Discipline and focus

Let's back up the blame train a little here. You brought up Chizik. Your intention was to try and show us that Chizik was in some way better than Rhoads. That's what pisses me off. No one else brought up Chizik before you so don't act like everyone else is fixated on him. That's not even to mention you are wrong on the CHizik front. He had players doing the same things. Hell, we couldn't even get a play off.
You have no ******* idea what my intentions are. And you continue with the GC rants. Who has the problem here??

Please show me any rant I have gone on about GC's time here. I bet you can't find one. Any rant was directed at you bringing him up once a month for no reason. It's getting old.

Our offensive starts each game (is the 3rd season time enough to jerk a knee?):

So far this year: Zero TDs scored on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd series. In fact, no TDs in the 1st quarter.

2010: Zero points (of any kind) scored on our 1st or 2nd series of the ENTIRE season. 4 TDs scored in the first quarter the ENTIRE season: 1 NIU, 2 Utah and 1 TX. The 2 Utah could be credited to the D for forcing very short fields with nice turnovers, our 4 other 1st Qrt Utah series ended in punts. We had 1 1st Qrt field goal, UNI.

2009: Only scored TDs on our 1st series vs NDSU and KU (missed extra pt.) plus 1st Qrt = 17 1st Qrt points vs Kent St, 3 Army, 3 Nebraska, 7 CU, 7 Mizzou....none on the 1st or 2nd series and none in any other game.

So with our current coaches after 29 games we have scored 1) 3 times on our first series 2 TDs and one FG 2) 3 field goals in the 1st Qrt, 2 after D forced Turnovers where our O stalled 3) 4 1st Qrt TDs vs BCS teams. Nothing to see here????

(Note - tried to do this right but, if you find an error, please let me know).

We have a serious problem with turnovers and penalties that needs to be addressed. Especially early in games. Coaches need to find a way to address this. We have good talent and should be 4 and 0. We should have won at least 2 of the first 3 games running away and Texas was a winnable game that we ****** down our leg.

Those are interesting stats, and they do point out an alarming trend. However, I'm not sure if it shows lack of focus and discipline, or poor game-planning. Hard to say.

It would appear, based on those stats, that our coaches do a pretty dang good job of making adjustments throughout the game, and they should be commended for that.

What would be even more interesting would be a side-by-side comparison of those stats with national averages. In other words, what is the percentage of first drive scores throughout all BCS programs. I don't know if those stats are available anywhere, but it would certainly be interesting to see.

I don't think its about just the first drive, but early in games. This is spread team that claims to want to play uptempo but our scoring history reads more like a pro style team that grinds at you as the game wears on. The Iowa game this year is the only time I remember us coming out aggressive and actually having a team on their heels. The Hawk D was winded and had no idea what was coming next. On that drive Jantz didn't see a wide open Lenz that would have been 6 and then fumbled a few plays later. After that we couldn't get anything going for several drives.

Three turnovers would not be so bad if we also took the ball away three times. However, it is not happening this year. Can we just intercept Robert griffin III a few times. We tackle well, but we do not seem able to intercept much.

I could have sworn the OP (me) started this thread to talk about how to improve focus and discipline by suggesting a less emotional more military approach might help. Hoping to discuss that thought. What I have found are a multitude of people still fixated on GC. With incredible anger. Sad really. Can't even talk about methods and style changes that could help our problem without people going off the deep end. It's like a bitter divorcee.

To remind you, you said:
Too much emotion is a bad thing in both our coaches and players. We need some of the military approach in our coaching of this team. There is a reason GC did that "stupid thing" of making the players line up their helmets. Also, I can not believe that LJ was trotting out on the next series after an inexcusable personal foul. Sometimes "family" members need a swift kick in the ***.

Is there any chance there is another coach out there you could point to other than one of the most divisive, craptastic, vile humans that has graced the sidelines of jack trice stadium. With you 'body of work' it is pretty obvious that you are a Jeaniefanatic. you have also acknowledged that you like to tweak folks here. Maybe if you want to be the guy you play yourself to be...you could dial back the "Jeanie In a Bottle" schtick and flip your chizik coin without inflicting it upon the rest of us.

Quite frankly it is as if you are looking to get a **** storm stirred with 50% of your posts. You act really smart in some posts and REALLY STUPID in others. You can't be both at the same time, can you?

I can make this really simple: quit posting about Chizik...and many will probably dial back their angst.

This much hate cannot be healthy.

It's not so much hate as calling a spade a spade.

No one here disagrees that this team is struggling with discipline and focus. No one disagrees that the coaches have to correct it (and I am sure the coaches feel the same way).

Where everyone disagrees is you bringing up Chizik, insinuating that he had a better handle on discipline, and then blaming everyone else for having sour grapes.

You bring up GC in the very first post and then wonder why everyone is fixated with him. They aren't, you are. You drag him into nearly every football thread that you can.

Folks, the only way to deal with this joker is to put him on your ignore list. He obviously loves the attention and will get it any way he can, even if it means posting...well, like he is posting; be the judge for yourself. I have always tried to avoid the ignore list, but my time is really too valuable to waste on the garbage he posts.

Congrats, on getting all of the attention you want; but at what price?

So you don't think we have an on-field focus and discipline problem and that the coaches might want to try some new tactics to help improve on these issues???

I think the op needs to just worry about what food and drink he'll have in 'his suite' and leave the practical football discussion ,and decisions, to those without an agenda.

There will be no coaching staff turnover unless a coach voluntarily leaves. You can take that to the bank.

Below are ISU's offense rankings for the current and past two seasons.

..........2009..2010..2011
yds/game... 73....99....75
pts/game...102....93....82

Supposedly through the "easy" part of the schedule, ISU is #82 at 25.5 PPG. That is the worst in the Big 12. The next closest is KSU at #70 (27.8 PPG). There are 4 Big 12 teams in the top 11.

The Big 12 is a high-scoring league, and unless scoring improves dramatically by the end of the year (and it probably has to if ISU has any hope of making a bowl game), I don't see how there won't be some coaching changes on offense. It's hard to fathom that a team could wallow at the bottom of FBS in offense for three seasons without making changes.

Knowing someone very well that was on the team, I do know for a fact Gene did not have the respect of his players nor focused on discipline.

My only agenda is we have a focus and disipline problem, especially early in games and it needs to be addressed. My concern is the kids come out too emotional and are translating that emotion into errors. Look at these stats (I apologize to those that saw this elsewhere) and tell me there is no issue with our offense:

I'll close by admitting that I find it extremely hilarious how certain people go absolutely POSTAL whenever or however a certain former coach is mentioned. It always makes me think of the "Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition" sketch by MONTY PYTHON. One of the funniest things every written and the reaction is identical. Those guys understood human nature so well. BUT is was never my intent in this thread to trigger that reaction. I have a very serious concern.

Wow, I don't think anyone has a problem with you stating we have discipline issues that need some correcting. We have a problem with you bringing Chizik up all the time. Simple as that!

Wow, I didn't realize that our early game struggles were this bad prior to this season. Interested stats there.

I said it before the season and I haven't seen anything to change my mind, but I do not have much faith in Tom Herman. Our offensive output overall has been disappointing for his entire tenure here. And these early game disasters seem to be primarily an offense issue. Our defense has been able to make some stops to keep us in the game long enough for the offense to come around. How many games can anyone recall where the defense came out looking completely lost while the offense was able to take up the load and keep us in the game?

I think you get my drift.
