I have seen many Valley games and David is probably Valley's third best overall blocker on the line, behind bofelli and wood, very uncoordinated guy with slow feet. The only reason he is rated so high is his potential to fill out his body. He is a legit 6'7 290 but sure doesnt use his size to his advantage.

I have a hard time believing he is as bad as you're telling us he is. From his videos, he looks like a decent player. That being said, I think I would take Bofelli over Barent. I've seen the kid up close and he is a bricks*** house. Much more athletic also. Hopefully we can pry him away from his love of baseball.
And recruiting analysts have never been wrong about evaluating high school lineman. See Blake Larson, how'd that work out?
bootcy, you just beat me to the punch. I was going to remind these guys that rivals or Scout had Blake Larson rated as one of the top 3 tackles in America a few years back. I had a couple friends from Atlantic tell me that he was not very good. I posted that to a couple Hawks who were bragging about him and they said I was an idiot that these analysts could not be wrong. Look how that turned out. I guess I would personally trust a kid who actually played against a guy than an analyst who in most cases has only seen a few minutes of tape on a guy. Guys always look all-world in their highlight tape.
Maybe the problem here is Iowa. Because analysts also got Dan Doering wrong. Doering was a 5 star OT ranked as the #4 OT in 2005 and #27 overall and he is yet to start and was overtaken by a 3 star from the 2006 class. Let Iowa get the high ranked OL, they just get wasted there.
Yeah...I'm sure that had nothing to do with the fact that for Dan's first 2 seasons he was suffering from a chronic foot problem. The same problem that Detroit's Kevin Jones had. Once he finally got healthy and got into the game last season, he and Bulaga dominated.
I guess the problem I have with these types of threads is we only hear the bad. Of course, we dont hear the part where the highly rated prospect absolutely pounded and dominated the kid across from him, that isnt newsworthy I guess. We just hear about the few times he got beat and then run to a message board with that info. The kid is a highly rated prospect, hes going to be under a microscope. Its football. Any player can get beat on a given play.
I don't know that I'd ever label someone a bust because they were injured. It doesn't matter how good you are if you aren't healthy enough to get on the field. If we're going by your standards though, we'll find out this season, as he is a junior.
OK, what about Felder then? Or Larson? I'd even say that Mike Jones was overated for what he did in college. It seems like every year iowa signs some highly rated OL who ends up being a bust while they turn a two star into all conference material.
Bottom line is that HS OLs are rated on potential. And potential can be reached by some, but some never reach it. Look at Fiacco that signed with ISU. He had the most impressive OL film I'd ever seen, yet isn't even starting for UNI now. Most OLs dominate in HS on their size alone, but struggle when they come up against someone with similar size or great athleticism (like the player from Roosevelt). That doesn't mean that Barrent isn't going to be good, just that he has to grow into his body and get used to playing against better competition. Going to iowa, though, I'd bet more on bust and some nobody two star getting drafted instead.
BTW, anyone who chooses iowa for their engineering program over ISU and Illinois either is not very smart, or not serious about engineering.
"he and Bulaga dominated", are you sure you were watching the same offensive line as I was, becuase I saw an offensive line that was GETTING dominated, not doing the dominating. They were so dominating that I thought for a moment that it was a mirror image of Robert Gallery and Eric Steinbach playing side by side once again. HAHA

I will give Iowa props for their line play when Bulaga and Doerring were healthy and in at the same time last year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the Illinois game that they were dominating?
In Iowa's defense, you can't call a kid like Doerring a bust when he missed almost his entire redshirt year with an illness and his redshirt freshman year with an injury.
All that said, with the talent Iowa has on its o-line and the reputation it has for developing NFL linemen, if they don't produce this year something's wrong.

While we do have an outstanding engineering program, Iowa isn't really that far behind. This is from 2006 and ISU comes in 41st while Iowa is 52nd. So not a whole lot of difference to me. Has it come to this where we now bash high school kids? He will more than likely red-shirt his first year so that gives him two more years to develop and who knows what he will be like then as compared to now.
