While Mr. Otter is joking sarcastically, there is some truth to what he posted. The coaching staff's of the programs below the top tier have to prove themselves to the ratings services to a degree. If they are new & unproven, those 'under the radar' recruits from more 'rural' areas will be given a 2 star rating versus a 3 star rating. If the staff has some longevity & a proven track record at recruiting, then i think more of these types of recruits receive the 3 star rating over the 2 star rating.
Think 4 star & obviously 5 star ratings are what they are and usually indicate what 'experts' believe should be players that can contribute immediately to a Division I program. 2 & 3 star players tend to need time in the system & maturity before they should contribute. Doesn't mean they won't be great players, but at least required more maturity. Otherwise, coaching staffs & recruiting services across the country were just flat out wrong (which happens, too - the Klein/Knott examples).
Really believe Rhoads but especially Wally Burnham can identify talent necessary to compete at the Big XII level. Think Coach Douglas really adds to this mix superbly. We should be to defensive backs what Iowa is to tight ends - a college program always deep in this area.
More question marks surround our offense, but I think Rhoads has directed us in the right direction here, too. We really lacked big-play weapons, but it looks as though we have more players capable now than in quite some time. What needs to happen is to continue improving in this department and making sure we are continually adding depth to these types of players - ones who can take it tot he house at any time.
