ESPN Recruit Ratings

Apples to Oranges. KSU had big time JUCO recruits come in and make a big impact. They also have a coach with over 150 wins and a career win % around 65%. Completely different IMO. They also are coming off back to back bowls - after having 6 straight losing seasons. Hardly the model of consistency.

I'm not saying that we'll be able to make a push for top 3 in the Big 12 every season, but we can do it on occasion with the talent level we have.

What we can realistically do at ISU is have regular 6+ win seasons under a consistant coaching staff, have a few 8+ win seasons, build up respect as a team that isn't just a bottom feeder, and start out recruiting teams in the midwest. We will never out recruit Texas teams. Even BU and TT will always get the better recruits just because of location. We can beat out KU, KSU, Minn, NW, UI etc though. It'll just take time. With that small bump in talent we could have an occasional title shot down the line.

Bull. Look at K-State. They recruit on par with us but ended up number 2 in the Big 12 last year. We can win in the Big 12 with our quality of recruits, we just need greater consistency in our game. We need to limit our turnovers and penalties and we will compete week in and week out.
Correct

K-State whether or not they are JUCOs play smart. The games I saw them play last year, they didn't commit many turnovers.

The remaining guys have yet to be rated and this is before their senior seasons begin. I hope a lot of the "oh ***** no stars" crew reads this thread and takes a few deep ones. I was pleasantly surprised by the Espn ratings.

Where did CPR find a gas station? And how did he fill up, the price of a gallon is getting higher and higher.

Its the chicken or egg debate. You don't put together 8 and 9 win seasons with marginal talent. But you can't get great talent without winning 8 to 9 games (unless your a blue blood). We should be content with 6 wins and bowl trips after the end of the mccarney and entire chizik tenure but idk, I want more.

This is wrong, and I honestly think we win eight this year.

Since when have ESPN's ratings ever mattered in the first place? From what I've been able to see, they're even more incompetent than Scout's.

I think we win 6 games, but what difference does it make? Look at the teams winning 8+ games per year - they aren't consistently doing it with bottom of the conference talent. The upgrade in recruiting over the last couple years should keep us out of the 2 and 3 win type seasons. To think it has somehow put us at a level where we should be winning 7, 8 or even 9 is foolish IMO. A 9 game conference schedule in the Big 12 only makes it that much more unrealistic.

Can a team with middle of the ground to bottom big 12 talent jump up and win 8 or 9 games - absolutely. Crazier things have happened. Is it likely and would I put money on it? No...not at all.

We just need to prove it on the field that we are capable of winning 8+ games a year. I am not going into games thinking we are going to win or lose, just makes the end result better winning or losing. I want to kick *** sooooo bad, but am not getting into a lot of expectations winning or losing. We play smarter and take of business on the field we will be okay because we do have talent on this team.

They don't matter, I just had been seeing people complaining and worrying about the star ratings so I thought I'd assuage their minds by letting them know that the coaches DO in fact know wtf they're doing.

This is where I'm at, even though from what I know espn is not real reputable with fb rankings. I see them as more of a basketball ranking entity.

Meh. Everyone know these players all suck and the only reason ESPN even knows their name is because they signed with a team in the Big12 so they throw 3 stars at em and be done with it.

Now it looks like 10 three stars.

Interesting.

So what you're saying is we've surpassed or matched based on star rating, the number for 3 star commits we have received in the previous 2 seasons and we managed to do it before the season was even close to starting?

Damn, it's like the coaching staff has some sort of secret high octane blend a bunch of people on this message board weren't even aware of.

While Mr. Otter is joking sarcastically, there is some truth to what he posted. The coaching staff's of the programs below the top tier have to prove themselves to the ratings services to a degree. If they are new & unproven, those 'under the radar' recruits from more 'rural' areas will be given a 2 star rating versus a 3 star rating. If the staff has some longevity & a proven track record at recruiting, then i think more of these types of recruits receive the 3 star rating over the 2 star rating.
Think 4 star & obviously 5 star ratings are what they are and usually indicate what 'experts' believe should be players that can contribute immediately to a Division I program. 2 & 3 star players tend to need time in the system & maturity before they should contribute. Doesn't mean they won't be great players, but at least required more maturity. Otherwise, coaching staffs & recruiting services across the country were just flat out wrong (which happens, too - the Klein/Knott examples).

Really believe Rhoads but especially Wally Burnham can identify talent necessary to compete at the Big XII level. Think Coach Douglas really adds to this mix superbly. We should be to defensive backs what Iowa is to tight ends - a college program always deep in this area.

More question marks surround our offense, but I think Rhoads has directed us in the right direction here, too. We really lacked big-play weapons, but it looks as though we have more players capable now than in quite some time. What needs to happen is to continue improving in this department and making sure we are continually adding depth to these types of players - ones who can take it tot he house at any time.

ROTFL!!!

The first mistake that you guys are making is equating recruiting rankings with actual talent. Pardon me if I stop there...
