Expectations for 2018-2019

Solo, Lard, and Jacobson will take up 1.5 slots at the 4-5.

What does Talley offer as a small-ball 4 not offered by guys who are just as tall/long with Nick and Shayok who are also better scorers, shooters, and just as versatile?

I like Talley, but I think he might be one of those jack of all trades and master of none sorts of guys. On a deeper roster, not sure he fits anywhere in particular.

If he ties with Haliburton to be the eighth man in the rotation, then the tie goes to the young guy.
Tally is a better small ball four than Babb, and different than Shayok. Not everyone can have the usage of Shayok, Wigginton, or THT. He’ll get minutes

That one stung. That was a big swing game on our schedule.

From what I've seen so far this year from our depleted roster, I'd be willing to put a good chunk of change right now that ISU finishes better than 9-9 in conference once we are at full strength. Not a ton better, but better. I certainly feel like 10-8 or 11-7 have high probabilities of being the final conference record right now.

Yeah, I am in the same boat. Last night was really frustrating considering we had something like a 90% win expectation at one point, and Arizona won by playing really dirty on defense and chucking bad shots that somehow kept going in.

If only Marial finished on the breakaway or we actually hit another three or two. :(

That being said, Marial, Nick, Talen, and Michael are really good. We did not get much from our bench or the other three freshmen last night. That is okay -- they will grow and learn. I wanted one of Lewis' threes to rattle in soooooooooo badly.

We replace them and put more fresh legs on the court, and I think we win without issue. I love TH and think he will have a good career for us, but there is no way we do not have more productivity out of his position from Lindell last night if healthy.

We have just a little bit more, and we win.

Tyrese as a starter is alright. Tyrese as a 7th or 8th man and... Yeah, that will be nice.

Once we have it all back, I figure we do well in the conference. Some ups and downs in the non-conference might hurt our seeding but will not keep us out.

Or so I hope. :)

That's a combination of both the computer rankings of results as well as projecting how good the team will be. Fortunately, the computer has no idea that there are 4 potential players that could be added when it projects the rest of the season.

I am actually unsure how KenPom, Barttovik, and the like deal with this.

I do not know if they code in some anticipated return date, just assume said players are always available, or if they have them out essentially permanently.

That would be a good thing to know about these projections.

Tyrese plays really solid. Not terribly aggressive just yet, which is understandable. At full strength, I'm guessing 7th or 8th man (which is a great thing).

Edit to add- I love his leadership skills already. He's always talking on the floor. He's going to be very, very good.

Yeah, he is already the one circling the wagons like Naz used to do. He was the one pushing Jacobson away ref after he got molested on that bogus moving screen.

Show me on the doll where the bad man touched you.

I'm 99% sure KenPom current year rankings is only based on team offensive and defensive metrics and has no idea about individual player factors like injuries or suspensions. I think that's the case for most rankings, I know ESPN's BPI made it a point that they include injuries but that's the only one I know of.

At this point of the year, many rankings includes preseason predictions which does include returning players, transfers, and recruiting rankings. So I think the preseason prediction probably included the ISU guys who are out. The weight of preseason predictions will continue to decrease with each game played.

There is at least one service that builds up a team offensive and defensive rating from the same for the actual players on your roster. See here...

http://www.barttorvik.com/#

He takes the known roster (including transfers in, such as Shayok and Jacobson), does some projection towards your players' improvement from year-to-year based on position, past stats, recruiting rankings, conference, and a few other things, and then brings in your high school and JUCO players and does the same thing based on rankings.

"What can you reasonably expect from the #30 PG in the country?" and the like.

A service like that might know that we have four of our better players out right now and adjust their projections to account for their current absence and eventual return.

I'm going to keep repeating and waiting for it to happen. He needs to go for the score with his floater or strong to the hoop when he drives. He kept looking to pass last night when it looked like the path to the basket was fairly clear, especially with his length.

Kind of like Monte in year 1 and 2 to an extent. He knows that there are more explosive offensive options on the floor, and he tries to facilitate that. But I agree, he needs to take it when it's there, as that will open up the floor for the other guys too.

Good comparison, although I think TH is more of a scoring threat. He's not one to take over a game (or is he?) but if starts to assert himself, that's one more thing for the opponent to have to worry about.

So far just really impressed with his demeanor outside of results. Game looked a little fast for him last night to start but overall he belongs on the floor.

Oh, definitely. Only guy to go the full 40 minutes, with 5 assists and 1 turnover. Talen only had 1 as well. Our veterans had 4, 4 and 3 (Shayok, Babb and Jacobson). Strangely enough, out of 14 turnovers, our four freshmen combined for 2 and our four upperclassmen combined for 12. Probably because our seniors are bearing the brunt of the load, but still somewhat odd.

Right, that seems similar to the preseason ranking KenPom does. And I know they have pages to look at player stats too. But I haven't seen anything to suggest T-Rank from barttorvik or KenPom rankings or others include player availability in their team rankings or projections.

@Cyclonepride

It looks like we recovered most of our lost expectation towards an NCAA tournament bid from the Arizona game with our win over UIUC yesterday.

I would think for three reasons: (1.) basically adds 0.5 wins to our win expectations for the season by winning a 50ish-50ish game like that, (2.) won big, which helps our computer rankings going forward, and (3.) Arizona played well against Gonzaga, at least until the end, which improves the quality of that loss going forward. I like our chances more now.
