Does HCMC need a OC to call plays?

Ben Bruns mocked all of us who are concerned about not having an OC in his half-time radio interview. He asked Campbell something like "Play-calling was not too bad for not having an OC, right?"

I really like Ben, guy knows his FB, but the offense clicked because they put in a QB that had great arm, can run, and really made great ball fakes. Suddenly OSU had to defend against all of the things that ISU has faced the last 3 weeks. Got guys guessing, thinking, slowing down a little, added a guy to the box to stop the QB run.

We've been up and down all season. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State we're good games. Iowa and TCU we're plain bad. Bad games don't erase good games and vise versa. Can't do anything about them now but move on.

I think we'll improve as a unit but still look ugly at times with a tFr QB. Team needs to rally around Brock Purdy and elevate their own level of play

Bumping for CyTwins for an update on who is really calling the plays.

Yeah CMC had his hands in the play calling last year just like he had this year. Gasser and Manning had their hands in it last year and it's Gasser and somebody this year, I believe Gordon

OK. Thanks for the clarification. "Called the plays" earlier in the year vs. "Hands in the play calling" now.

Gasser and Gordon have been calling plays with input from Campbell.

I hope it was one of those two that dialed up that Montgomery pass late in the game. That was a great design and call. The problem is it needed to be used earlier and then you needed to build off that action. That happens a lot with these guys. They have this great play that's hard to defend that will make a defense do a bunch of things that they don't want to do but it's never used as leverage later.

There are many legitimate and real benefits of having a dedicated OC beyond simply play calling, thus why 99% of teams have one. While I love CMC and what he has/is/will do for us, we need a true OC to continue to take the next step, no question in my mind.

No doubt Campbell is a great HC and will probably set records at ISU but it's a tall task to call plays from the sideline and do all the other tasks a HC has to handle.

Unless Iowa has the best defense in the NCAA there are significant problems with the offense. Perhaps Campbell should provide input to the OC while the OC actually calls the plays.

Does Chuck Norris need bodyguards?

So which is it...Did Campbell call the plays last year or was it Manning/Gasser with input from Campbell?

Campbell, Manning, Gasser and Gordon call the plays.

My point was Campbell's hands in the play calling were the same last year with Manning as the OC as they were this year with no OC

This is spot on. OC is more than just calling plays. Formations, motions in those formations, just creativity for pre-snap. We do all of those things, but they tend to wear out in the season and that's when teams get predictable. Having someone fully dedicated to do that makes a difference, and also makes us much harder to prepare for.

This cannot be repeated enough times. We need an OC.

I'm on the train as far as we need a dedicated O.C.. It's a very huge job.
