"Diante Garrett Could Be Sleeper of Draft"

It's really great for DG and ISU as a whole, but it also demonstrates just how weak this draft is going to be. Let me clarify that I love DG and I wish we had him for another year. But I've never really seen him as an NBA guy.

Why not? I always thought the NBA game suited him better than the college game.

agree. the DG bashing was clearly an internet "vocal minority." i'm a huge fan of DG, he's one of my all time cyclone favorites.

what a great kid - never got in trouble, always played hard, worked on his game, continued to improve, and really flourished under hoiberg. and to deal with all the &%^# he had to deal with in his four years?!?! what a great story.

sounds like he's really doing well in the workouts and continues to get better. i'm really rooting for the kid.
Good lineage.

Family man too.

Wonder if CFH made some calls to help him get tryouts?

I like the way he has many different ways that he can dribble to beat his man. Not everyone has that ability.

I wasn't a hater but I would have bet A LOT of money that he wouldn't get drafted. Since I didn't make that bet I really hope he gets drafted. :)

And where would DG be right now if GMac would have been his head coach this year?

Nothing against GMac, but his system did not fit DG at all. A 1,000 plus page half court playbook made DG think too much and complete froze him. Under Hoiberg he was able to play instinctively. It was a night and day difference.

Add to that, you can't tell me that Hoiberg's "connections" with the NBA hasn't helped DG out some. Hoiberg was telling everyone he knew in the league about DG and what he truly felt he could provide them at the next level. It definately didn't hurt.

If a kid's dream is to play in the NBA, playing for Fred Hoiberg can't hurt your chances, that's for sure.

Congrats to DG though. He deserves it. Great Cyclone on and off the court. He took a lot of garbage from the fans for 3 years and just kept on going about his business. He's one tough skinned kid. Good luck DG!!!

To think that we had a team in 2009-2010 on which two guys might get drafted and we won around 15 games is a joke and 100% on the coach.

Good luck to DG, whoever takes him is going to get a very good player that will show up every day no matter what the situation. He'll be the proverbial "Pros Pro" from day one.

No kidding. Hoiberg did better this past season with about 6 or 7 players total than GMac did with a team that had DG, Gilstrap, Dendy, and Brackins. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

And if DG was back again this coming year, we'd be VERY, VERY good IMO. Point guard might be our only question mark.

DG,Craig, Wesley. Sounds like a great team. How did they do for record, Matilda? You say it was like being in the Twilight Zone?

The good news is that we have Hoiberg working out the PG situation. I don't think it will be a question mark by the time the season begins.

Getting him into the first round would be huge! With Craig going last year and DG this year it would go against any belief that you can't get NBA exposer at ISU. Also helps Fred with the whole 'took him in and got him to the league' recruiting angle.

For him to move up to a fringe first rounder, he must be working extremely hard to realize his dream. I would bet he is working harder than any other PG in the draft this summer. Props to DG, fingers crossed he gets picked. Way to go DG!

If Diante creeps into the first round, that will mean the 2007-08 Cyclone basketball team had three 1st round draft picks on the squad. Quite a reflection on coaching when a team with three future 1st round picks goes 14-18.

There was far more then a vocal minority bashing DG..... there were numerous posters continually bashing him inside and out of game threads.

Freshman DG played NOTHING like a first round draft pick. Zilch. Zero. Nada. It isn't like it was Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin on the floor for that team. Yikes.

Why is it that every time there's a new DG thread 2-3 people always mention how he had plenty of haters or how he was always bashed.

We get it. Find a new angle of the DG story to discuss.

I hope DG gets drafted. It will likely be like the NFL this year how if you aren't drafted you literally have no shot to make a roster with the Vegas summer league cancelled and the possible lockout. It will also likely mean that teams will be more prone to keep their 2nd rounders this year more compared to other years where it's basically a 50/50 proposition. Can't wait for the draft. It's always fun to watch the 2nd round when you're watching for a Cyclone.

There is a bit of revisionist history playing out here. I like DG, but didn't like, during his first three years, how often he would get to the rim and not finish. Additionally, he was not a consistent shooter. While his overall % didn't improve this past year, he also shot alot more (more than 3X the number of 3PA), and we needed him too. He picked up his rebounding, scoring, assists and steals. He was much more consistent across his game this year. Thus, don't just bark at those who questioned his performance his first three years then ask where they are now. What people saw his senior year was really beyond what we expected the other years, but did deliver on the promise we could all see.

I doubt anyone can say they really believed DG could get drafted prior to this year, although most of us saw potential (if he could only finish as you mentioned).

But that's not really what I'm referring to when I call out the haters. I'm talking about the people who blamed every close loss this year on DG and constantly reminded those of us defending him that he was "not good enough", "not a winner", etc.

He had a phenomenal senior season and was the #1 reason we managed to net a .500 record. If he'd pulled an extra rabbit or two out of his hat, maybe we finish 18-14... but that's not something to dwell on (unless you're a hater).

There were the consistent DG haters, and then the bipolar "Cyclones" who loved him when he played well and hated him when he didn't. The bipolar ones are the ones that drive me nuts.

DG, his Freshman year, was the ONLY guy who drove the lane to the basket. Been a fan ever since.

NBA, Yay Ahhhhh
