Expectations for 2018-2019

Part of it will be solved by having more threats around him, and other guys that can break down the defense, plus NWB to take the reins much of the time.
And Talley. He’s very effective in getting to the paint and could really set up Wigginton to attack off kickout passes. If we don’t sign anyone else, let those guys do the passing.

But it’s in the execution. How can we use NWB and Talley to free up Wigginton to be more efficient, but also satisfy that Wigginton needs the ball to be effective?

Wigginton has a usage of 29%, which is higher than any recent Cyclone, but consistent with how Prohm has used Cannan and Payne. Shayok and THT are also guys that need volume.

It’s good to remember that in 2013-14 we shot 31% on 3Ps in conference play- with two freshman, two sophomores (one that played 17 minutes as a freshmam), a juco, and a grad transfer previously known for being inefficient. I hope we see more of spreading out the floor out with Talay at the four or five and make the game a track meet.

I agree with that. I still think team composition interferes a bit with how we'd like to play, specifically at the 4. I want to see Lard with 25 hard charging minutes at the 5, with Young taking the other 15 there and 10 at the 4 (unless we are matching up against a team with a big inside scoring threat at that position). That gives us 3/4 of the game with Talley, THT or maybe Griffin at the 4.

Starters in Nov.
NWB, LW, Shayok, Young, Lard
THT breaks into the starting 5 at some point replacing Young or NWB.

I wonder if we will be better at outside shooting. It may be a wash but things can change from now till November. Lewis made big strides the last 4 games.
I will repeat myself, since we all like our own opinions:
Barring unforeseen happenings
Starters
NWB
Wigg
Shyok
Solo
Lard
Very significant minutes
Tally
THT
Jacobson
Spot minutes - Lewis (3 pt specialist?)
Matchups can always tweak the distribution of minutes.

Wigg is a very special talent. Lottery pick might be a stretch. Still a long way from being a good point guard. Improvement must come in ball handling and passing. His personal offensive skill set is there already, decent defender and rebounder.

Effective next year the torch is 100 passed.
I hope CSP can /has transferred the work ethic and belief in winning that we had. Still worried a little bit about leadership - where is our Naz? I liked that Wigg spoke up about players not buying in.

Big Dance and top half of the Big 12 is the expectation for me. I also expect the first 10 games to be all over the place...again. Prohm seems like he throws spaghetti at the wall early in the season to come up with the right rotations...don't see that changing given the influx of 6 players into the lineup. Hopefully he will get that cleaned up prior to the conference starting. The case for optimism is I can't recall an ISU lineup that will be filled with as much talent as the one next year.

Excellent point. He did that this year too (as much as he could), but toward the end, it was obviously a "this is who we've got" thing, so it really didn't come together.

Regarding leadership, I think because NWB, Jackson, and Young are all lead-by-example type guys, Wigginton respected their seniority, maybe a little too much. It wasn't until NWB and Young went down, and Jackson maybe receded into himself a small amount that Wigginton really ascended as a leader. I can't help but think, with Jackson departing, and Wigg being a year older, that he'll be given every opportunity to become more vocal as a leader. You just can't expect a freshman, no matter how talented, to step in and talk over a senior.

I have read all these posts and others. I still come up with some basic stuff. This team looks like it never practice, They haven't gotten any better all year. Take last night 19 turnovers. Poor passing, hands of stone and can't make free throws, You watch them play and other teams do pick and rolls and get the ball inside and normally score. If we don't shoot the first 10-15 seconds we turn the ball over. I thought Lard would be better than McKay. But, he has even bigger head problems. Several more head cases on this team. Defense is just something to talk about. We couldn't guard anyone if our life depended on it. I don't know how many times the other team has wide open threes. Every one of our threes are somewhat guarded. We have troubles just passing the ball around the outside without it getting batted away. Or is this the problem of having small guards. Talley does the best job of moving the ball and driving for a man his size. Our starting guards seem to fall down or lose the ball when they try dribbling around to get a shot. If you are small you better be able to move with the ball and dribble. I see where we offered another guard that is 6' 1". Give me guards that are 6'3" or bigger. I know Wigg can jump but so can a lot of players. Even Lazarrd had a 38 inch vertical. Bottom line this team lacks basic skills, can't run offensive plays or play defense. Not a whole lot that they do well for 40 minutes. Sure we have had a lot of injuries. But, basic knowledge or basketball IQ isn't there for most. Brase seemed to have the most IQ. When he was in there things seemed to be a little more calm or under control. Too bad he was hurt before he got here. Put Brase head on Lard and you would have something.

