Clayborn

Iowa could have the best defensive front in all of college football next season. And if Spivey comes back, their defense could be nasty good.

being a hawk fan if I had to pick one of the three to come back he would be the one....our DB's will be fine next year if Spievey leaves but I'd love to have him back. Not really worried about the OL going into next year no matter what happens

If you're expecting Prater or Bernstine to play at the same level as Spievey, you're going to be very disappointed. Spievey has taken away half the field all season, one of Iowa's best CBs ever.

Clayborn returning is huge. If the coaches can somehow talk Spievey and Bulaga into coming back, and Dace getting a 6th year ...let the National Championship talk begin.

I don't think the dropoff from Spievey to JB is as big as the dropoff from Clayborn to w/e the new dline situation would be.

Also a great pass rush (insert Clayborn) will help the secondary.

Was Clayborn's decision in part based on his trial coming up in March? Would NFL teams pass on him if he was possibly going to spend up to a year in jail? He probably will get slapped on the wrist but who knows?

everything starts up front...four guys who can do the work themselves means no blitzing by LB's or DB's very much if at all...perfect scenario for getting Bernstine up to speed and two new LB's into the flow

You're probably one of the people who thought Iowa fans were crazy last year. If everyone comes back next year, they'll be in the conversation before the season starts.

A line of Clayborn, Ballard, Binns and Klug could very well be the best d-line in the country.

Not a surprise....this was expected

BTW...what year did you attend the U of I?

I didn't. I'm a proud graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. I picked UNI over Iowa because while I like the Hawks, UNI has the better accounting school.

Why is that? Iowa was 9-0 and ranked #4 at one point and a serious title contender this year, having one of the top 3 DL's in the country next year means they will be in the discussion at the beginning of the year next year and not by just Iowa fans.

You will be in discussion for a B10 championship and a top ten ranking. Very few, if any, will project Iowa in the Nat'l championship talk.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but that is the reality of the situation.

This. Iowa should definitely contend for a Big 10 title and at-large BCS berth. Hard to think that they'll pull off the undefeated season though. It just seems that they always have something go wrong (like ISU) at the wrong time.

And you know none of these guys went to Iowa. I assume you're trying to rile them up?

I hate to say it, but the Hawks might be able to go undefeated next year. If they do, and noone else is undefeated, they have a good shot to go to the championship.
They will get credit for having a great D and the offense will probably be as good or better than they were earlier this season.

It all comes down to who else is undefeated at the time. If someone stumbles in their conference championship game, Iowa could get bumped up without playing and end up in the championship. That is one positive for the Big10 not playing after Thanksgiving.

I think people are confusing National Title favorites with National Title contenders. Iowa won't be considered by anyone to be a favorite to win the national title but it really doesn't take much to be in the discussion. Even Boise State will be in the discussion.

And I also am unsure of the point he is trying to make about asking people where they went to school. I'm proud to be a UNI alum and don't for a second think that should prevent me from being a fan of Iowa. Being a fan of Iowa does not prevent me from also being a fan of UNI or the other way around. Besides, there are quite a few UNI alums/Cyclone fans on this board as well.

I graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1998 with a BA in accounting.

BTW..... could you tell me the years you played for or worked for your favorite professional teams, you have to have a connection or your not really a fan right?

Yeah, most of us are screwed with Pro teams since there are none in the state. I always find peoples fan connection with Pro teams interesting because of this. Sometimes there is a good story there.

I personally don't subscribe to the notion that you have to be an alum to be a fan. I wish ISU had more casual fans than we do though I appreciate the die-hard fans we have, alum or not.
I would be interested to find out what percentage of Iowa (and ISU) fans are alums though. I think it would be an interesting stat.

It would be interesting, but I would think that it would be almost impossible to measure precisely.
