A couple quick nuggets...

1 - To those freaking out about Nick Nurse, I can't stress enough that barring some last minute change of heart, he will not be our next head coach. If he is named the coach, you have to worry that A) that means we really didn't like any of about 6 guys in front of him and B) he will only be the coach for 1 or 2 years before getting an NBA HC position.

2 - It's hard to say at the moment if either of the two surprise candidates are still possibilities as most sources are as silent as I am about them out of fear of tanking any chance we do have. I can't stress enough that no news is good news on that front.

3 - If I had to put odds on the current state of affairs (a lot more should be report-able tonight or tomorrow morning), I'd still say TJ is the front-runner, but it's a much closer race than many would expect.

THANK YOU!

Jeremy, once the new coach is announced, will you tell us about who the surprise candidates were (assuming they're not hired)?

This board would lose their mind if either of the surprise candidates were hired. In a good way.

Are these surprise candidates high-major guys or guys like Moton? Or guys somewhere in between like a Few or a Eustachy?

I've seen lists of assistants by two of the candidates, but out of respect won't post them. That will be available in due time.

In regards to the money scenarios - it's hard to say. I know that ISU can afford up to $5mil without any additional needs, but clearly the desire will be to stay as far below that as possible. I think the important part of Leath staying involved is he will make sure it doesn't come down to just money. A good example is both of the surprise candidates would command 3+, with one being around 4.

$4 million a year?

4 coaches in the entire country (at non private schools) make $4 million a year.

Only 9 make over $3 million.

That means that those two really are huge fish.....

A guy like Moton is cheap.

I wouldn't mind getting a promising mid-major and spending a lot on the staff. So many good options out there, hopefully it just is not too late in the year.

The money cap rumor seemed like a smokescreen to me all along. Pollard is too smart to handcuff our bball program to save money for something like a possible buyout for a struggling football coach. No reason to drag the thriving program down with the struggling one.

Pollard has had a lot of time to think about this possibility- years not just months. If the rumors that we're going after some big fish are true, then I don't buy for a second that we're looking to keep this hire under $3M, regardless of the candidate.

My hope is that Pollard has had so much time to think about it that he has a top target or two that he feels really good about, and he's ready to knock it out of the park with his sales pitch.

Likely a guy making decent money now, and demand a compensating wage to move to ISU. If we could be as lucky as OU when they landed Kruger even JSB could forget about Fred.

For those of us who don't have this info but want to speculate:

Mike Krzyzewski, Duke — $9.7 million
Rick Pitino, Louisville — $5.8 million
John Calipari, Kentucky — $5.5 million
Bill Self, Kansas — $5.0 million
Tom Izzo, Michigan State — $3.9 million
Steve Alford, UCLA — $3.5 million
Thad Matta, Ohio State — $3.3 million
Josh Pastner, Memphis — $2.7 million
Sean Miller, Arizona — $2.6 million
John Beilein, Michigan — $2.5 million
Jay Wright, Villanova — $2.5 million
Travis Ford, Oklahoma State — $2.5 million
Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh — $2.4 million
Bo Ryan, Wisconsin — $2.4 million
Tony Bennett, Virginia — $2.3 million
Lon Kruger, Oklahoma — $2.2 million
Scott Drew, Baylor — $2.1 million
Mark Gottfried, North Carolina State — $2.0 million

From a Business Insider story from last December - source

Who the **** would even interview for us if they need $4million?

Looking at guys just based on salary alone, and I will say that probably all of these are impossible and ridiculous:

Jay Wright
Mick Cronin
Greg Marshall
Mike Anderson
Mark Gottfried
Dana Altman
Larry Krystkowiak
Mark Few
Josh Pastner

The most likely out of those to me would be Anderson and Wright.

Both would be a big step up in conference and better than their returning team.
