"Diante Garrett Could Be Sleeper of Draft"

I never understood the DG hate. But to be fair, it was only a few jabbering idiots who railed on him.

Again, it was the people that were trying to do their best to defend chewey.

I went back and read some of the old posts during the end that ******* disaster, and EVERYBODY that was defending chewey all talked about how bad the guard play was. It was a built in excuse for being ****** for all of those people that are either blindly support because they are better fans than the rest of us, or supported the coach more than the program.

It is AMAZING that he went from being sooooo bad, and a big reason why poor shreck couldn't win games, to a potential first round draft pick under Fred. I would HOPE that all of those same people that used to scapegoat him to defend that pos chewey would come on here and apologize for being so ridiculously pathetic.

Its pretty pathetic of you to call out McDermott in a way like that. I don't care what anyone says but McDermott tried at a higher level and was not able to compete. Completely inappropriate to call out a coach who represented Iowa State. The past is the past...I hope Creighton does well in the future because McDermott was a genuine guy. Don't get me wrong I am much happier we have Freddy at the helm, but to call McDermott a pos is just showing how much you base things off of sports themselves. Anyway...back on topic. Garrett seems like he has so much potential and I can see him being a huge steal for anyone that gets him. His shooting can improve so much, he can get stronger and finish better. I really do see him as a Rondo type point that will not be as athletic.

Ah...So you are a hybrid of the two types of fan. Nice to see that there are still those around.

Let me ask you, how well do you know ol' chewey? Since you say that he is a genuine guy, I wonder how close you are with him...I wonder how genuine a guy would have to be to step all over his best friend to take his best recruit to save his own worthless hide??? I know a LOT of genuine people, and they wouldn't think that to be proper...But since you are obviously close to the "man" I would welcome all of your input to tell us what a great guy chewey is.

As far as DG, he was a punching bag for the mac people, and in one year he became and all conference guard, and possible draft pick. I am glad that he had the year of freedom. I was always afraid for the guy that he would end up as villified as Curtis Stinson was. Neither one deserved it, but DG especially because what happened to him was hardly his own fault.

Getting him into the first round would be huge! With Craig going last year and DG this year it would go against any belief that you can't get NBA exposer at ISU. Also helps Fred with the whole 'took him in and got him to the league' recruiting angle.

I've never understood why people make this argument and IMO anyone who tries to make it clearly doesn't know jack ***** about basketball. It's ridiculous; if you can play the NBA will find you, it's that simple. Scottie Pippen played his college ball at freakin' the University of Central Arkansas for cryin' out loud. J.J. Barea played at Northeastern (can anyone name what conference Northeastern plays in without looking it up?). Not to go overboard but the thought that you can't get NBA exposure playing at Iowa State is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this board, and that's saying a lot (not picking on the poster I'm replying to, as I don't think he's writing that).

Back to the topic at hand...it would be great to see DG drafted. Seeing players you've followed in college for 3-4 years does get me more interested in the NBA regular season. Right now I pretty much watch only the playoffs.

Terrific post. :jimlad:

umm, no. Some of the DG haters were GMAC fans, but there were just as many who hated both. I can name about 10 current posters who were very critical of both, just off the top of my head. there is no correlation.

That recruit was his son. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

I know Mac (very little) but I know multiple people that are close to him pretty well. He's not a message board tough guy from everything I've heard.

McDad in the end broke almost even in wins and was not the solution. He seems to be a much better permanent fit in the MVC. We needed a different type of coach for the Big 12 and we have him. DG always had skills but his previous coach apparently failed to have his back enough to build his confidence. Everyone on the court looked like they were afraid to make mistakes. Under Fred, it is free and easy and people can just go out and play bball. Even the the Waynester teams looked better than the beat the McDad buzzer stagnation teams. DG has always had talent; it just took a good coach like CFH and Lutz to bring it out. This was a good JP lesson when looking for future coaches IMO.

This would be great for garrett.... and Hoiberg getting a lot out of him in one year in a better system. Should help recruiting... no doubt.

Let the HATE out Mike! Let it out! I didn't like Gmac for the reasons that he put our program in a bad situation, but my god, let the past rest. He's gone, we're in a better position now with Freddy. Your penned up rage against Gmac is beyond embarrassing. He is a class act that was over his head and wasn't successful. Let it be. Maybe you should go put your penned up rage for the hawkeyes in the in-state rivals board. Take a step back from the ledge internet tough guy.

Seriously? A class act?

I will give you that he played the iowa boy schtick to the hilt, and could give a great interview. But, please, there are many players that ran through here over his four years that would differ with your opinion.

I have lots of friends and family that are associated with UNI. People that have known him since he played there. Their opinion of one Greg McDermott has changed considerably over the past two years. They weren't even upset he left for Iowa State, nor Creighton. The thing that is the saddest, and what has changed many an opinion in CF, is that he did step on his best friend, to save his own hide. That does not scream "class act" to me.

I seem to remember reading that you were one of his big defenders....Did you kill DG like many of the rest of the friends and family did?

Nope, you can go back to every post about DG I've made, and its been defending him. So you are wrong for saying that all the Gmac apologists hate DG.

DG is a good reminder that sometimes the "system" really does matter. DG worked very hard to improve his game, and that, combined with hoiberg's more open offense, worked wonders for DG.

People are going to start saying the same thing about Chris Allen when he's averaging 20ppg for us this year....

I'm pretty far from GMac defender, but I won't kill the guy for bringing his son with him to Creighton. The younger McDermott may or may not be a Big 12 player, but bringing him to ISU would have only ended badly...especially if GMac was on the way out. Doug is a perfect fit in the MVC and you can't blame Greg for wanting to coach his son rather than coach against him.

As for DG, let's not proclaim him an NBA player just yet. Most times, when you see guys getting projected for mid-2nd round, they don't get drafted due to the host of foreign players that no one knows about getting picked. That's just how it goes. I think that FH did a great job with DG and helped his stock more than GMac ever could have, but he's still likely to spend some time in the D-League before really getting his shot.

agree. the DG bashing was clearly an internet "vocal minority." i'm a huge fan of DG, he's one of my all time cyclone favorites.

This board was full of man-love for Bryan Petersen back then, and didn't understand that McD had Garrett doing all of the work on the court. IIRC, most of my first 50 posts tried to explain that Petersen was the problem with the backcourt, not DG, and you can guess how that went...

I don't remember that in the slightest, I remember Bryan Petersen being a much maligned player and most calling for DG to start over him.
