on my radar, or any Iowa fans radar as far as I can tell. ISU fans might say that Iowa fans think the Hawks can win the whole thing, but the reality of how we look at something like that is much different.

That being said, nothing is impossible, but it would take everything going Iowa's way for them to play for the title. Ohio State isn't going away...ever, it seems, and I can't imagine that Michigan will stay down for long.

Well, Iowa's already 3-1 against the SEC over the past few years.

Not to mention the schedule turning in Iowa's favor. Hopefully I'll be a first time Iowa season ticket holder next season. North end zone, baby - best seats in the house.

I own a hawkeye shirt for just such an occasion...I hate Florida and most of the southeast schools.

You guys have been a 7-8 win team for so long (barring the last year of Fry and early Ferentz years), I guess I would get greedy and want a win over OSU and the others.

Iowa pays him the money he's being paid because, unlike your last coach, he knows what it takes to win in a state like Iowa. And he has a track record of putting overlooked guys in the NFL. And he graduates his players, unless they're in jail. And he's won conference championships. And he's recruiting better than he ever has (save me the 2005 class. soft suburban kids dont=tough team). And irrespective of your guys' opinions of him, he is highly thought of in the coaching circle. And it keeps NFL guys from 1-upping Iowa's offer.

And it's all privately funded because our athletic dept (football) makes truckloads of money, so they're able to.

Look, I'd like for him to beat OSU's hineys every year, but it isn't realistic. Iowa HAS beaten OSU and HAS been to a BCS bowl already. On top of that, Iowa has a chance to beat OSU late this year at the Shoe because OSU has to go to Happy Valley the week before and has to go to Ann Arbor the week after. We'll beat OSU and Michigan on a regular basis once Iowa's population grows 2x. Hypothetically, we could hire Nick Saban but he wouldn't have a clue how to win at Iowa. Tressell, maybe. But it goes without saying those guys aren't considering Iowa in any part of their mind.

Kirk Ferentz is the best Iowa can do.

That's great-- now Iowa City can go ahead and build that new jail. They'll be sure to get plenty of use out of it!

Wow you totally pwn3d us there...No wonder creative arts are scarce in Ames. Call us when you need a doctor or lawyer. I'll call you if I need my dog neutered or a pizza delivered.