You thought Lard as a freshman would be better than McKay? Credit to you, you were correct.

A couple legitimate concerns, but it can, and should, get better.

4 of the 1st 6 games are going to be tough next year. Open against Mizzou, then should schedule 2 cupcakes the next week before Maui. Have a chance to prove ourselves early and gain confidence.

I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see it next year. The same team that came in dfl by 4 games is all the sudden, with the same players, going to be in the top half? Optimisticly we finish 7 and get in the dance. I hope I’m wrong but I just can’t fathom this team contending for a conference title or finishing in the top 3 like some of you.

Not the same team, not the same players. Not even close. We'll be better at every position, with more depth and much, much more experience than we had this year.

I stopped reading right here.

We finished last because we only had 6-7 players available for half the season.

So you think a former player battling for his life in the NBA is going to come back and spend the summer working with Wigginton? LOL

So I take it you didn't listen to Prohm's interview after the game on the radio where he specifically said that Monte and Georges will be coming in this summer to help. And they were in contact with him this week before the game. I would tend to believe that. So I don't see what is funny here.

If NWB comes back fully healthy. He should be the primary ball handler (3/1 assist to turnover). Even Talley is really strong with the ball in his hands. Look at the West Virginia game where he knifed straight through their press. I really liked our offense when Niang brought the ball up the court in the half court system. Not many forwards can guard a player like Talley in the open court, and smaller players who can gaurd him in the open court can't keep him out of the painted area (last nights game is a great example). In my crystal ball, Wiggs could be the #3 option as ball handler because after all. He finished the year with more turnovers than assists... For reference, Matt Thomas and Naz finished their freshman seasons with ratios at or better than 2 to 1.

Reasons for optimism - 13 of the 17 turnovers last night were committed by freshman. You would hope that gets better by next season.

Next season I'd love to see NWB and Shayok really battle on the defensive end with their length. We have really nice guards (LW, THT, and Lewis) that can come in and give them a break if they focus more energy on defense. We also should really let Lard get out and run next year. Having Jacobson be able to give him a rest should only help benefit Lard's aggressive style. The 2016-2017 team finished the year 42nd in defense on KenPom, so I know Prohm can teach a little defense.

Im kind of thinking this also. We were a whole 4 games behind the next worse team in the conference, lost 7 games in Hilton, and werent even competitive in any road game since early January. Those arent exactly promising results to assume we will be great next year. Some of that you can attribute to injuries but we did beat West Virginia without Babb and we were getting beatdown on the road before Babb and Young went down.

Realistically I'm hoping for a 7th-5th place conference finish and maybe a 9 seed in the dance next year. I think anything less than that and Prohm isnt the guy to get this thing done.

I went back and did a little research because I was disgusted with the horrendous passing and turnovers last night......

From the 7:17 mark when we were up by 8 until Prohm decided to call timeout with 19:01 left we had 10 turnovers!!!! Thats completely unacceptable for a team playing in March. Clean stuff like that up and we could have easily won that game.

We add Shayok & Jacobsen. Hopefully NWB is healthy. Solomon Young is extremely under appreciated for what he means to the team (we're just better when he plays and that's been proven the last 2 seasons). He was missed the last 3 weeks. Lard & Wigginton have experience now. Talley was out for 2 months. We get a Top 40 player in THT and the Wisconsin Player of the Year. It's easy to see why people expect to see a different team next year.
