Emerald Coast Classic in 2015

The "emerald" refers to the beautiful ocean...not the foliage. The beaches are fantastic...some of the best in the world. It could be colder than most want at the beach but if you are coming from Iowa it will be significantly warmer. The Destin area is fantastic. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity...especially if you have never visited this area.

Makes more sense after seeing the beach photo someone else put up. I just mentally associate green with the pacific northwest...because of all the evergreens. :)

We've been tossing the idea around...I think we're going to go. We were planning on going to the CBE until we realized the dang thing was on a Monday/Tuesday, and we have to work. :(

Emerald Coast, my ***. I was getting excited about combining a tournament out in Washington with a family Thanksgiving (minus the kidney stone). Since when did Florida have an "Emerald Coast"?

Are you joking? The Emerald Coast in NW Florida is awesome. You will not find sand as nice anywhere in the US. We have a condo in FWB just west of Destin. This is an amazing area. Certainly not hot this time of year, but awesome nonetheless. No traffic this time of year. You can rent a 2BR condo on the beach with direct ocean view this time of year for $400-500 a week. With heated pool, Internet, beach access, etc. way better than any hotel, IMO. FWB will be quieter than Destin. Destin will have more action. This is a huge deal. I'm going for sure. The nice thing is you will be able to sit close.

Goto VRBO and look at Destin or Okaloosa Island (fort walton beach area). You won't be able to book for next year, but you can get idea of how much it will be. I am partial to FWB (quieter). We won't be renting out our condo that week, but we are in The Islander--it's a great condo.

Great field, but I really want to head to Atlantis resort some day and play in that tourney.

Me too, I wish they'd get in on the battle for Atlantis.

This year its:
North Carolina
Georgetown
Florida
UCLA
Wisconsin
Butler
Oklahoma
UAB

Daummm....

I just booked my condo on the beach in Destin for this tournament. Going to spend the whole week with the wife down there just relaxing on the beach. Hope to see some fellow Fanatics down there!!

Just got back from Fort Walton Beach. Temps were in upper 60's most of the week. Beach is white sand, with dunes just like Iowa snowdrifts. Very Midwestern and Mid-South. Met former ISU employees on a morning walk. Reasonably priced - 3 bedroom condo overlooking the gulf was $1600 for 4 weeks. Don't know the weekly rate. Destin is clearly for the younger crowd and bar scene.

Flew into VPS (Valparaiso) airport from Rochester, MN for $300 r/t. VPS is part of Elgin Air Force Base and probably only 5 miles from Niceville. It is more like 15 miles to the beach at Fort Walton Beach and 20 miles to Destin.

Seriously considering buying here for future retirement.

Has anyone booked hotels reservations for this tournament? Where are people staying? Looking at VRBO now to lock something in. Have been to destin multiple times only living two hours away.

My dad lives two hours from there as well. Was thinking we'd be staying at the military base since he's retired military but sounds like he's booking a room at the Wyndham. No clue on details, I just plan on booking a flight and showing up.

I am trying to convince my wife to head down there for Thanksgiving. I am thinking about flying into New Orleans and drive down (four hours) to Destin is our plan.

I would like to know where team is staying so we can stay relatively closer to them.

I'm going. Meeting dad in Mississippi ( he lives there and cheaper flight) than driving over. Last time we talked, he has a room or two booked at Wyndham resorts. Not sure if it's in destin or niceville, more just along for the ride.

Just curious, where is the airport that's best to fly in to? Either way, its going to be renting a car and driving, right?
