I think that's a good thing.

For those of us who don't have this info but want to speculate:

Mike Krzyzewski, Duke — $9.7 million
Rick Pitino, Louisville — $5.8 million
John Calipari, Kentucky — $5.5 million
Bill Self, Kansas — $5.0 million
Tom Izzo, Michigan State — $3.9 million
Steve Alford, UCLA — $3.5 million
Thad Matta, Ohio State — $3.3 million
Josh Pastner, Memphis — $2.7 million
Sean Miller, Arizona — $2.6 million
John Beilein, Michigan — $2.5 million
Jay Wright, Villanova — $2.5 million
Travis Ford, Oklahoma State — $2.5 million
Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh — $2.4 million
Bo Ryan, Wisconsin — $2.4 million
Tony Bennett, Virginia — $2.3 million
Lon Kruger, Oklahoma — $2.2 million
Scott Drew, Baylor — $2.1 million
Mark Gottfried, North Carolina State — $2.0 million

From a Business Insider story from last December - source

They key to potentially finding a surprise candidate is finding someone who is feeling a bit of heat from his current school. From this list, I see Jamie Dixon, Mark Gottfried, and Josh Patsner potentially feeling like they could make a move. I'd like to believe we could try to get a Lon Kruger because it seems like he likes to move, but I doubt he moves within conference. Texas wanted Sean Miller, so he's not going anywhere.

I still think that a guy like Mike Brey would listen. And I think the brief discussion about Mark Few yesterday was interesting. Like I said, a lot of those guys eventually make a move.

If $5 million is a true number then a splash could certainly be made. Not holding my breath and still think we'll end up with a no HC experience salesman, but now there is hope

John Beilein should come to Iowa State. His recruiting has struggled as of late at Michigan. He took the Wolverines to the National Title Game, just like Johnny Orr, and the rest was Cyclone history.

Bring in Sean Miller for 4 mil. He's kinda a ****** and probably cheats, but he gets studs.

If you're just saying a guy like Kruger, OK, but I keep seeing his name and I guess I don't understand it. The guy is 62. I would be pretty shocked if he didn't retire at Oklahoma. Can't see him wanting to make a move at this stage in his career.

I don't think a coach making under $2 million a year would be able to command a raise of 50% or more.

If that is the case, I fully expect JP to go the total opposite direction. But if you can get one of the guys on the list, of course you should be willing to pony up.

You'll also notice that none of the guys I have bolded would be downgrading their job position. At WORST it's a lateral move program wise and an upgrade monetarily.

The same thing goes for roster talent and conference.

The roster we have will help sooth any concerns they have about money IMO.
I'd like to think you are right, but ISU is not going to get an established P5 to move in June for only 500k, probably not even $1 million. And yeah, maybe JP wouldn't want to bump a known name from a non-P5 or non-BB school P5 pay from less than $2 million up to $3 million or more, but Leath and donors may...hence the chatter of there being different opinions. As far as lateral moves, coaches tend to think in terms of programs, not teams.

-There are several guys at non P5 schools that are "big names" that would only come to ISU in June for $3-$4 million, but neither side is totally sold on such the union. (ISU for value, candidate waiting for an easier gig).
-Maybe you get a Frank Martin type to move from their P5, but the list is very small imo and far less likely.

I've accepted TJ as the next guy, so he has my vote. Unless there's a huge stud that they've managed to keep under wraps in the interview process I hope TJ gets the nod. Significantly cheaper and we can pay for a veteran coaching staff to come in and really hit it hard on recruiting for the next few years.

I think Hines maybe hearing some rumors on the mystery candidates front but not enough to name names from his last tweet.

@TravisHines21: Even with Levelle Moton today, still would not be at all surprising to me if there are more candidates for ISU than have been leaked.

Can't speak for others, but I mentioned him in the sense it would be great to find our version of Kruger. Great coach that was undervalued at previous spot and looking for his final gig.

I'm sure Hines has the same info as Jeremy, but just can't release any names at this point for the same reason.

To be frank I really think this wait is good. Pollard is looking close at the guys. I'm glad he is just not giving the job to TJ, he is doing his homework. And besides what's the rush? We are the only open job in College Basketball. I like hearing the rumors about us looking at Greg Freaking Marshall. Our goal is to win the National Championship this year, so relax.

If these surprise candidates were truly college guys demanding money and from this list, my money would probably be on Josh Pastner, Jamie Dixon, and Mark Gottfried. Outside shot would be Jay Wright.

I've been hoping for Frank Martin for a while now. Hopefully he's one of the surprise guys.

Considering the full range in the NCAA of salaries, excluding Coach K and Calipari, is like $3.9 million, I think $1 million per year is a whole hell of a lot.

Especially since I'd expect the fully guaranteed contract to be for 5 years or so.

And the P5 spread is even less, probably closer to $3 million.

Take away Izzo, Self, and Pitino and that spread closes down another whole million dollars.
