Dave Barrent

Amazing!!! We have went 3 whole pages of talking about the hawks and not one player has been charged with a crime since the thread started.

This has to be a record!

I will give Iowa props for their line play when Bulaga and Doerring were healthy and in at the same time last year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the Illinois game that they were dominating?

In Iowa's defense, you can't call a kid like Doerring a bust when he missed almost his entire redshirt year with an illness and his redshirt freshman year with an injury.

All that said, with the talent Iowa has on its o-line and the reputation it has for developing NFL linemen, if they don't produce this year something's wrong.

Those two absolutely got "owned" by Western Michigan at the end of the season in Kinnick. I think I went to 3 of their games last year and was never impressed with their line at all....

They made Indiana's d line look the steal curtain in comparison.... Seriously what games did they dominate???

no in one on ones he was totally dominated by a 315lb dt and in scrimmage he couldn't get his hands on a 205 lb sophmore de (then again no one else at that camp could either)

6'8" 290 does not equal 6'0" 205 so it's not just guys his size he can't stop the little quick guys either

Neither Bulaga or Doering played against Indiana.

Western Michigan ends were beating Seth Olson and Calloway off the edge. The pressure wasnt coming up the middle, where Bulaga and Doering were at guard.

I'm going with BigM here and I'' accept that Barrent was the MVP of an elite camp. It's not hard to believe that as a high school player Barrent can be a little inconsistent as well as he might have been a little more motivated to show off at an elite camp than at a camp where he is not going to attend.

Thanks for the insight BigM and good luck in the future.

Yeah...I'm sure that had nothing to do with the fact that for Dan's first 2 seasons he was suffering from a chronic foot problem. The same problem that Detroit's Kevin Jones had. Once he finally got healthy and got into the game last season, he and Bulaga dominated.

They did? You wanna remind me how Iowa finished their season last year? Didn't seem too dominating to me...

This gets filed under the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" category. If Iowa couldn't stop the pressure coming off of the edge, why the hell would WMU go to something else, like rushing up the middle?

Guess I didn't pay attention much for the Indiana game... That could explain that one....

But they did play against Western Michigan and alot of pressure came right up the middle... There were times the tackles got beat, but alot did come up the middle.

Also explain how Iowa couldn't run up the middle if they did such a great job???

Young ran for 100 yards on 17 carries. It wasnt the middle of the line, it was Olson and Calloway(who I think is horrendous) getting beat like rented mules all day by WMU ends.

Calloway IS horrendous. He was beat like a rented mule for the entire season, not just the WMU game.

The words "Iowa offensive line" and "dominating" should not be used in the same sentence. Iowa had the worst offensive line in the Big Ten and one of the worst in the nation. They were dead last in their conference in virtually every offensive category -- first downs, 3rd down conversions, total yardage, and total points. The only thing they excelled at was allowing sacks -- #1 in the nation. Any Iowa fans who boasts about their offensive line is completely separated from reality.

Funny how so many jumped into this thread just as an opportunity to flog the Hawkeyes.

The facts of the original poster are this--that Barrent looked skinny and narrow shouldered, not to mention a bit slow footed. he also didn't play well, having problems with a 315lb defensive tackle and a 205 lb sophomore defensive end--that nobody else could handle either.

Frankly, I'd like to know more about the soph defensive end.

As noted by one rational observer, high school kids can be inconsistent. And whatever player Barrent is now, it might well mean little to the player he is his fourth year in college, whether that is Iowa, or somewhere else. Did we offer him? I believe the answer is yes.

As far as Iowa, they were riddled with injuries all year long. Not only Dace Richardson, but Vandervelde, Bulaga (who was still out in the spring), I believe perhaps Eubanks and others as well. It's hard to call someone's talent worthless when they've been kept from developing any kind of continuity--ignoring that kind of fact tends to come back and haunt you.

I'm not clear on the details. Did we have an EIU commit attend ISU's camp? Is there any benefit for ISU? Why improve skills that will be used against us?
That would be like USA training China to compete in science and technology.

...what in the world makes you think this isn't happening?

he was probably invited to sway him by the coaching staff, most likely for free, but if you also read the original post he talks about the "valley" team in which most likely points to him attending the camp as a team .... just how ive seen it work when i attended in the past ...

Wow ozzie, calm down! This kid got an up close look at him and came away unimpressed.

I have been told the same thing for the past 6 months. I talked to Jake Mcdonough about Barrent and he said that he is weak. He has the size to be a big time player later on down the road but as of right now he has John Tjaden from Mason City written all over him. All size. That is just my opinion though

Let's see --

On one hand the kid is a multi-year starter for the best HS football team in the state, he's got 4* and 3* ratings by the recruiting services, he's been MVP of an elite football camp, and he has scholarship offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, & Northwestern.

On the other hand, one or two anonymous internet posters who have no football playing or coaching experience and whose football knowledge comes mostly from watching it on tv say he's weak and overrated. Lots of credibility there.

hey i play football it was a TEAM camp so if valley was going to be there i'm guessing their starting o-line would be to and for those wanting to know about the d-end pm me

Valley was invited way before Barrent verbally committed to Iowa. There is plenty of talent on Valley to grab from year to year.
