I am a whiskey drinker, my suggestion would be to try and find something from Iowa that your friend can't get here. Templeton Rye, Cedar Ridge, those are pretty much available everywhere here. Even if it isn't great, I'd appreciate a bottle of something I can't get locally, more than a good bottle I can just go pick up at Binny's.
BTW, for those that are Rye drinkers, pick up a bottle of Old Forester Rye. It's 100 proof and it's amazing.

You can get the normal Cedar Ridge Bourbon in Chicago but you can't get any of the special finishes or the wheat whiskey, etc. So that may be something more unique.
Yeah, this is exactly what I'm going for. I don't want to get something he can get where he lives. Needs to be specific to Iowa.
What about the CR single malt? Not sure if his buddy is a scotch guy, but that could be unique if not available in Chicago. It's pretty good. I've had the CR maple whiskey and wasn't a fan, but I'm not usually a fan of the flavored stuff, seems to syrupy.
I saw one bottle of the single malt on the sale rack actually at Binny's last week. So maybe you used to be able to but can't anymore?
A month or so ago, you could get a "store pick" Cedar Ridge Single Malt Cask Strength at the Hy-Vee on Merle Hay in Johnston. I thought it was really good. I think it was $50, and you could get $.10 off a gallon of gas.

When they start putting fuel savers on liquor, I'm in trouble.
If you want something specific to Iowa, find some of these bad boys. Definitely can't find this in the Chicagoland, picked it up last summer when I was home.

Tried that at the last Cyclone Liquors tasting show. Told the distributor I thought the bottle/label said "Nog" on the front and wondered if it was a whiskey-spiked egg nog. It's not.

I have a bottle of the Light Whiskey from obtainium that I really like. Beware that he's a blender, doesn't distill, which peeved everyone about Templeton. But it pretty much industry standard.
I have a Cat Eye one that is good too, but I'm learning whiskey myself

Just thought about this today. I personally have not had any of the Foundry spirits yet but I plan to try some soon. https://foundrydistillingcompany.com/valley-junction/ They were talking about the Blonde Fatale Whiskey tonight and the Blonde Fatale may just be my favorite beer so I can't wait for that to be released to try. I like how they are teaming up with local breweries, can't wait to see what they might come up with the Barntown guys as they make some really good beers.
I am a big fan of Cedar Ridge, about as good of a whiskey there is in that price range IMO. I remember back when Templeton Rye 1st came out and it was so hard to get a bottle but now I really don't think it is anything special once you try other products out there.
