First off, congratulations on your recent 'appreciate a mod day'. I would have gotten a card, but I had a nasty case of the trots this morning and I didn't want to risk another incident in hallmark.

I know that my lack of consideration for your special day may make this request hard to fulfill, but please consider it on its merits. Could we change clonedude's avatar to:

Since he's always crying like a little girl? And really, revoke that Superman like logo with ISU in it, the closest he could get is his underoos that he's still wearing.

Again, I hope the fact that I didn't send a card doesn't influence my standing. I try hard to be a good little cyclonefantic. I've never been banned, and I've only had a few posts deleted here and there, generally when I've been in the whiskey...we've all been there, 'eh...so please consider this request thusly.

At the risk of sounding like a Cyclone apologist, this whole deal sounds like much ado about nothing. Several coaches committed some secondary violations, and the school self reported and disciplined accordingly based on what the investigation turned up. That ought to be the end of it.
If the NCAA comes down hard on a school/program that came clean, all it does is encourage other NCAA programs to sweep stuff like this under the rug and hope nobody notices instead of investigating and fixing the problem.

I just read Keith Murphy's take...he kind of dinged CPR with 11 violations vs other coaches 2-4, but I guess the numbers guy in me might see that more on the economy of scale. Less recruits, less potential for error, more recruits, more errors.

Theoretically, if you donate money to the University and you show up at a game and start talking to kids you've had no previous relationships with (kid's friends, cousins, nephews, etc.) it's illegal for you to talk to them. It's considered contact, weather it be by the head coach, assistant or a booster. I sat down and read the handbook they sent me when I joined the Cyclone Club, granted, this was 15 years ago, but none the less, it's amazing what a "representative" of the University counts as. Which is why, these infractions are almost a joke really. You tell me the big money boosters down in Alabama, Louisiana or Texas aren't going to kids' games and putting a few thoughts in their heads?

Now you see exactly what I mean. Do you think anyone in the media, especially in the state of Iowa, is going to report this factually? No.

As I said, all they are reporting is that Iowa State committed major NCAA infractions by making thousands of impermissible phone calls to potential recruits. That is what is being reported everywhere about ISU tonight.

And 99% of the people that hear this aren't going to bother even checking to see how accurate it is. We're just cheaters now in everyone's eyes. That's what I've been trying to say all night on here. It doesn't really matter, in the court of public opinion, what we did or didn't actually do. We committed numerous major NCAA violations. Period.

So if we beat Kansas next year in basketball... just be prepared to hear... "yeah, well that's because you cheat.".

That's all I'm saying here. I don't think what ISU did was bad at all. In fact, it's just some stupid NCAA rules that don't mean jack squat IMO. Problem is, my opinion doesn't matter. It's the opinion that is already all over the internet, social media, and various news outlets that matters. And they are basically calling ISU cheaters because we committed major NCAA violations.

Maybe you should quit worrying about what others think. I used to worry about that and get all worked up and then realized most people don't know the proper facts and just spout nonsense so who really cares what they have to say.

The Register is getting hung up on the word "major" (Bryce Miller's column is particularly embarrassing in this regard) and whining about transparency while the Tribune is reporting it out much more in depth and providing context, telling people in practical terms what this all actually means.

From what I've read so far, the Ames Tribune and Keith Murphy (on his blog) seem to have it about right. This is not nothing, and can't just be casually dismissed. Yet it's really not that serious, and seems likely to be more of a temporary black eye than anything truly damaging.

Does anyone remember a couple of years ago, there were some vague mentions on CF of a radio host in central Iowa claiming that something was going to bring down Iowa State soon? I didn't hear much about it at the time, and the posts died out pretty quickly.

Is this possibly the issue that radio host was talking about?

I agree totally - Travis Hines of the Trib is becoming the go-to source for unbiased and comprehensive coverage. He doesn't get into the hyperbole, but yet doesn't write like an employee of the ISU athletic dept. either.

I don't know about the twitter/facebook. I think it's still a gray area, maybe someone can put some more light on that. But, if you go to a kids football game, because you like the way he plays, and speek to him after the game and say, "Hey, you really should consider Iowa State." It is a violation. At least according to the handbook I had. Honestly, when I read it, I was like "Holy ****, all this applies to me, just because I donate money and am a season ticket holder?"

This report was released because of the Fredom of Information Act. ISU stated a week ago they were doing what the NCAA wanted them to do and not release it until the NCAA said to. What media outlet in the state just had to have this info right now. This report basically does nothing but repeat what was said in the summarys before, except for naming names.
