I posed this to our overlord (@ChrisMWilliams) but I’m sure he’s far too busy running a business to answer...

I’m visiting a friend in Chicago in a few weeks. He’s a bourbon drinker. I imbibe on occasion but don’t know the first thing about them. What are some good Iowa bourbons that I can give him as a gift? I want to give him something he can’t get where he lives.

TIA

Not a lot of options from the state of Iowa. I would try to find something off the wall that’s not from the state if you’re bringing it to a bourbon guy. I’m sure Cedar Ridge is available in Chicago. I haven’t been terribly impressed with Cody Road or Cedar Ridge.

I guarantee he can't get Green Frog in Chicago.

Not bourbon, but for a while Cyclone Liquor had a single barrel store exclusive Templeton Rye. Not sure if the still have it, though.

I am a little sad at myself for not trying it yet but probably one he can't get in Chicago yet is Iowa Distilling Company Bourbon.

Cedar Ridge is great really but they have been expanding their markets a bit already.

Cedar Ridge also produces Slipnot No.9, may be worth a try for something uncommon

Your Chicago friend may appreciate the Al Capone link to Templeton.

Bourbon is from Kentucky. The best Iowa whiskey is bootleg templeton but unless you know someone you can’t get it. Might as well do CFs finest, Cody Road

Looks like my first sentence is disputed on the internet. Learned something new
