I am a whiskey drinker, my suggestion would be to try and find something from Iowa that your friend can't get here. Templeton Rye, Cedar Ridge, those are pretty much available everywhere here. Even if it isn't great, I'd appreciate a bottle of something I can't get locally, more than a good bottle I can just go pick up at Binny's.

BTW, for those that are Rye drinkers, pick up a bottle of Old Forester Rye. It's 100 proof and it's amazing.

Yeah, this is exactly what I'm going for. I don't want to get something he can get where he lives. Needs to be specific to Iowa.

You can get the normal Cedar Ridge Bourbon in Chicago but you can't get any of the special finishes or the wheat whiskey, etc. So that may be something more unique.

What about the CR single malt? Not sure if his buddy is a scotch guy, but that could be unique if not available in Chicago. It's pretty good. I've had the CR maple whiskey and wasn't a fan, but I'm not usually a fan of the flavored stuff, seems to syrupy.

I saw one bottle of the single malt on the sale rack actually at Binny's last week. So maybe you used to be able to but can't anymore?

A month or so ago, you could get a "store pick" Cedar Ridge Single Malt Cask Strength at the Hy-Vee on Merle Hay in Johnston. I thought it was really good. I think it was $50, and you could get $.10 off a gallon of gas. ;)

When they start putting fuel savers on liquor, I'm in trouble.

Cedar Ridge also produces Slipnot No.9, may be worth a try for something uncommon
Tried that at the last Cyclone Liquors tasting show. Told the distributor I thought the bottle/label said "Nog" on the front and wondered if it was a whiskey-spiked egg nog. It's not.

Cat's Eye distillery in Davenport is putting out some interesting stuff. Obtanium seems to get pretty good pub in the Whiskey circles.

I have a bottle of the Light Whiskey from obtainium that I really like. Beware that he's a blender, doesn't distill, which peeved everyone about Templeton. But it pretty much industry standard.

I have a Cat Eye one that is good too, but I'm learning whiskey myself

S & B Distillery in Bancroft has some nice products:

Sir Winston Peach

Sir Winston Peach is so fresh, bright, and deliciously juicy that you’ll be thinking about summer all year long. This sweet, delightful fusion of ripe peach flavors and a hint of vanilla is not only fragrant but savory and smooth.

Anyone have anything from the Lonely Oak Distillery in Earling? I've been tempted as I am from around there, but never get back there anymore.
Yes, they have very good vodka and bourbon....so good that I actually joined their barrel club. The owners are great people and are very passionate about craft distilling.

Some of my personal favorites. Whistle Pig Boss Hog, Elijah Craig, 1792 sweet wheat, Blantons, and Angels Envy (Rye but Fantastic)

I posed this to our overlord (@ChrisMWilliams) but I’m sure he’s far too busy running a business to answer...

I’m visiting a friend in Chicago in a few weeks. He’s a bourbon drinker. I imbibe on occasion but don’t know the first thing about them. What are some good Iowa bourbons that I can give him as a gift? I want to give him something he can’t get where he lives.

TIA

Not exactly what you asked for, but here are some very unique Iowa products available at the DSM Whiskey Club event next week.

Just thought about this today. I personally have not had any of the Foundry spirits yet but I plan to try some soon. https://foundrydistillingcompany.com/valley-junction/ They were talking about the Blonde Fatale Whiskey tonight and the Blonde Fatale may just be my favorite beer so I can't wait for that to be released to try. I like how they are teaming up with local breweries, can't wait to see what they might come up with the Barntown guys as they make some really good beers.

I am a big fan of Cedar Ridge, about as good of a whiskey there is in that price range IMO. I remember back when Templeton Rye 1st came out and it was so hard to get a bottle but now I really don't think it is anything special once you try other products out there.
