Expectations for 2018-2019

Matt Thomas had a rough first two seasons after being billed as a crack shooter coming into school. Then he turned into the Platonic ideal of a 3&D wing.

Granted, even Matt struggling early was a better player than Lewis so far. Freshman Matt Thomas would have started most of last season with ease.

I’m not sure I understand what’s fully going on with this team I guess.

People still believe Lewis 3P% was accurate? I'm not writing him or anything, but some boxscores listed 4 makes on 0 attempts.
That's the kind of shooting that I want this team to have !! Heck, back in the day I would go 5 for 0 all the time.

I think our eventual starting lineup and rotation will be...

Weiler-Babb
Wigginton
Shayok
Jacobson / Horton-Tucker
Lard
---
Haliburton
Talley
Young

I know that is nine men, but there is just room enough for them.

I really cannot decide who starts of Mike or Talen.

200 / 9 = 22.2 minutes each, on average

I think there is room for regular 9 man rotation, and even room for 10, 11 and 12 to get in there situationally.

Coaching from my couch here, but I'd love to see them go balls to the wall running the court and pressing (not constantly, but some) and playing aggressive defense. We have solid guys who can come in for spot minutes if there's foul trouble or tired legs.

He's been rushing his shots. Seems like a similar spot to last year where his minutes are a bit scattered, and I think he feels the pressure to make his mark as fast as he can. I think he'd be better served trying to do that by playing as hard as he can in defense/rebounding, and diving for 50/50 balls, but I also get that not all young players see that.

He is not going to get many more chances this season, though. Haliburton and Horton-Tucker are already ahead of him, and that is before we get Talley back.

Call me crazy but I don't think Talley will play that big of a role for this team once the team is at full strength.

You're crazy.

Seriously though, I think Talley will get minutes because he can be played anywhere from 1-4 depending on where we need him. His main drawback last year was his lack of an outside shot, but we have so much more versatility this year, and he fits right in with the way we're rotating and driving the lane to break down the defense.

I do not know if the notion is crazy.

His minutes would need to come out of...

NWB
Shayok
Horton-Tucker
Haliburton

+ Wigginton once healthy and back

The first two might see their minutes backed off slightly, but their spots in the rotation are obviously secure. They will give way a little when Lindell comes back, too.

THT and Haliburton are already really good. Which ones does he replace?

Talley shot 28% from 3PT last season. Limited sample sizes so far, but Haliburton is 4/10 and THT is 7/19. They are likely both better shooters than him.

I think those two freshmen might not look back.

Call me the Last Lewis Defender, but I still believe this kid can be one of the biggest "difference makers" this year.
I agree he's been painfully rushing his shot, and that he radiates a lack of confidence at this point. He certainly has that "what am I doing here again?" vibe to him, but I think a lot of that is understandable pressure from being on a roster that's much deeper than last year.
I think if he can somehow escape from his own head a bit, not only will be become that lights out shooter he was recruited to be, but also that he has the frame and athleticism to eventually become more than an adequate defender.

I think his minutes will come in the 3 or 4 slot.

Once everyone is back lets assume that
Wigginton
Shayok
Weiler Babb
Jacobson
Lard are the starters
Then you have THT and Young making a top 7 with the remaining minutes from probably Haliburton and Talley but I like Haliburton better, granted it has only been 3 games. He will get some minutes I just don't think he will get many.

Solo, Lard, and Jacobson will take up 1.5 slots at the 4-5.

What does Talley offer as a small-ball 4 not offered by guys who are just as tall/long with Nick and Shayok who are also better scorers, shooters, and just as versatile?

I like Talley, but I think he might be one of those jack of all trades and master of none sorts of guys. On a deeper roster, not sure he fits anywhere in particular.

If he ties with Haliburton to be the eighth man in the rotation, then the tie goes to the young guy.

Basically, if everyone’s healthy and eligible, minutes for Griffin, Conditt, and Lewis are going to be few and far between.

Lewis has an opportunity to earn minutes if he is making 3's consistently and playing defense. That is one area that most still have a question about with the current top 7, especially once Solomon and Young are back. THT can but is streaky, Haliburton has hit a couple and could take that particular role but ideally Lewis would be that player. That should fit his skill set perfectly.
The issue is 3 games in Terrence hasn't shown that he can be the dead eye 3 point threat to spread the court while being lackluster on Def and if he prove himself there in December he may not get a chance this year. Pressure is on and I hope he can show the skill that make him a highly sought after player. The good thing is there is still time.

He will fit in there somewhere, due to that versatility. If I had to guess, 15 to 20 minutes a game.

I really think given Nick's recurring injury history Prohm would be limiting his minutes if he didn't have a short bench right now. It is an injury that is aggravated by overuse. When everyone is back I expect Nick to not be over 30 min per game and probably lower.

Yeah, I can't wait until Nick only has to go about 28-30 minutes. We'd obviously love to have him going 40 every night because he's a fantastic (and underrated) player, but clearly that isn't a good idea.
