Casey's logo looked carelessly outdated in the early 80s. 40 years later it looks intentionally classic and you keep that.
I'd have just developed options with and without the "general store" and done the kind of subtle updates the public doesn't notice but designers do. I think "general store" is an asset but there are some uses where short helps.
Even Coca Cola does subtle updates to their classic script the public doesn't recognize as changes.

What I see in the new logo is following the overall trend in logos. And that is following the Apple way of making things simple. Doing away with the brick background and stuff is what other companies are doing and was in a way popularized by Apple.

Should have included a crapper behind the counter in your logo, that would have sealed the deal
I swear to god, I was driving through dysart Iowa on Saturday. Stopped at the Casey’s there to take a leak. Sure enough, crapper was behind the counter in this weird room with a washer and dryer and bunch of empties. I hadn’t been in Casey’s bathroom of that style in YEARS. Made me wish I had to make some mud and leave my mark on that place. Ahhh.... The memories...
Not like it was. Others are beginning to muscle in as the city council finally had enough turnover to adopt a more growth friendly agenda. Others have built pretty much all the stores on the sprawling edges of the city.

I knew that they had owned their own dairy for quite a while, but didn't realize they made all their own containers as well. Quik Trip has a similar distribution system for their pastries and sandwiches. It's amazing how the industry continues to evolve. Kum & Go seems to be moving in the direction of trying to market their hot and cold sandwiches more on the premium end of the spectrum, and now Quik Trip is expanding their kitchens yet again to add more hot sandwich options. Casey's still has the best pizza, but they're on the verge of falling behind on those other items. Their non-pizza offerings are not impressive.
The logo change has nothing to do with people who are familiar with the brand. They probably knew it wouldn't be popular with that crowd, but also know people are not going to change their habits over a logo. This is about having a logo that they can introduce to a new market that doesn't look old and outdated to someone who's not familiar with it.
On my road days I'm usually on the road for at least 12 hrs, fuel me and the vehicle at the same time. KwikStar has some pretty decent salads also.
