Discipline and focus

I'm not sure how to coach a football team but a whole lot more accountability (bench sitting) for all these mistakes might be helpful. Clear accountability works in other areas of life to improve focus and discipline. Players need to respect their coach not be their best friend.

What??? I damn well believe they respect the hell out of Rhoads! They would run through a wall for him. That is respect, you dont need to be a military like leader to garner respect. I would just sit back and let CPR make these calls, you are nit picking everything now.

But when does it stop? Its been a common occurrence the first 4 games, they had a bye week to work on the issues. Im not going over the edge like rebeccacy but it worries me a lot. The schedule is not getting easier and the fine line between success and failure is getting smaller with the level of competition and the number of injuries.

What motivation did they have after the first 3 games for it to sink in? "Well, ****, we won right?"

I think the loss is the possible motivation to get it to stop because it kicked them in the ***.

I'm certainly worried about it but I'm hopeful that the coaching staff has been harping on them about it before the loss and can now point at the tape and say "see that **** stops now".

Hope so, but the offensive penalties started last season with KO and others, and now its just a snowball effect that just keeps building, hope it can be corrected soon, but it wont be over the course of 1 week.

ISU turnover margin ranking
2009: 36th (+.31 per game)
2010: 30th (+.50 per game)
2011: 118th (-2.0 per game)

ISU penalties per game ranking
2009: 35th (5.46 per game)
2010: 58th (5.92 per game)
2011: 119th (9.50 per game)

ISU penalty yards per game ranking
2009: 48th (49.85 per game)
2010: 60th (51.33 per game)
2011: 119th (86.50 per game)

Seems to me these problems are specific to just this year and are not systemic to the Paul Rhoads program.

Can we expect the coaches to flip some magic switch and suddenly get the focus and discipline we need to stop the nearly country leading turn-over and penalty problems? I hope so but suspect it will be a process that takes time. The bye week sure didn't help.

Thats my cause for concern. Issues like this should be correctable over a bye, but now its starting to get into the players heads.

Back to the topic AAC, a third of the way thru CPR's 3rd year we sit at #119th in penalty yards against and #118 in turnovers. We just got smoked by a team that was pretty much even with us in talent. We have already played the crap teams this year. We have big problems.

It's going to take a few years for Rhoads to build a program, especially at a place like ISU. An individual cannot reasonably believe that the process will happen overnight, and I believe that ISU needs to have a passionate coach like a Paul Rhoads. A program such as ISU needs someone to be passionate about leading the Cyclones in order to get other people excited about playing for the team or expanding the fan base to watch this team.

In my lifetime there has been two coaches that fit this description, Dan McCarney and Paul Rhoads. Those coaches have been able to sell ISU to other people and energize the fan base. Gene Chizik may have been able to built a winner but he was not going to sell ISU as a product. He doesn't have the personality to do it, and it was going take him more time to build the program because of it.

Am I missing something? LJ had one personal foul penalty and all of a sudden we are undisciplined and out of control?

Honestly if Shipley and the rest of the team wouldn't have been running their mouths all game it probably wouldn't have happened. LJ got caught but you will never convince me that he was the only one talking out there! :skeptical:

Stop saying we are even with Texas in terms of talent. It isn't close to being true.

They are playing 18 freshman and I sure didn't see a talent gap physically. In the mental aspect of the game we are inferior in talent for sure.

Discipline and focus are coached in little league and pee wee. These guys that have played sports their entire lives have heard this preached and modeled every single day. This nothing new. We should be better than what we're showing on the field at this level. The word that we're missing is character. Character is revealed in times of adversity. We need to improve character and discipline and focus will follow. I think CPR is doing all he can to develop it. The players have to let it soak in. BTW, on the issue of discipline and character.....how are the fans in the stands doing in these areas?

I think we've shown plenty of character when facing adversity. In our three wins, we were down, and playing horrible and still found a way to win.

"Adversity". Diversity is another term and I would say we're pretty diverse.

We were not getting our butts handed to us in those 3 games either. All 3 were still close too because those teams are not that good. Also, special teams and defense gave us a chance in the end. We showed a lot of "heart" and "determination" in those games. Big 12 is an entirely different story. We will see adversity if we continue to play like this. A true test of our character.

We were not getting out butts handed to us against Texas. FOUR times our defense started within the forty yard line and gave up 13 points. We took ourselves out of the game. And it was shown through the final score. That was hardly a butt handing.

OP has a point. Our team has troubles. There's no reason to be upset that somebody mentions it.

Except when he starts bringing up how Chizik's coaching style is somehow is better. And it only managed 5 wins in two years.

Texas talent wise didnt wow me. We easily held our own.

18 or more true freshman played yesterday for them. What if that was us? Would you say that we are very talented? It's amazing that teams rebuild and they will play all of their talent in the process to find the best options. We rebuild and people argue that the young guys are too young or are not ready. We're not all that! Play all of our talent. We recruited and signed them. If feelings get hurt, too F-ing bad.
